Short Stories: Five Decades | Irwin Shaw
16 posts | 1 read | 10 to read
Irwin Shaws collection of powerful stories that set the standard for post-war American authorsIrwin Shaw was a star of the New Yorkers fiction pages in the 1930s and 40s. His prose helped shape the landscape of post-war fiction, and his work drew from a remarkable life that spanned from American football fields to European battlefields, Broadway to Hollywood, Depression-era saloons to the McCarthy hearings. Among these sixty-three stories are iconic works such as The Eighty-Yard Run, a tale of an American dream crippled on Black Monday, and Main Currents in American Thought, in which a hack radio copywriter is tormented by the glitz of show business. Through the decades, Shaws writing as demonstrated in these pagesmaintains the clear-eyed moral purpose, rich in wit and startling insight, of a tough kid with a philosophers soul. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Irwin Shaw including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the authors estate.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Caroline2 Oh, read it then! I‘m rereading it now and even enjoying it as a reread. 3y
Liatrek It‘s so funny the only reason I started watching GOT was because Sean Bean was in the lead and I knew he couldn‘t die🤦🏾‍♀️ I hadn‘t read the books lol 3y
RamsFan1963 Neil Gaiman is my favorite short story writer. Any of his collections, Smoke & Mirrors, Fragile Things, or Trigger Warning, are highly recommended. 3y
Caroline2 @Liatrek Oh no!!! 🤦‍♀️ 😆 he‘s a great actor. And so lovely, I met him once at a premier. He gave me his autograph and a kiss 😘 😯 ☺️ 3y

Since I got so behind on everything, I decided to send my #shortstoryswap package straight from Amazon. Be on the lookout @BookNAround for 2 separate packages (I have no idea why they do it that way!). I‘m sorry for having to do it like this but I didn‘t want it to be late. I hope you like it!

#bookmail

BookNAround Oh goodie. Now I can play innocent when the boxes from amazon that I ordered myself arrive. If I wait to open any of them, they could potentially all be swap packages, right? 😂 6y
JenlovesJT47 @BookNAround hey, anything is possible!! 😅 6y

Finished book #365 of 2017 and logged it into Goodreads. Since I turned 30 this month, I can identify with a lot of the writers here. I can't wait to see them grow in their journeys as writers - I enjoyed their short stories here.
Sadly this book is from an indie press and isn't logged in Litsy, so I can't formally review it via their app. It was good though!

Short stories delivered to my inbox? Yes, please. http://theseasonofstories.com/
“This year, Season of Stories is featuring hand-picked short stories from acclaimed authors such as…Lee Child, James McBride, Denis Johnson, and Aimee Bender. Each week, you'll get a new short story delivered to your inbox in four installments…just the right amount to read while commuting, waiting in line, or during your lunch break.”

AceOnRoam Just signed up. Is it free ? Lee Child yay, although I don't think he's writing his own books anymore he must have "staff" /shadow writers. 7y
Lola @AceOnRoam It‘s free! I hope the Lee Child piece is his own. After all, it‘s just a short story. Surely he can do that by himself, right? 🙄😛🙃 7y

Three short stories that I read today that aren't in the Litsy database. I get a lot of good ebooks from instafreebie.

andrew61 I read a lot of Irwin shaw at one point after the Rich Man Poor man series- I'm not sure if he is neglected or not but id like to revisit him at some point. 7y
quirkyreader @andrew61 I just has some of Shaw's work come in the other day. If it was the 1970's people would have known who he was, especially because of the mini series. There are so many great writers out there who get lost in the shuffle. And we fans try to keep it going so the writers can be "re-discovered" and come back into print for others to enjoy. 7y
andrew61 Yes I'll be interested to see what others you have discovered. I recall loving The young lions and shaw wrote a great book set around the mcarthy issues - im definitely going to revisit but am frustrated that all the shaw books have long gone to charity! 7y

Pickpick

The 1st tale in SHORT STORIES: 5 DECADES is "The 80-Yard Run," a masterpiece about the tragedy of living an unexamined life. And yet there are works just as good throughout this beast of a book. He lost nothing off his fastball in 50 years! #2015top5

Kensalikof "The Girls in Their Summer Dresses" is also one of his best. 8y
