NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Entertainment Weekly The Boston Globe Kansas City Star A legal thriller thats comparable to classics such as Scott Turows Presumed Innocent . . . Tragic and shocking, Defending Jacob is sure to generate buzz.Associated Press NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERAndy Barber has been an assistant district attorney for two decades. He is respected. Admired in the courtroom. Happy at home with the loves of his life, his wife, Laurie, and teenage son, Jacob. Then Andys quiet suburb is stunned by a shocking crime: a young boy stabbed to death in a leafy park. And an even greater shock: The accused is Andys own sonshy, awkward, mysterious Jacob.Andy believes in Jacobs innocence. Any parent would. But the pressure mounts. Damning evidence. Doubt. A faltering marriage. The neighbors contempt. A murder trial that threatens to obliterate Andys family. It is the ultimate test for any parent: How far would you go to protect your child? It is a test of devotion. A test of how well a parent can know a child. For Andy Barber, a man with an iron will and a dark secret, it is a test of guilt and innocence in the deepest sense. How far would you go?Praise for Defending Jacob Ingenious . . . Nothing is predictable. All bets are off.The New York Times Stunning . . . a novel that comes to you out of the blue and manages to keep you reading feverishly until the whole thing is completed. The Huffington Post Gripping, emotional murder saga . . . The shocking ending will have readers pulling up their bedcovers to ward off the haunting chill.People The hype is justified. . . . Exceptionally serious, suspenseful, engrossing. The Washington Post Even with unexpected twists and turns, the two narratives interlock like the teeth of a zipper, building to a tough and unflinching finale. This novel has major motion picture written all over it.The Boston Globe Yes, this book came out in January. No, we are not done talking about it.Entertainment WeeklyBONUS: This edition contains excerpts from William Landay's Mission Flats and The Strangler and a Defending Jacob discussion guide.

My local library bookclub picked this one this month. I'm typically not one to read courtroom thrillers, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this one.

A 14 yr old boy is accused of a murder, but his parents don't believe it was him and try to figure out who the real killer is.

The book brings up several good discussion topics about a limits as a parent and how quickly one false accusations can tear apart a family.

darncutebookreviewgirl I have this on TBR list. Sounds so good 3mo

A great read with an ending you will never see coming. This book explores the age old question of how far will a parent go if their child is threatened... a book that has been on my TBR for a while and if you are considering reading it, do it!! You won‘t be disappointed!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Overall a really good book. The did he/didn't he keeps you on your toes. It's reminiscent of a Jodi Picoult novel, but still holds its own in the court drama area. It had some slow spots, but the ending totally makes up for that. Happy I pushed through to the end for sure! 3.5 🌟

A faster read than its 410 pages imply, but there were too many faults for me to give it high marks. But they would be impossible to share without spoilers. So, suffice it to say if you read to find out “what happened“ you might love this book. But if you read for beautiful prose or believable, fleshed-out characters, give it a pass. #bookclubbook

Honestly this could have been a pick but I HATED the way Landay describes women. He is constantly talking about how the look (i.e. weight) and he referred to a female Judge with a derogatory name. It was a bit of a surprising ending to be sure, but it was just okay.

Wowza! A gripping courtroom thriller that examines the lengths one husband and father will go to protect his family. Make no mistake the pace of the story is slow and the legal process is stretched out in an effort to keep us dangling for over 400 pages to reach a jaw dropping ending.

I could not put this book down. It explored not just a crime but the reverberating effects of it from the investigation through the trial, and the psychology behind it all, as told from the point of view of the lawyer father of an accused 14-year-old boy. It was thought provoking and intense.

Jennifer3 @Cinfhen The intertwining is two stories and time periods is something I love, the Glassblower of Murano and Sarah‘s Key were two I read around the same time with the same style: (edited) 2y
Cinfhen I loved Sarah‘s Key...I bawled big fat snotty crying... although I disliked the present day story...curious about the other book... @Jennifer3 2y
Jennifer3 Sarah‘s Key did that to me too and I agree the present day story wasn‘t as strong to be complimentary to the story during the war. 2y
Cinfhen Right?!? It took away from the main story in my opinion but it was still a tear jerker...and I had never heard about the Paris roundup of Jews before. I was so shocked and saddened by that. We read the book for bookclub and my friend said her grandfather was taken from his home and brought to that stadium and he and his older brother were able to escape but his parents and younger sister did not survive. He was 11 and he lived in barns @Jennifer3 2y
Jennifer3 I did not know about the Paris round up either until this book had me researching. I can‘t imagine trying to escape at that age to survive and losing my family!!! What strength it took. The atrocities we inflict on each other is horrific, I really wish we could get to a better place. Litsy is such an amazing place to give me hope we can be better. 2y
Cinfhen My friend never met that grandfather but she said her father was very “damaged” as a child born to Holocaust survivors @Jennifer3 I really can‘t imagine the horrors. And yes, Litsy does give me reason to believe in the kindness of strangers. 2y

I started and finished this book loving it but then the more I thought about it the more loose ends I found. There were also times I thought the characters seemed to switch personalities.
The format switches between chapters and court transcripts to break it up. The court transcripts were my favorite parts to read.
All in all I think there should be a sequel to this one because I need to know what happens after this.
