A Red Herring Without Mustard
A Red Herring Without Mustard | Alan Bradley
In the third installment of this bestselling, award-winning, sister-poisoning, bicycle-riding, murder-investigating, and utterly captivating series, Flavia de Luce must draw upon Gypsy lore and her encyclopaedic knowledge of poisons to prevent a grave miscarriage of justice. “You frighten me,” the old Gypsy woman says. “Never have I seen my crystal ball so filled with darkness.” So begins eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce’s third adventure through the charming but deceptively dark byways of the village of Bishop’s Lacey. The fortune teller also claims to see a woman who is lost and needs help to get home—and Flavia knows it must be her mother Harriet, who died when Flavia was less than a year old. The Gypsy’s vision opens up old wounds for our precocious yet haunted heroine, and sets her mind racing in search of what it could mean. When Flavia later goes to visit the Gypsy at her encampment, she certainly doesn’t expect to find the poor old woman lying near death in her caravan, bludgeoned in the wee hours. Was it an act of retribution by those who thought that the woman had abducted a local child years before? Certainly Flavia understands the bliss of settling scores; revenge is a delightful pastime when one has two odious older sisters. But how can she prove this crime is connected to the missing baby? Did it have something to do with the weird sect who met at the river to practice their secret rites? While still pondering the possibilities, Flavia stumbles upon a corpse—that of a notorious layabout and bully she had only recently caught prowling about Buckshaw. The body hangs from a statue of Poseidon in Flavia’s very own backyard, and our unflappable sleuth knows it’s up to her to figure out the significance. Pedalling her faithful bicycle, Gladys, across the countryside in search of clues to both crimes, Flavia uncovers secrets both long-buried and freshly stowed—the dodgy dealings of a local ironworks, the truth behind the Hobblers’ secret meetings, her own ancestor’s ambitious plans—all the while exhausting the patience of Inspector Hewitt. But it’s not long before the evidence starts falling into place, and Flavia must take drastic action to prevent another violent attack. From the Hardcover edition.

Sometimes Flavia makes me wonder if there isn‘t any mishap or unusual situation she hasn‘t gotten into. At times this story was over the top, yet it was so much fun. I‘m looking forward to the next book in the series, but I‘ll wait a bit, as there‘s only so much of an 11 year old, chemistry-loving amateur sleuth I can take at a time 😄

RaimeyGallant Lol, love the pic. 6d

rretzler Love 💕 💗 Flavia. That series is one of my favorites, but at times it breaks my heart. Sometimes I think Alan Bradley is trying to take a page out of George RR Martin‘s “what to do with my characters” handbook!😝 2mo

Book 3 in Alan Bradley's Flavia Daluce series was another hit 😁 I've really enjoyed listening to the series and watching the character development from book to book. This book had a little bit more info about flavia's mom and some touching bits here and there. Hopefully as the series goes on I'll get to piece together a little bit more of that backstory.

Apparently the first three Flavia de Luce mysteries have all melded together in my mind. I read the first thirty pages of this book with a sense of deja vu. I‘m pretty sure I read the whole thing a couple of years ago and I wasn‘t crazy about the story then either.

Love me some Flavia de Luce shenanigans! The relationship between Flavia and her sisters crack me up. “You odious little prawn!” “You stupid sausage!”

Mdargusch That is one of my favorite parts of these books too - the sibling relationships feel so real and humorous. 12mo

I couldn‘t handle the voice of the narrator. I‘ll have to try in print format instead.

thereadingowlvina That happened to me too for some audiobooks 😐 12mo
Chellebearss @thereadingowlvina I listened to a sample and it sounded fine but once I started listening her voice grated on me. :-( 12mo
Chronic_Reader The narrator of Flavia novels definitely grew on me, but I couldn‘t stand it at first either. I‘ve listened to the latter half of the series, but I actually have this one in print and am looking forward to the difference! 12mo

Chellebearss @RaimeyGallant give it a shot. I struggle with female voices sometimes if they are higher pitched. I‘m going to give the print book a shot instead of the audio. I‘ve enjoyed the first two books. 12mo
Chellebearss @Chronic_Reader I don‘t think I could keep going with it. I found the voice too irritating. I‘ll try the print instead 12mo
Chellebearss @Ruthiella not sure if they are all the same narrator but glad that you‘ve enjoyed them 😃 12mo

leahbird Oh too bad. I love Jane Entwhistle as Flavia. I'm listening to the most recent, The Grave's A Fine & Private Place, right now. 12mo
Chellebearss @leahbird that‘s the same narrator that I had and I just couldn‘t handle her voice. Oh well, I‘ll try print instead :-) enjoy your listening! 😀 12mo
KateFulfordAuthor Just curious- for all readers - what does / does not make a good audio book narrator? I‘m considering doing my debut & have been thinking about what would make a “good voice” for Eve. Thanks all. 12mo
Chellebearss @KateFulfordAuthor I think being able to do multiple voices and keep an even pace are big things. (I listen at 1.25 or 1.5 speed so an even pace is important). Some of the things that would turn me off are not things you could control really. I tend towards deeper or male voices as female voices can get too high pitched for my preference. If you made a post asking this question I bet you would get lots of respond! 😃 12mo
KateFulfordAuthor @Chellebearss That‘s very useful - thanks for the thoughts 12mo

Another delightful visit to the world of Flavia de Luce. In this one Flavia investigated the beating of a gypsy & the murder of a local thug. Again I find Flavia a pure delight to follow, old friends wonderful to revisit, & new friends delightful to get to know. Entwhistle‘s narration is so perfect that I cannot imagine any ither voice for the inimitable Miss de Luce. I highly recommend you listen to this series if you can.

Book three in the Flavia de Luce mystery series finds Flavia hanging out with gypsies and discovering some family secrets. Flavia is as brainy and know-it-all as ever. Another good narration by Jayne Entwistle. I admit I find Flavia to be a tad annoying, but it is still a good addition to the series.

I enjoy this series when I need a fun read. It's like reading palate-cleansing. Haha!

This installment is consistent with the first two: young, clever, scientist/detective Flavia de Luce, who is terrorized by her older sisters and generally misunderstood by the world solves mysteries.

[I listened on Libby & own the series in hardcover.]

I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this story through audiobook. I was a bit challenged because the narrator wasn't how I pictured Flavia - too earnest and chipper or something - but I got used to it!

BestOfFates That's so interesting - I've only ever listened so the narrator is the epitome of Flavia to me! Though by the last one I was a bit tired of it. Quite a lot of pep! 2y
