BarbaraJean Emily‘s night of beauty under the stars is one of my absolute favorite scenes in this trilogy. That whole section where she and Ilse canvass for newspaper subscriptions still staggers my mind—two fourteen-year-olds, just turning up on a random doorstep and asking to stay the night! How‘s everyone‘s reading going this week? Which scenes have you particularly enjoyed? 4d

TheAromaofBooks Right?? I couldn't believe how they just would stay with random strangers, and went multiple days without contacting anyone from their families! So crazy.

Two passages I had noted this week. The first was about Dean. I was thinking about him and what beyond the age gap makes him so creepy. I think that if he just wanted to marry Emily it wouldn't be as bad - it's the fact that he uses her trust in him to manipulate her into being what he wants ⬇ 1d

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) her to be, and to convince her that she is less than she is. In the chapter Driftwood, we see the first instance of him really being so condescending about her writing because he KNOWS that Emily will only be a writer if she can be a great writer. Seeing him belittle her for his own ends just infuriates me.

The other passage I marked was later in the same chapter. Emily says that she read a story that ended unhappily and she says ⬇ 1d

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) “I shall always end MY stories happily. I don't care whether it's 'true to life' or not. It's true to life as it SHOULD BE and that's a better truth than the other.“ This sounded so LMM to me! As we've been reading her journals I've been amazed at how she could write such warm, happy stories during times of turmoil and intense stress in her own life. I so admire the way that she CHOSE to reflect good parts of life more than the bad. 1d

This quote gave me chills—we‘re reading this 100 years after its publication. I think Emily would find that an inspiring thought!

TheAromaofBooks I can't deal with Aunt Ruth and her “you're sly“ accusations 😂 And Creepy Dean is literally creepier than ever. Overall the whole everyone trying to convince Emily who she wants to marry even though she's an actual child is kind of weird. But I am enjoying looking for tiny bits of LMM within the pages!! 1w

BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Aunt Ruth is infuriating, and the way Emily handles all of it is a testament to how much Emily has grown!! I'd indulge in a LOT more smart remarks than Emily does. Aunt Ruth's persistent “but WHY did you do _____?“ (and then her refusal to accept an honest response to a ridiculous question) would make me want to slap her. I mean, Emily probably wants to slap her, too, but it's remarkable how much restraint she shows! 1w

Emily Climbs: A Virago Modern Classic | L. M. Montgomery

First read of 2024. Second installment of Emily of New Moon. This is a coming of age book, and it takes us on a journey through Emily‘s high school years, first attempts at serious writing, and even shows little bits of first love. I enjoyed the romance of it, but also the darkness. Interesting how the relationships are portrayed. For instance Emily‘s friendships with Perry and Dean (still creepy). I am looking forward to the final installment.

I've been reading this a little bit every day all month, but I read the last bit all today. I really do love these. Much as I adore Anne, there's something about Emily that draws me in more. I think part of it is the diary pages, where we read Emily's perspective in her own voice. I also love the times when LMM refers to herself as Emily's biographer, especially when she's stating an opinion. The narration feels so conversational and intimate.

BarbaraJean Isn't it fascinating to look back and wonder about your childhood reading? I read all three Emily books in jr. high or maybe high school, and remember thinking the first one was a bit slow, but loving the other two. Upon re-reading, I loved the first one the best. 🙃 2y

BarbaraJean Ha! Well, you‘re filling in the gaps now! The first time I remember reading a classic was when my (older) sister gave me a copy of Little Lord Fauntleroy. Not sure if she just wanted me to read classics, or if she thought I was reading crap and tried to redirect me 😂 It seems an odd choice now. But I remember thinking it looked SOOO BORING and then ending up loving it. That led me to Secret Garden and A Little Princess, which I also loved! 2y

What I love in this one is how Emily‘s view of the world changes by going away to school and how her relationships with her aunts change and grow as she herself grows older. Emily is one of my favourite characters in literature and I always enjoy visiting her.

Emily goes with her friends to school in Shrewsbury, and she stays with her aunt Ruth. I liked watching Emily growing up.

I love this book just as much as I ever did. 💜 With Emily off on her own in Shrewsbury, I saw so many similarities with Anne of the Island / Anne of Windy Poplars (and I do love Anne‘s adventures at Redmond and in Kingsport!). I loved seeing Emily‘s growing maturity as she makes her own way & begins to climb her “Alpine path.” #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

One of my favorite scenes is one Emily herself mentions--the night on the haystack. It's full of such beautiful description, and I could just picture Emily's beauty-loving soul drinking it all in. And the scene with Miss Royal and the dog is absolutely hilarious!! 4y

rubyslippersreads I like the woman who spanked the King story, but I don‘t really like Emily‘s “second sight” finding of the little boy. To me, it‘s not nearly as emotional as her finding of Ilse‘s mother in EONM , which always thrills me, no matter how many times I‘ve read it. I like the scene where Emily shows Evelyn the plagiarized poem, and the “look” between her and Teddy. ⬇️ 4y

rubyslippersreads And I like the dream she has about Teddy vs. Dean, because it reveals a lot about that situation, both to Emily and to the reader. 4y

quietjenn Emily's list is a pretty good one - except maybe the poetry bits, because I'm just not much of a poetry person 😉 But I loved so many of those other moments. And, as mentioned elsewhere, when Aunt Ruth gets gussied up and goes to set Dr. Hardy and Mrs. Tolliver straight! And right after that, the scene with the bad little dog and Miss Rivers. 4y

BarbaraJean @rubyslippersreads I agree about Emily‘s “second sight” in this one. It just doesn‘t ring true to me like the discovery about Ilse‘s mother. The episode in New Moon is far more organic and yes—emotional. There‘s a connection and a depth there that‘s lacking here. And YES about that dream. Very telling. I love the “look” scene, too! 4y

Bkwrm7 Perhaps because it comes at the end, my favorite is the scene with Miss Royal and the Dog. When they both realize the dog belongs to neither of them and you can go back through the conversation to see the other meanings of Miss Royal's side. Oh, I laughed! 4y

BarbaraJean @Jerdencon I kept thinking that, too! It was such a fantastic opportunity. But I also kept wondering why she had to MOVE there. She could have gone for a month or two, gotten introduced to all the Miss Royal connections, established those contacts and then gone back home to write in the place that nourishes her soul. I also kind of agreed with Mr. Carpenter that for Emily, moving to New York would completely change the tone of her writing. 4y

rubyslippersreads I don‘t think Miss Royal would be an easy person to live with or work for. And I can‘t see Emily, with her worship of nature, thriving in a big city. Like @BarbaraJean I think a short adventure in NYC could have helped Emily, but not a permanent move. As Emily herself worries, “the flash” might never come there. 4y

jewright I still kind of think she should have gone. We definitely all face those decisions that you know are going to change the path of your life forever, and you have to trust your instincts and just choose. 4y

quietjenn I agree that a visit or an internship (was that a thing back then? Probably not) would've been beneficial, but I think Emily was right not to go. Sometimes the opportunities that look ideal on paper are seem so obvious are really not the ones we need to embrace and I think Emily was quite wise to know that about herself. Might she regret it? Sure, but I think living in NYC would've fundamentally altered her in a way that she didn't want or need. 4y

AnneCecilie Another storyline that was not in my translation. But it sounds like an interesting one. I had to do some research since that are so many storylines that are unfamiliar to me, and from the English blurbs it seems that the first two books has been divided into three books in my translation and that maybe the last book hasn‘t been translated (at least it‘s not in the library) (edited) 4y

BarbaraJean @rubyslippersreads Exactly—Miss Royal and her dog would not have been the best fit for Emily. (I liked how well this was illustrated by the small comments about Emily needing a cat!) @quietjenn Yes, it‘s impressive that Emily is able to set her initial hero-worship of Miss Royal (and feeling flattered by the offer), to come to the self-understanding that she does. There‘s a strong sense of independence in Emily‘s decision. 4y

BarbaraJean @AnneCecilie It‘s so strange that your translations have been so different! Do you have a third book, but suspect it‘s material from the second book? On the first schedule post for Emily‘s Quest, there are a couple of links to electronic versions in English, if that‘s at all helpful to you. 4y

AnneCecilie In the beginning of my third book Emily has just left for school and is staying with her Aunt Ruth. I believe that‘s the setting for the second book. And the blurb for the third book doesn‘t match anything at all. The translations in the early 90s might have taken some liberties with the text. I‘ll read my third book and then I will check out your links. 4y

Clare-Dragonfly It really surprised me but it made sense! And I was glad she chose to stay. I suspect this may mirror Montgomery‘s own life choices, since she‘s known as such a Canadian author. 4y

BarbaraJean @Clare-Dragonfly Oh, that‘s a great observation—I think you‘re right in the parallel to Montgomery as a Canadian author. I thought it was so interesting that Mr. Carpenter didn‘t want to see Emily‘s outlook (and her writing) to become Americanized. I love that subtle assertion of Canadian identity. Montgomery is proudly Canadian and it comes through in her books, even so subtly. 4y

There‘s not a lot of overt talk of “beaux” in Emily Climbs (other than perhaps boring Andrew), and we don‘t see much concern over romance on Emily‘s part until that moment in the John house, and then her conversation with Teddy at the end.

What role do you see romance playing in this book, if at all?
What do you think of Emily‘s attitude towards romance vs. her ambitions?

Jerdencon I was surprised that there wasn‘t more development of her relationship with Teddy… I didn‘t understand the whole Andrew storyline. I guess the romance part is secondary to the story of her writing. 4y

sblbooks Emily is a very studious level-headed young lady. She doesn't want anything get in the way of her writing. I was hoping for more romance between her and Teddy, maybe in the next book. 4y

BarbaraJean I loved that Emily's first concern is her writing and her ambition to “climb the Alpine path.“ She says multiple times that she won't marry because of her writing. But there are those moments with Teddy that make it clear there would be room for Teddy AND her writing. @Jerdencon @sblbooks I agree that I want more development of their relationship! The Andrew proposal was fantastic, though: “Why should we get married?“ and “I wouldn't like it.“ 👏 4y

rubyslippersreads I think both Emily and Teddy are putting career ahead of romance, but Emily is still disappointed that nothing at all came of that look they shared in the old John house. If Emily were a different kind of person, she might marry Andrew, not because she loves him, but because she loves New Moon so much, and he‘ll inherit it when her aunts are gone. (Maybe “beaux” made me think of Scarlett in GWTW, who loved Tara more than any man. 😊) (edited) 4y

rubyslippersreads @BarbaraJean I‘m sure Teddy would be perfectly happy if he and Emily had dual creative careers. @Jerdencon @sblbooks Do you think Teddy just assumes he and Emily will be together and have that kind of life, so that, coupled with teenage shyness, keeps him from being more romantic? 4y

jewright It is hard to take that leap from friends to more. If it doesn‘t work out, you ruin your friendship. 4y

quietjenn I find it pretty refreshing that Emily is not all that concerned with romance and is so focused on other areas of her life, especially her writing. But I think that @rubbyslippersreads has a point and that there's something in both Teddy and Emily that assumes it will eventually work out for them to be together. 4y

AnneCecilie I liked that the book focused more on the friendships and Emily‘s writing. 4y

rubyslippersreads @Jerdencon I think the Murrays just expected the two cousins to marry, partly to solve the “problem“ of what would happen to Emily if some suitable man didn‘t marry her. 4y

Clare-Dragonfly I surprisingly felt like there was less romance in this book than the previous. Many of Emily‘s interactions with Teddy, Perry, and Dean previously felt like the narrative was breathlessly waiting for her to choose one in the previous book, but this one has obviously made the decision, and maybe that‘s why it feels more able to focus on her career. 4y

Bkwrm7 I think @Clare-Dragonfly has a good point - in Emily Climbs there's never any question that, if there is to be a beau, it will be Teddy. Maybe when Montgomery wrote book 1 she still hadn't decided yet! But I do like that Emily is so focused on her writing and career; that it's not treated as a placeholder thing to do or focus on until she can get herself married. 4y

There are quite a few unlikable characters in this book: Aunt Ruth, Evelyn Blake, and of course a bit more of creepy Dean.
How do you see these characters functioning in the narrative?
As much as we may (justifiably) dislike them, how do they affect Emily and her growth?

sblbooks Emily's experiences with Evelyn Blake and her Aunt Ruth are beneficial. She matured a great deal due to both of these relationships. I feel like the Dean storyline is utterly useless & creepy. 4y

BarbaraJean @sblbooks You're right, she really does mature because of both of them. As maddening as Aunt Ruth is, I appreciate that Emily learns how to “handle“ her. Especially in the whole episode with Perry. Emily admits where she was wrong, but also stands her ground in a way Aunt Ruth can accept. and I love how Aunt Ruth comes through in the whole scandal about the old John house!! 4y

BarbaraJean @sblbooks Dean... ugh. While I see the value of Emily finding that kindred spirit in Dean (and some of their conversations and letters are beautiful if unrealistic), Montgomery could have written a character who isn't an inappropriately older male with an obsessive/possessive fixation on her. Emily has an older male mentor figure (i.e. Mr. Carpenter) WITHOUT the creepy possessive part, so...yeah. 4y

rubyslippersreads I think it‘s quite appropriate that Evelyn Blake is Miss Brownell‘s niece. Dean is getting creepier (and Old Kelly is still warning Emily against marrying a Priest). And I actually liked Aunt Ruth for sticking up for Emily. 4y

quietjenn I think I feel more sympathetic towards Aunt Ruth than others and it was so cheering when she came through for Emily during the gossip! And I am *so* curious to know about the scandal in her past! But, mostly I just don't think that she understands Emily and it's frustrating that initially she doesn't really try. Evelyn Blake feels very real - I've know girls like that! 4y

quietjenn As for Dean, he just sucks. And everyone knows it except for Emily, so it's frustrating that no one is really pointing it out to her, except for Old Kelly and the occassional gossip that she won't pay attention to. As a kid, I don't think the age difference registered with me so much, but I still disliked him because of how possessive he was and how in this book we see him start to dismiss Emily's writing. 4y

BarbaraJean @quietjenn Aunt Ruth did grow on me by the end, helped along by her sticking up for Emily. That past scandal really humanizes her, and like you, I‘m dying to know what it was! I saw lots of parallels between Aunt Ruth in this book and Aunt Elizabeth in the first book. And I completely agree with you about Dean‘s dismissal of Emily‘s writing. It‘s so condescending, and I think another symptom of his possessiveness (reminiscent of Teddy‘s mother). 4y

Bkwrm7 I didn't like Aunt Ruth, but I loved her as a character study - you could just tell how infuriating she was and feel Emily's impotent frustration time and again. And the relief and triumph when she stood up for Emily! Evelyn was a strong foil. When they said she didn't graduate and Emily was sad about it.....because that meant she still had to deal with her! 😆 Dean continues to be gross. Being jealous of her writing is the worst. 4y

Did you think Aunt Elizabeth was reasonable/justified in demanding that Emily give up her writing in order to go to Shrewsbury?

How do you see the restriction on her writing affecting Emily, both personally and as a writer?

Jerdencon I don‘t think she was justified but it came from her limited understanding of Emily‘s need to write. She just didn‘t get it I felt and wanted to have some control of Emily. 4y

sblbooks No, I don't think she was justified at all. I'm glad it worked out in the end, and Elizabeth is now accepting of her talent. 4y

BarbaraJean @Jerdencon @sblbooks I feel like the same demand could have been justifiable if it had been for motives other than control and a sense that Emily's writing was a waste of time. I loved that Mr. Carpenter actually thought it would be a good exercise for Emily, and that in the end, it really helped her mature as a writer. But I was so mad that Aunt Elizabeth tacked on that demand when none of the other relatives thought it was needed! 4y

rubyslippersreads Aunt Elizabeth always has to have the last word. This is similar to her forcing Emily to choose between Mike and Saucy Sal in the first book. It‘s like she can‘t just give without tacking on arbitrary conditions. 4y

quietjenn I'm pretty ambivalent about it, perhaps because I know that the end result was good for Emily and her development. But it was extremely petty and controlling and doesn't help soften any sympathies we might start to have towards Aunt Elizabeth. 4y

AnneCecilie Aunt Elizabeth doesn‘t understand Emily and her restrictions comes from this. Like everyone else says she wants to control Emily. 4y

Clare-Dragonfly I think it was a pretty absurd condition—but it seems to have worked out well for Emily. 4y

Bkwrm7 Agree basically with everyone else here - definitely not justified on Elizabeth's part. It's good it made Emily a stronger writer, but it's a ridiculous and strange stricture to implement. 4y

Jerdencon I liked the first one better only because we were getting to know Emily. That said I did enjoy watching Emily grow up in this one. 4y

sblbooks I liked Emily of New Moon better. I enjoyed Emily's spunky side in that book. We got to know so many characters in the first book. 4y

BarbaraJean I'm so torn between the two. In my memories of the books, Emily of New Moon has been my least favorite, but I loved it so much this time around. And yet, I have such an affection for Emily Climbs. As you said, @Jerdencon--we really get to see her grow up. This book has a similar feel to Anne of the Island & Anne of Windy Poplars for me, with Emily's close-knit friendships and beginning to make her way in the world on her own. 4y

rubyslippersreads I love Emily of New Moon more and have read it more often than either sequel. I think it‘s partly because Emily is a little girl (as I was when I first read it). Plus she has to settle in to a new home, and we meet all the characters with her. However, I enjoyed this reread of EC more than previous reads, and I paid more attention to the Emily/Teddy and Emily/Dean relationships. (edited) 4y

quietjenn I think I liked Emily of New Moon more, for reasons similar to what others have said. I do love the way we see Emily grow here and I love that she is not idealized - she definitely has her faults and Montgomery isn't shy in exhibiting them! 4y

AnneCecilie I loved this so much more. The first book was a miss for me, and I connected with this so much more. Not sure why. 4y

Bkwrm7 I liked Emily Climbs more; something about the Shrewsbury people maybe and how they expanded the world. 4y

I enjoyed a few more pages with Emily this morning. I love L.M. Montgomery‘s writing, but these are always slow reads for me that I seem to want to savor rather than rush through. Between that feeling and keeping busy with school, I‘m still only about halfway through. However, I hope to fit in most of the rest this weekend before switching to my next book club read.

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead I enjoyed certain aspects of this series. There are some characters/ storylines I just do not like. Does anyone else think that Teddy's mom and Dean should get together, I think they deserve each other. @BarbaraJean

BarbaraJean Teddy‘s mom + Dean—😂😂 They‘re certainly both possessive enough, and probably the same age, I think it‘s a match! Although I can see how Dean as Teddy‘s stepfather might pose a few problems…😬 4y

Bkwrm7 Dean is even creepier in this one and there's a ton of stuff I don't remember well at all! Aunt Ruth is just maddening. But still enjoying it. :) 4y

TheAromaofBooks Besides creepy Dean, I'm actually enjoying this one more than the first book. I think it's a combination of having a better idea of what to expect, and it also doesn't feel like everything in Emily's life is going wrong like it did in New Moon. 4y

“I read the dictionary for a whole hour—till Aunt Elizabeth got suspicious… She couldn‘t see exactly why it was wrong for me to be poring over the dictionary but she felt sure it must be because *she* never wants to do it.”

First of all, I love a heroine who reads the dictionary for an HOUR. Second, just this little glimpse is so perfectly representative of Aunt Elizabeth‘s personality. It‘s both hilarious and maddening.

Somehow I did not come across Emily of New Moon until recently but better late than never! I loved this second book in the Emily series even more than the first as we follow Emily on her climb through adolescence towards her goal of becoming a writer. I think I‘m just going to jump right into the next book as I want to see how her story ends and am enjoying my armchair travel to Prince Edward Island.

vlwelser If you run out of Emily books, this one is also quite good. And there's a movie with Sarah Polley.

I got a plant identification app and it's my new best thing. It's so fun to finally know the name of things. And plant names are a word person's delight!
Finished book 2 of the Emily series this am. Might have enjoyed it more than book 1. On to book 3!

Not sure I agree (orange tabbies are pretty great) but grey cats are quite elegant.

I just need to take a moment to give some love to my all time favorite Canadian author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. The tagged book is one of the books that helped me fall in love with reading. I‘ve always loved books, but I‘m dyslexic, and had a very difficult time reading, even into my early teens. This one cadipoltded my love of reading to the next level.💜

Sometimes what I need is a good reread. Loved seeing Emily come into her own when she goes off to Shrewsbury. Her understanding of her family, friends, and self deepens in this book and the adults become more multi-faceted. The characters all grow in satisfying ways in this book. Perfect book for a break from daily stress.

Trying to do better with self-care this week and so I got out in nature. I found this lovely trail behind my local playground. I‘ve been coming here for years and never knew it existed. I think L.M.
