Apples Never Fall
Apples Never Fall | Liane Moriarty
From the outside, the Delaneys appear to be an enviably contented family. Even after all these years, former tennis coaches Joy and Stan are still winning tournaments, and now they've sold the family business they have all the time in the world to learn how to 'relax'. Their four adult children are busy living their own lives, and while it could be argued they never quite achieved their destinies, no-one ever says that out loud. But now Joy Delaney has disappeared and her children are re-examining their parents' marriage and their family history with fresh, frightened eyes. Is her disappearance related to their mysterious house guest from last year? Or were things never as rosy as they seemed in the Delaney household?

Definitely a tad too long, but overall I really enjoyed this one! Joy & Stan used to run a successful tennis coaching camp, while also parenting their own 4 potential tennis prodigies. But now in 2020, the business has been sold and their children long grown have no love for tennis or each other. When Joy goes missing old resentments and secrets surface. I thought the audio narration was fabulous and I really liked the family dynamics.

Joy, the matriarch of an Australian family who were brought up in the world of tennis, disappears one day and all sorts of family secrets come out into the open.

I listened to this on audio (it‘s quite a chunkster!) and thoroughly enjoyed it. It‘s reminiscent of Malibu Rising (lots of detail about minor characters as well as major ones, jumping to and fro in time) so if you liked that, you‘ll like this one too.

This story was nuts! The characters were all so quirky - made even more so by the narrator - and I really enjoyed trying to figure out what the hell was actually going on. I can‘t say that any of the characters were particularly sympathetic but I honestly didn‘t mind. Just a strange, twisty, and at times pretty sad story. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

11-10-21: My 112th finished book of 2021! The Delaneys are a tennis family. Joy and Stan, the parents, were tennis players & then coaches & raised their 4 children to play. When Joy goes missing, the Delaney siblings must rally around their father who may or may not have had something to do with it, but could it have been that strange girl Savannah who infiltrated their life the year before? A family saga told from everyone‘s point of view.

First of all, yes this book is too long. But after I got over that I did enjoy it. I was uncertain about how it would be resolved, which kept me turning the pages. It probably also helped that I like tennis so those details were good to me. The resolution of the mystery required some suspension of disbelief but I did like how she tied it all together and the ending was satisfyingly creepy.

Apples Never Fall is exactly what you‘d expect of a Moriarty novel: perfectly paced and totally readable, with town gossip and parallel timelines that keep you guessing. There‘s a cast of characters bound together, but each harbouring their own secrets. This is exactly what I'd hoped for when I picked it up: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/new-releases/

Moriarty is back in top form. A wrecked bicycle, a missing mother from a family whose whole lives revolved around tennis. Four children who all have hang ups. A stoic father who should have been the trainer of the world's best tennis player. A strange girl shows up at the mother and father's house one evening and everything changes

Great book. I‘ve been involved in sports a long time and so I particularly liked the focus on tennis/coaching/parents of athletes. I liked how the author occasionally moves the story along through the viewpoints of minor characters. She did a great job of showing how various family members have different recollections of past events. I also appreciated the main characters doing some self-reflection as it improved their relatability.

I‘d put this between a “Pick” & “So-So”.It was my first book by the author and based on this, I think I‘ll borrow her other books before committing to buying them. Not sure why this needed to be 450 pages long (the middle dragged on), and for some reason the “twist” annoyed me. Maybe because I felt like after such a commitment I wanted more? Pretty much all the characters besides Joy annoyed me too. Definitely a ‘borrow not buy‘. 3.5 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I love the way this author weaves a story and had an apple bucketful a good time reading this book. Joy, the 69 yo mother was a fascinating MC. Her grown-ass children were fun and complicated and demonstrated how four kids can be raised close in age within the same environment yet grow to be unique in personality. And Savanna - I don‘t have enough characters to go there!

The trick to this book is just to forget that it‘s by Moriarty. I loved her early books, wasn‘t a huge fan of the last two, and enjoyed this one. That being said, this one feels nothing like her early books. It‘s a slow meditative look at motherhood and family ties. It‘s about how our childhoods shapes us and the delicate line between our memories and adulthood. Recommended with that caveat. Expect a quiet, leisurely read.

AvidReader25 “All four of her children each fervently believed in separate versions of their childhood that often didn‘t match up with Joy‘s memories, or each other‘s, for that matter.”

“Any marriage of that many years has multiple motives for murder. Every police officer and hairdresser knows that.”

Not my favorite of Moriarty‘s, but I definitely enjoyed it! There was definitely a lot of tennis references so if you‘re into tennis that should add extra appeal. There is some suspense as you try to figure out what happened to Joy. The ending was satisfying. If you‘ve read Moriarty‘s other books then you should enjoy this one. It‘s not as absorbing as Big Little Lies or The Husband‘s Secret, but is definitely readable.

This was a well done mystery. It wasn‘t a thriller but a good mystery that you would be hard pressed to figure out early. It was also a well done family drama or examination on family. What is loyalty and what is an accessory? It also shows that love is messy. Excellent read and recommended.
