From the outside, the Delaneys appear to be an enviably contented family. Even after all these years, former tennis coaches Joy and Stan are still winning tournaments, and now they've sold the family business they have all the time in the world to learn how to 'relax'. Their four adult children are busy living their own lives, and while it could be argued they never quite achieved their destinies, no-one ever says that out loud. But now Joy Delaney has disappeared and her children are re-examining their parents' marriage and their family history with fresh, frightened eyes. Is her disappearance related to their mysterious house guest from last year? Or were things never as rosy as they seemed in the Delaney household?

The first book by Liane Moriarty that I didn‘t enjoy. I really love the sensation of the twist reveal in her books but this one left me shrugging my shoulders. I guess I just never warmed to any of the characters. I was quite disappointed after really loving all of the other books I‘ve read by this author.

This is a page-turning drama/mystery about a “successful“ tennis family. I love this simple bold cover design! 🍎

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!) Feel free to join in!

#12booksof2022 This one was very easy to pick, as it was the only book that I read in April. I didn‘t like it. One reason was that the author used the Covid pandemic as a plot point and it just hit a little too close to home.

Andrew65 Yes I don‘t want to read about that, no escapism whatsoever. 5mo

Pretty classic Liane Moriarty, serving up just the right level of domestic drama and mystery for my end of the year brain. I love tennis, so the context of this one really worked for me. Minus a star because an edit that shaved 100 pages would have tightened this right up. You know what you‘re getting here and it mostly works.

This book was good but a slow read. I found would get caught up in a few chapters and then the pace would slow down and I‘d lose interest however, I enjoyed the ending and overall found it a decent read

I really enjoyed this! I loved Joy, the Mum of a family obsessed with tennis. It was overly long at times but I loved all the family drama and the writing was so easy to read. Thank you @squirrelbrain for gifting this to me. 👍

It was ok, kind of dragged for me. So much about the characters I didn‘t feel necessary, but I think her writing is just not my style.

This was a real page turner. Told through a series of flashback and current events it cleverly weaves together the pasts of each characters. The result being that you are swept along in their mystery of Joy Delaney‘s disappearance, never being quite sure who may be involved. Twists and turns along the way meaning I often found myself thinking about this book during the day. I‘ve enjoyed most of Moriarty‘s books but this one more than most.

I wanted to love this book so much but I really just didn‘t. It started out strong and I thought the mystery was interesting. It‘s really the only thing that kept me going. It was so heavy on the tennis background and so long that I just kept losing interest. Also, the family dynamic was too much for me. It just didn‘t work, in my opinion. The twist was good, but this one was just okay for me.

I thought that conclusion was a bit messy and the flip flopping between past and present for 60 or so chapters was not my style I will try another book by this author though

Just like her last couple of books, this was definitely a bit too long…. But you know what? I still always enjoy Liane‘s books with all their complicated relationship stuff, and secrets and lies. This one was no different… tons of red herrings, lots of dry humor, sibling rivalries and just family soap-opera stuff that was fun and fluffy. Not my favorite but I enjoyed it none the less. Excellent audio narration as always 💕🎧

Someone recommended this book to me since I loved Big Little Lies so much, and I‘m glad I read it! I loved the writing and characters, some parts even made me laugh out loud. The mystery was enough to keep me interested throughout the whole story. The only thing is I will say that when the mystery was revealed/solved, I was a little underwhelmed (at least for one of them - because there are several!) Overall this was a great read

This story is told through the eyes of several well developed characters and bystanders and evesdroppers. It delves into the psyche of a family who fiercely love one another but can not for the life of them figure out how to show it. When their mother goes missing after an introduction to a stranger the father is accused of murder. The family dysfunction kicks into high gear as they can not communicate & take sides on mom vs dad.

Wagging school (as I do every year) and on my way to the Sydney Writer‘s Festival on the train. Hoping to get this book signed on Sunday. Catching up with a family friend and staying with my beautiful friend and godson who I haven‘t seen since last year when she told me she was pregnant and now she is about to pop. I liked this more than I thought I would! It was light and entertaining, and dramatic in a low stakes way. It could have used some editing - the end especially was massively dragged out, and it would have been really frustrating in print. Audio was a great medium, though.

merelybookish It is was definite too long but I enjoyed it too. Couldn't help but love Joy. 13mo

🌟🌟🌟🌟 Aside from being a bit longer than necessary and drawn out, I am happy to say Liane Moriarty is back! After that last disaster of a book, 9 Perfect Strangers, she still has my faith to spin a good story. Recommend

2.75⭐️ I thought the premise for the book was interesting, but by the end of the book I really didn‘t care for the family. I thought that the chapters that focused on the individual siblings were too long and found myself not really caring about the siblings. I thought that the chapters should have been shorter and the story shorter as a result. #2022 #fiction #contemporary #bookreview #bookstagram

This was a riveting book where I wanted to know what happened, but there were times where it moved slowly and felt repetitive. The ending remained a surprise and it was overall a good read even if it wasn‘t one of my favorites

I'm actually mad at the book and that's rare. Lol. Like Big Little Lies, I quite enjoyed the juicy, gossipy tone of the novel. It's Moriarty's style and it's fine if you want a light, relaxing read. However, it's not the ending itself which I disliked—I quite liked that bit—but the ending before the ending, so to speak. Will clarify in spoilers. I felt like I was invested in the book and its characters, only for a lazy whimper of a conclusion.

batsy I thought that after all that build-up about the Delaney family and Joy's story, which was quite revealing about the costs to women's lives, especially women of a particular generation, it was all wrapped up in a giant bow. They are just your average dysfunctional but loving family and nothing was lost; everyone is good. That felt like a giant cop out. A Hallmark card ending. I wish she'd given us a novel about Savannah and her mother instead.

CarolynM I've decided not to read any more of her books. I liked Big Little Lies, and The Husband's Secret was OK, but I was seriously annoyed by Truly Madly Guilty. 1y
batsy @CarolynM My sister liked The Husband's Secret and loaned me a copy ages ago, so I might get around to that sometime 🙂 But otherwise, yeah, I don't think I'll seek out her books anymore. 1y
EvieBee I read this for book club and the ending was a letdown for me. I even gave the book away, which is not something I normally do. 1y
batsy @EvieBee Yes! I'm surprised that none of the rave reviews in the media alluded to how silly the resolution was. 1y

My first book from this author and it was just meh for me. It‘s very slow and had too many characters to keep track of plus for a mystery it wasn‘t very engrossing. Just a so so from me, almost gave up on this one a couple of times through lack of interest

Karons1 I loved Big little lies it was a fantastic book but everything else Iv tried by the author has been 😐 um for me ! 1y
