Loving vs. Virginia: A Documentary Novel of the Landmark Civil Rights Case
Loving vs. Virginia: A Documentary Novel of the Landmark Civil Rights Case | Patricia Hruby Powell
54 posts | 40 read | 98 to read
From acclaimed author Patricia Hruby Powell comes the story of a landmark civil rights case, told in spare and gorgeous verse. In 1955, in Caroline County, Virginia, amidst segregation and prejudice, injustice and cruelty, two teenagers fell in love. Their life together broke the law, but their determination would change it. Richard and Mildred Loving were at the heart of a Supreme Court case that legalized marriage between races, and a story of the devoted couple who faced discrimination, fought it, and won.

I really enjoyed the illustrations in this one. I think it‘s ridiculous, what these people went through. I did not realize that the actual case title was Loving V. Virginia and it wasn‘t just a clever name for the book. 4⭐️

On June 12, 1967 the U.S. Supreme Court voted unanimously to overturn anti-miscegenation laws throughout the country. Since the landmark decision was made, today is known as Loving Day after Richard and Mildred Loving who never gave up in their fight to be recognized legally as husband and wife in every state.

This story broke my heart. To know that not too long ago you couldn't marry who you wanted and live with them and be recognized as husband and wife. This really hit me hard as I am in an interracial marriage and I couldn't imagine going through something like this and getting through it. I seen there was a movie about this and I wanted to read this short by enough to rip your heart out nonfiction book about The Lovings..
5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

ShyBookOwl I need to read this! I'm also in an interracial marriage and I do sometimes think about how we at one time could not have been. Have you read Kindred by Octavia Butler? 5y
BookNightOwl I have read that book. One of my all time favorites. Evertime she would time travel back I was like holding my breath. A great book and story. 5y

This novel in verse imagines the lives of Mildred and Richard Loving, the young couple involved in the landmark 1967 Civil Rights trial.

The state of Virginia argued that the 14th amendment do not cover “intermarriage.” The Lovings‘ lawyers argued that upholding Virginia‘s laws “amounted to legalized prejudice and relegated the Negro to second-class citizenship.”

My current read. I know next to nothing about the case and the couple, so this is a great learning opportunity. Plus, I love Ms. Powell's work. What category does a "documentary novel" belong in? Fiction or nonfiction?

Smithkatiea Just finished. What a beautiful book! What a sweet couple! What a shame that so much of their time together was fraught with strife because of the shallow, narrow-minded opinions of others who had no business weighing in with their two cents in the first place. (edited) 6y

My first read of June & I totally feel like it qualifies for #smellsliketeenspirit in #junetunz Millie & Richard fell in love as teenagers and proved what spirit & determination can accomplish. I thought the story was important but it felt a little short. Not the best telling or a great read. Good for just a brief overview I think.

Touching story about Richard & Mildred Loving, childhood sweethearts that grew up near one another, fought Virginia's anti-miscegenation laws, & won full recognition for their marriage in the Supreme Court. It's written in verse & does a great job conveying the hardships they faced—they were forbade from living together after legally marrying in DC & moving back to Virginia. Great book for everyone, esp kids, about interracial marriage. 👰🏾🤵🏼

As I listen to this I'm also reading March Book One (although not at the same time lol) and I just can't comprehend the hate that exists. The hate that drives people to hurt other people. People who aren't doing anything wrong. People who just want to be treated fairly. People who just want to love.

mllemay It's so absolutely senseless. It's one of the things that scares me the most about humans, that capacity to hate for hate's sake. 7y
ReadingSusan Agreed. I just can't imagine how a person can think things like that about another person based on outer characteristics. Ignorant. 7y

My parents are older than the Civil Rights Act. It's amazing to think how much the world has changed for their generation and how recent these steps to equality really were.

This account of the Loving family & their civil rights struggle breaks my heart & enrages me. How can it be that this happened less than 75 yrs ago in a country that boasts of freedom & equality? As this is yet another case & issue in America's past I did not learn about in school, I wonder if it's time to seriously rethink what we teach in history. How else will we prevent these inequalities and tragedies from happening again?

This was a wonderfully written novel in verse that alternates between Richard and Mildred's perspectives. It shows how their relationship develops, the difficulties they face, and their determination to keep their family together and live in Virginia. It also includes some photos and excerpts from historical documents that add to the depth of the reading experience.

At first I was put off that the book was in verse. However, I was able to move past that and be riveted by the story of how Richard and Mildred connected, fell in love, and married. They faced many struggles along the way. Reading it today offers a powerful reminder that love does trump hate. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
