Trying to hide from the past, Dr., Emma Lewis is called back to her hometown where a man is found on the beach with no recollection of who he is. The excitement of a potential fugue patient draws Emma in even with the risks of her past being dug back up. Emma‘s first meeting with her new patient reveals that although he has no clue who he is, he certainly knows her name and who she is.

Listy doesn't have this one, probably because its a short story and only available on Audible. I ❤️ it. If you have Audible, I recommend it 🎧

I seem to be a heat-seeking missile for books where a female psychiatrist and/or therapist fails to ethically lay her cards on the table when treating a good-looking guy. This one took awhile to get to the twisty pieces, then the author had to further explain explain those twisty pieces to her reader. It was an implausible scenario but entertaining nonetheless.

Slow-moving, completely unrealistic, an incredibly weak ending, and poorly written. Wish I‘d bailed but it was a book club choice and I felt I should keep going.

Not recommended.

A man is found on a British beach with no identification & cannot speak. Emma, a neuropsychiatrist, is asked to evaluate the man. The only problem is the patient is in the same town that Emma left 14 yrs ago & she‘s gone through great lengths to cover up her past. As she spends more time with him, she becomes scared that he knows something about her past that nobody knows.

Overall a thrilling read, but I wasn‘t overjoyed about the ending.

Catherine Steadman is also an actress, so I recommend listening to her books. She‘s a good narrator and I think it helps the story, which like her debut, gets kind of convoluted but still I wanted to know what was happening. An easy listen was just what I needed.

My working from home challenge is I can‘t have the TV on bc it‘s distracting but without it everything seems too quiet. I usually listen to NPR in the background but that is stressful now. So I‘m trying audiobooks that don‘t require close focus.

Beatlefan129 Same for me, it‘s so quiet when I‘m working at home. I may try catching up on some of the podcasts I used to listen to on my commute 4y

Woof! I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to rate this in stars. This was a really stressful read for me—so violent and creepy! That being said, I pretty much couldn't put it down. I liked the smart female doctor (overall), and a fair number of secondary characters, including one of the local police, doctor's brother, and one of the nurses.

Hmm...I guess I'd give this a 2.5 to 3 stars on a 5 star scale. It was just okay. It had some good parts, but overall it was underwhelming 🤷🏼‍♀️

Interesting! This one really kept me guessing and flipping the pages. There is a brain specialist brought in to treat an unusual patient displaying fugue-like symptoms who was found on a beach. The doctor has something about her past that is only revealed to us much later, too. The whole thing was cleverly done and had great twists and turns. The writing wasn‘t amazing, but it didn‘t stop me from enjoying it. I keep thinking about what happened!

LiteraryinLawrence My least favorite character was the reporter/wife Zara. I didn‘t get their relationship at all. But in a way she was a red herring because she wasn‘t really out to get Emma, just to get a story. 4y

Amnesia is a fascinating subject for a mystery and this one pulls out all the stops. It had me enthralled from the first page and constantly guessing (wrongly) what was really happening. Each character is well fleshed out, with relevant back stories and evoke feeling of sympathy/friendship. A brilliant second novel.

This was an interesting story with a clever plot line. It jumps around at the start from Emma learning about the case to mr nobody waking on the beach. I found the story steadily building to an ultimately chilling ending. It was well written and ended in a way that I actually thought worked well for the story. The scientific details are not too overwhelming but added depth to the story. #Netgalley 4*

A man with no memories; a woman burdened by her memories. This was well written and kept me guessing until the end- which was wild! Did not see that coming. It made me kinda sad though. I liked her other book better than this but I'll definitely watch for future books from this author.

Aimeesue Wait, you don't build them under the foothills so you can drive by the hot springs? 😄 The Lost Man's story is pretty interesting - I had to look it up! https://www.npr.org/2012/12/14/167187734/for-man-with-amnesia-love-repeats-itsel... 4y
bookandbedandtea @Aimeesue That IS interesting! And scary sounding. I'm surprised I don't remember hearing about it at the time. On the other hand I had little kids in the mid-aughts and probably didn't hear any news that didn't relate to baby food recalls, the necessity of baby Einstein to proper brain development, and the births of new zoo animals. 😁 4y

Thanks, #NetGalley, for indulging my love of amnesia stories! Told from mainly two perspectives, this fast TBR read starts with the titular Mr. Nobody who is found on a beach & the neuropsychologist who treats him whilst sorting her own past. A man, dubbed Mr. Nobody, washes up on a beach and has no recollection on how he got there or his name. Dr. Emma Lewis is brought into the case to figure him out and in doing so her questionable past is brought into the light putting her in danger. Hold out on this one because the real twist is about 80% in the book. Definitely recommend.

Kimberlone I think there was a movie based on this with Jared Leto 4y

I read Mr. Nobody in one sitting. I was up late finishing it. This tells the story of a man washed up on the beach who can't remember who he is but seems to know things about some of the people trying to help him, especially his neuro psychiatrist who is hiding a traumatic past of her own. Everytime I thought I knew the answer I was wrong. You will be kept guessing until the end. There were some parts at the end that bothered me. Free #netgalley
