Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? | Mindy Kaling
Amazon.com Review Guest Reviewer: Jennifer Weiner on *Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)* *Jennifer Weiner is the New York Times bestselling author of nine books, including Good in Bed, In Her Shoes, which was made into a major motion picture, and Then Came You. A graduate of Princeton University, Jennifer lives in Philadelphia with her family. * I know what youre thinking: really? Another memoir-slash-observational-essay-collection by a first-generation Indian-American comedy writer-slash-sitcom star who shot to fame with a cross-dressing impersonation of Ben Affleck? My bookshelfs full of those already! Stay with me. Because, no matter how many quirky memoir-slash-observational-essay collections by funny ladies youve got on your shelves, youre going to want this one there, too. Mindy Kaling is an American original. Born round, to delighted parents (Part of me wonders if it even made them feel a little prosperous, like Have you seen our overweight Indian child? Do you know how statistically rare this is?), she grew up in New England, enjoyed hanging out with her family, excelled in Latin, made her way to Dartmouth and thence, as is decreed by law and custom, to Brooklyn, where her smart-ass jokes about subway rape netted her and her colleagues a private Town Car to ferry them to their slave-wage job as production assistants on a psychic-TV show on cable. Youll get the story of Kalings rise to a job as a staff writer and eventual performer on The Office, along with behind-the-scenes dish, several damning photos of Rainn Wilson, and candid shots of her on her way to various awards parties where shed heard that Drake might play. But, you say, we want more than that! Dear reader, there is more. In addition to the how-to-make-it-in-Hollywood saga (it involves breaking your best friends nose, onstage, in front of an influential critic, and working eighteen-hour days without complaint), you will also get delightful observations on body image angst (Being called fat is not like being called stupid or unfunny, which is the worst thing you could ever say to me,), the duties of a best friend (I Must Be 100 Percent Honest About How You Look, But Gentle), a smart dissection of the women you will meet in rom-coms, and why men have it easier than women, in life and in grooming (Kiehls + Bumble and Bumble = Hot Guy). Its an autobiography crossed with witty observations with a twist of a shopping guide, and a pinch of Oprah-esque Your Best Life Now inspiration, told in Kalings singularly endearing voice. By the end of this book, you will want Mindy Kaling to be your best friend, and you will want her parents to adopt you. Since neither of these events is likely, or even possible, buy her book instead. Review Shes like Tina Feys cool little sister. Or perhaps the next Nora Ephron. The New York Times The fashion opinions of Kelly Kapoor mixed with a Miss Manners-esque advice column. EW.com If you love Kelly and think the three minutes or so allotted her on episodes of The Office are too few, you can take home Mindy. The New Yorker Is anyone else kind of sold on the genius title alone? Nylon Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) is hilarious and relatablejust like Kalings classic Tweets. The book is about the author Mindy and it is kind of just a dairy entry where she talks about why she as a kid was secluded and her childhood years. I really loved the book, I was really able to connect with some of the issues she faced when she was in her teenage years and i find it great to look at things from her POV. The book is first person POV and Mindy the author begins to tell us about how much she tried to fit in regardless of some issues

MissYaremcio Nicely done Hannah! I'm glad you liked it! I was just missing the recommendation. 5/6 2y

Written in 2011, many fans have already read this but if not, definitely should! Kaling is a witty, self-deprecating essayist and writer of the most hilarious episode of ‘The Office‘ involving a George Foreman mini-grill mishap. Also interesting is that Kaling wanted an all female remake of ‘Ghost Busters‘, even though she predicted there would be a male outcry against it. Maybe her prior work with a television psychic rubbed off?

maich @kimmypete1 What part do you like the most? I liked the first part. And also enjoy reading about copcakes. 3y
maich @kimmypete1 Did you watched The Office? I didn't but I checked trailer on youtube and will probably watch the show too. 3y
maich @kimmypete1 I think that Mindy is a wonderful and open person. She can be encourage woman (and also the book) because she just started doing what she wanted (writing) and she succeed. That is a great motivation. 3y
kimmypete1 @maich I did watch the office! First season wasn‘t as good, just FYI. I didn‘t know she wrote so much of it. 3y
kimmypete1 @maich I think my favorite part was her talking about how she got her start, Especially how no one really felt the office will be anything. 3y
kimmypete1 @maich I also really liked that she seemed so real, not putting on airs. Her lists were great too!! 3y
maich @kimmypete1 I was also surprised how much she wrote. Will try to watch something. I like comedy shows. 3y
maich @kimmypete1 Lists were agreat I agree with you. I found Matt&Ben show on YT. 3y
maich @kimmypete1 You listen an audiobook. I read kindle edition. There were picture from her live in the ebook. I like them. Her office, student room, she writing in bed, she with friends... Has audiobook any special part (sometimes they have some extra pages that are not in the book). 3y
kimmypete1 @maich Nothing special in the audio, in fact I missed out because of the pictures. I requested the ebook from library so I can see the pictures. She did narrate herself and it was fun to listen. 3y
maich @kimmypete1 audiobooks are better if author narrate them. Especially nonfiction. 3y
kimmypete1 @maich I 100% agree. Some of my favorite read by the author audios are Beauty Queens (Libby Bray - fiction) and Yes, Please (Amy Poehler) 3y
maich @kimmypete1 Yes, Please is on my tbr. She worked with Mindy. 3y

My husband and I just finished watching The Office (finally). I became a little obsessed with wanting to read more by Mindy Kaling, especially after noticing how many episodes she wrote. It was a fun quick book, not the best book I‘ve ever read, but a good mindless book to read at the end of the night.

I read or listened to this several years ago, but I didn‘t remember anything about it. I love Mindy, so I knew I had liked the book. It‘s amusing to listen to her life back in 2011, when Amy Poehler was still married to Will Arnett & Mindy hadn‘t started her show yet. This is a book that will brighten your mood.
Also, I need recs for audiobooks that are 4-6 hours long. I‘m not driving much, so I can‘t finish a longer book right now. Suggestions?

Ummmm I literally didn‘t stop this book until I finished it. Mindy is a comedic goddess and i laughed out loud most of the book. I 100% recommend this book if you like silly lists, down to earth narratives, and hilarious personal takes on just.. life stuff. But I 0% recommend because it will also break your heart when you finish it and have to come to terms with the fact that Mindy is not and will probably never be your best friend in real life.

marleed @NeedsMoreBooks @Schochrane I love to read memoirs anew from the library, but I find it‘s equally fun to read older and thrifted memoirs. I thoroughly enjoyed Kaling‘s autobiography for #NFNov. She tackles topics like her childhood, being broke and unemployed, studying at Dartmouth, her immigrant parents, how to be a best friend, her body size and fashion, her hatred for sports and athletics, her selfies on her Blackberry, and directions for her funeral. This was a quick fun read.

I read this when it first came out and loved it. I recently got into audiobooks, and was curious about memoirs / first person books that are narrated by the author. I love Mindy Kahling, so it's no surprise that I loved listening to her narrate her book. It felt like hanging out with with my most hilarious friend.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I'm am listening to this as well and it is my first ever audio book. I'm finding the audio version of this book much better that the print one. I guess I'm sold on audio books. 😊 5y
Ajessgirl @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I‘m also a recent audio book convert! I am definitely mindful of which books work well on audio (complex plots are best in print form for me) - memoirs and thrillers work well for me. I also like books that are told from different narrators‘ perspectives because there are usually different audiobook narrators for each character. 5y

I didn‘t love this. It was hard for me to tell when she was serious and when she was joking. Disappointing, since this was supposed to be a #funnybook I probably should have anticipated that it wouldn‘t be my kind of humor since I was never a huge fan of The Office.

#13of65 #audiobook

BookNAround I read this one and thought it was boring. Then again, I‘ve never seen The Office so have no idea who she is. That said, I think a good book wouldn‘t require you to already know and like the author to like the book. But I‘ve always been a curmudgeon about famous people memoirs. 5y
