Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) | Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleckimpersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I'll shut up about it? Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you've come to the right book, mostly! In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Doornot so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

I was given this book to read by a friend and I was hesitant to read it, not that I thought it was bad, it just isn‘t normally my first choice in reading materials. It turned out to be a surprisingly good and fast read.

lynneamch Enjoying it now on audio. 3mo
Brithomas17 This would actually be a wonderful book to listen to on audio! 3mo

Kaling is never not funny so I wasn‘t surprised to have enjoyed this book. It‘s a bit uneven, as are most collections, but when it is good it is poignant, honest, and very, very funny.

In an effort to be more active, I've tried out my first audiobook. 🍒💥 I tried reading the print version of this book and never ended up finishing it. I love Mindy but it feel flat for me. I thought this book was a much funnier in the audio version, would recommend.

RaimeyGallant Good to know! I was thinking of audiobooking her more recent book. At least I think she has another book... 5mo
MicrobeMom Agree! This was a great audio book! It is funny how so books are better in audio and some are worse. I think it is all a matter of who is reading the. 5mo
MallenNC Her second book was a lot better, I thought. I bet it would be great on audio. 5mo

I read this when it first came out and loved it. I recently got into audiobooks, and was curious about memoirs / first person books that are narrated by the author. I love Mindy Kahling, so it's no surprise that I loved listening to her narrate her book. It felt like hanging out with with my most hilarious friend.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I'm am listening to this as well and it is my first ever audio book. I'm finding the audio version of this book much better that the print one. I guess I'm sold on audio books. 😊 5mo
Ajessgirl @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I‘m also a recent audio book convert! I am definitely mindful of which books work well on audio (complex plots are best in print form for me) - memoirs and thrillers work well for me. I also like books that are told from different narrators‘ perspectives because there are usually different audiobook narrators for each character. 5mo

I wanted to love this book, or at least really like it. The Boston Globe called it “Very funny” in large font on the back cover. Dammit, Boston.

I still like Mindy Kaling, and I thought her book was fun... just not really funNY.

Mindy Kaling and I share a similar concern: is everyone hanging out #withoutme ? Probably, because I'm most likely at home reading. #AMonthofSongs

I didn‘t love this. It was hard for me to tell when she was serious and when she was joking. Disappointing, since this was supposed to be a #funnybook I probably should have anticipated that it wouldn‘t be my kind of humor since I was never a huge fan of The Office.

#13of65 #audiobook

BookNAround I read this one and thought it was boring. Then again, I‘ve never seen The Office so have no idea who she is. That said, I think a good book wouldn‘t require you to already know and like the author to like the book. But I‘ve always been a curmudgeon about famous people memoirs. 8mo

I would rate this book 4/5.. I wish I could give it 5 stars because reading it gave me some good laughs and I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the life of Mindy Kaling. I really did feel like I was hanging out with her! With that being said, there were some parts I found hard to get through and I had to read it between books instead of bingeing it like I had hoped. Still a good book and happy I finished it. 😊

I was a little disappointed with this book. From what I was told this book is funny and enjoyable. I did not think it was all that funny. I only really laughed at one part. There was very interesting parts of the book as she talks about her childhood, and of course her time on the office.

Ehhh, it was okay but at this point kind of outdated in the sense that some of the things she talked about no long exist, i.e Amy Poehler and Will Arnett‘s marriage. This book won‘t stand the rest of time. I will say after reading Mindy, Tina and Amy P‘s books, they all reference the same skit that Amy P did at SNL being 9 months pregnant and rapping. Each of their perspective on the same event is fascinating. I need to check it out!

quote
LibLib

“I always wanted the reboot of ‘Ghostbusters‘ to be four girl-ghostbusters. Like, four normal, plucky women living in New York City searching for Mr. Right”.....Little did she know that this would happen! She also wanted to be in the reboot of Oceans...and that happened for her! Maybe she can see into the future 🤫

I‘ve sped through this book. I frickin LOVE Mindy. She is the most relatable human on this planet, at least for me. In college in one of my Lit courses, my professor was sweet as pie and wicked smart, but she assigned The Winter‘s Tale. After our class basically told her it was terrible and we didn‘t want to read it, she AMAZINGLY let us drop it off the syllabus. Mindy is me. 💞

Great comedy-memoir: equal doses of background on how Mindy Kaling began her career in comedy writing/acting and random list-making run wild. I hadn't heard the story of many comedy writers as opposed to actors or stand-ups- interesting to hear about comedy arguments and what goes on in the writers' room. As for the funny parts, some of the jokes were clunkers, but she is so naturally funny that she can survive some misses- it's a numbers game.
