Sin Eater: A Novel | Megan Campisi
38 posts | 29 read | 56 to read
The Handmaids Tale meets Alice in Wonderland in this gripping and imaginative historical novel about a shunned orphan girl in 16th century England who is ensnared in a deadly royal plot and must turn her subjugation into her power. The Sin Eater walks among us, unseen, unheard Sins of our flesh become sins of Hers Following Her to the grave, unseen, unheard The Sin Eater Walks Among Us. For the crime of stealing bread, fourteen-year-old May receives a life sentence: she must become a Sin Eatera shunned woman, brutally marked, whose fate is to hear the final confessions of the dying, eat ritual foods symbolizing their sins as a funeral rite, and thereby shoulder their transgressions to grant their souls access to heaven. Orphaned and friendless, apprenticed to an older Sin Eater who cannot speak to her, May must make her way in a dangerous and cruel world she barely understands. When a deer heart appears on the coffin of a royal governess who did not confess to the dreadful sin it represents, the older Sin Eater refuses to eat it. She is taken to prison, tortured, and killed. To avenge her death, May must find out who placed the deer heart on the coffin and why. A keenly researched feminist arc of unexpected abundance, reckoning, intellect, and ferocious survival (Maria Dahvana Headley, author of The Mere Wife) Sin Eater is a dark, rich story replete with humor, unforgettable characters, and arcane mysteries. It casts a spell on your heart and mind until the final page (Jennie Melamed, author of Gather the Daughters).

Mary Owens, a fourteen year old girl has been imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread. The magistrate imposes a life sentence serving as a sin eater. Visiting the dying she, and her ilk, hear the confessions of the dying, returning to eat the foods that represent their sins, taking them into her soul. In short, sin eaters are damned. An interesting story, with a lot of plot holes. Described as a stand alone novel, the story needs a sequel.

This was a book club choice. I liked it more than I expected to for a book I didn‘t choose — but I still have complaints. I thought May‘s character seemed uneven: sometimes simple-minded (not just uneducated but oddly juvenile) & sometimes clever, keen, & resourceful. I also didn‘t get totally invested in the mystery/politics of the Queen‘s court. But it read quickly & the concept of “sin-eating” (expanded from an historical truth) is fascinating!

1st book of #20in4 done (though I only had a few chapters left). Absolutely stunning, & surprised this book doesn‘t have more hype. Set in a fictional version of 16th Century England, May is punished for stealing bread by having to live her life as a Sin Eater— someone who eats food that symbolizes the sins of the dying. Powerful, beautiful, & a rare historic piece where the protag fits with the era, as opposed to being modernized. All the stars!

Set in an alternate 16th century England, this novel follows a young girl sentenced to be a sin eater for stealing bread (yes, very Les Mis). An outcast to society, her circumstances appear dire but then she uncovers a dangerous royal plot and begins to realize the power she wields by being someone everyone fears to see, hear, or touch. A really fascinating and enjoyable historical fiction novel.

Historical fantasy, dark and compelling. Sin eaters eat foods symbolizing each of the sins of the deceased in a ritual so that the deceased can be spiritually cleansed. Young and orphaned May steals a loaf of bread and is sentenced to become a sin eater. Her mentor refuses to eat a false sin, and is killed. May is caught up in dangerous court intrigue as she attempts to uncover hidden secrets. Devoured in one sitting!

Kindle‘s don‘t always make for beautiful photos, but South African winters do. Almost finished Sin Eater by Megan Campisi. One of those books where you should completely ignore the publisher‘s blurb because it is completely misleading and nonsensical.

I‘ve done my best to avoid leaving my house since mid-March. Even seeing bookstores reopen hasn‘t been enough to get me out, but to try to counteract the anxiety that just thinking about being around people is causing, I went to B&N. Despite everyone wearing masks and doing a decent job of social distancing, I couldn‘t stay long. So much panic. But, new books! So, yay?

TheLibrarian I‘ve haven‘t been leaving my house for anything except on rare occasions. But I have been doing curbside pickup for books via my local bookstore. And hooray for new books! (edited) 4y
Tracyantoon I think every one of those books is on my TBR!! Enjoy!! 4y
Leftcoastzen It is such a weird feeling, I haven‘t been to a B&N yet , I went to my indie. You can‘t wait to get in, then you feel you need to get out.😬😞 4y

MsMelissa I‘ve only left my house a few times, mainly to go to the bookstore (and yesterday to a furniture store), but I feel relatively safe because all stores have to limit the number of people inside them at a time, and masks are now mandatory. But our case numbers are really low (🤞🏻 they stay that way). If I was anywhere in the U.S. I don‘t think I‘d leave my house though - I can‘t believe the number of cases south of the border! 4y
rabbitprincess ♥️♥️♥️ for giving it a go! I‘m glad people were wearing masks but I agree it is a high-stress situation. Haven‘t been shopping for fun yet myself...the closest I get to that is going to the library for contactless pickup. 4y
DGRachel @Leftcoastzen Exactly! I debated going to my indie yesterday, but it‘s a smaller, tighter environment than the B&N, so I just couldn‘t. @Book_Fiend_Melissa I‘m so ashamed of my country. So ashamed. 😔 4y
Graciouswarriorprincess @DGRachel I hear you. I have been in our local B&N twice since they reopened but only to pick up pre-ordered books. They would have brought them out but I just needed to get out besides grocery shopping. However, once I was in the store, I couldn‘t wait to get out and there were only the people working there. Stay safe! 4y
MsMelissa Honestly, I feel so bad for those of you who are trying to do the right thing, and are taking the virus seriously. It seems like too many Americans just don‘t care and don‘t think it will affect them. 4y
Leftcoastzen @Book_Fiend_Melissa I am embarrassed for my country,so many idiots. So many people think their little event won‘t harm anyone, hundreds of events are happening, my state now among the worst, we shut down late ( and not completely) opened early , no leadership from Governor.Prescott ,Az. had a full week of rodeo with fans. 4y
LibrarianRyan I‘m reading Race the sun as we speak. Liking it so far. 4y
DGRachel @LibrarianRyan Good to know! I‘m looking forward to it. 4y
UwannaPublishme I hear you all. I‘m staying indoors until more people get with the program. Good thing our governor has been proactive. But I‘m still ordering new books online from my indie store. Hope you‘re all staying safe and doing well. 🙏🏻 4y
DGRachel @UwannaPublishme @Leftcoastzen The governor here has tried to be responsible, but the governor to the south is terrible and I‘m right on the border. Plus, living in the South, I‘m surrounded by people who think mask mandates violate their rights and that we should open all schools and businesses because #freedom. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I don‘t think I‘ll be going out again any time soon. 4y

Peaches for reading, limes for envy...
Megan Campisi takes the historical concept of a sin-eater and applies it to a pseudo historical setting where only the Sin Eater knows that people are dying near the Queen, and she might be the only person who can figure it out.⤵️

ReadingEnvy I definitely couldn't put the book down; some of the ahistorical details made me shake my head (mostly words for body parts and name choices) but I liked the concept of the point of view of a person who suddenly can't speak and must be ignored by everyone around her, a true underbelly narrative. 4y

This was SUCH an interesting read! Based on the true existence of sin eaters, it is a very intriguing topic. The writing was wonderful & effectively evoked the time setting of the narrative, which was both impressive & endearing. The parallels to Tudor England were fun & enjoyable. Transitions were a bit rough & a slower pace could have been helpful, but the story flowed well & I found myself not wanting to put the book down.

This was intense, and not for those with an low gag reflex! In a society where a chosen woman hears confessions of the dying and has to eat the food representing each associated sin upon their death. The new sin eater uncovers a murder conspiracy based on the sins she hears. I enjoyed it this one, kept me guessing a bit!

Compelling story of a young woman forced to become a Sin Eater as punishment for theft. Part conspiracy thriller, murder mystery and part commentary on power, and what it means to be feared or “undesireable”. The ending felt all at once toO quickly wrapped up and open ended that makes be think there might be a continuation of the story. Overall a great read.

A creepy, intriguing story that's a mix between historical fiction & dystopia. Main character, May, has gotten caught stealing bread to keep herself from starving. In turn, she's sentenced to become the town's new Sin Eater, having to learn the trade and get used to being treated as a curse. When she's called to the Queen's residence to take on the sins of a dying chambermaid, her life starts to take another unexpected turn.
