John Persons is a private investigator with a distasteful job from an unlikely client. Hes been hired by a ten-year-old to kill the kids stepdad, McKinsey. The man in question is abusive, abrasive, and abominable. Hes also a monster, which makes Persons the perfect thing to hunt him. Over the course of his ancient, arcane existence, hes hunted gods and demons, and broken them in his teeth. As Persons investigates the horrible McKinsey, he realizes that he carries something far darker than the expected social evils. Hes infected with an alien presence, and hes spreading that monstrosity far and wide. Luckily Persons is no stranger to the occult, being an ancient and magical intelligence himself. The question is whether the private dick can take down the abusive stepdad without releasing the holds on his own horrifying potential. This tale starts with a detective that gets approached by a young boy, asking him to kill his stepfather. Khaw uses her very healthy vocabulary to draw this tale of a hard boiled detective mystery surrounding a cosmic infestation. I dug this. It was 100 pages and got me through laundry in a blink of an eye. Lots of eyes. Eyes in the neck, on the arms, everywhere. 👁️👁️👁️

Billypar If the book is half as creepy as that background, I'm sold! 😱👀😱👀 13mo
Reggie @Billypar yeah, at first it starts off real casual and then ramps up. 13mo

🌟🌟 First of all, I‘m not a fan of hard boiled fiction and second of all if you‘re going to create a Lovecraftian story, that genre doesn‘t mean you just use words like old gods and tentacles and think that‘s what you got.

Lovecraft created an atmosphere so thick you could hardly breathe. It was next level!!! It‘s so much more but than just it‘s lore. This was a fail! Other authors have done way better.

It takes a monster to kill monsters in this novella about a private-eye, in a slightly strange but recognizable London, hired by a ten-year-old to kill the boy‘s stepfather. It‘s both that simple and anything but as working the case reveals even darker, more dangerous secrets. An entertaining read.

This is book 24 for #Scarathon2021 @Clwojick #TeamSlaughter
If this hadn't been a novella I wouldn't have finished it. There was absolutely no character development and the prose was lack luster. It was supposed to be creepy but the prose was so bad I just found it wierd and not in a good way. 2⭐ but only because I finished it instead of bailing.

A fun but disturbing horror novella with noir and Lovecraftian elements.

This satisfies the #screamathon week 2 prompt (horror by female POC).

Saturatedly Lovcraftian noir, showcasing florescent levels of gore. I liked the gore better than the gumshoe playing the stooge. Low pick, but I'll read the next in the series.

A quick, fun and modern Lovecraftian read about a detective hired by a boy to kill his father. Sometimes the monsters are real.

P.I. John Persons is hired by a 13-year old kid to kill the kid's stepfather. The boy thinks his stepdad is a monster. Persons believes it's possible-- after all, he's a monster himself. It's a noir thriller set in Lovecraft land, and it's just delicious with creepiness and gore and a hard-boiled heart. Also it's short so: more please!

This was an interesting read for me. You follow a P.I who is hired by an 11 year old to kill his step dad. There are alien/monster creatures living in this world taking over humans. A very dark atmosphere and very compelling. Others compare it to H.P Lovecraft, I can‘t since I will be honest I have NEVER read Lovecraft. But if you have this might be right up your alley.

The biggest problem with this book was that it was too short! A novella that flies by and had just enough tentacles for Squidapus to identify with it. While noir by way of Lovecraft is the new hotness, Khaw has a very clever way with words so even with it's brief page count you get characters full of personality and a tight little adventure with a gritty, slimy case to solve. It's length means you can't stay with it too long tho.

Hard boiled Lovecraftian fantasy horror, and it is a fast read (novella), loads of fun actually. Private eye John Persons is tasked with killing his 10 year old client‘s stepfather who is a misogynistic toxic monster; the men seem to be infected with violence.Persons is a monster, too, of a different kind and he goes hunting. What is funny is the Mickey Spillane dialog Persons speaks with that doesn‘t compute with modern day!

I find my way into the old Caribbean joint. It's smaller than I remember. Half of it's been transformed into a bare-bones grocery, all essentials, no luxuries. What remains is fragrant with allspice and roast chicken, a heady chiaroscuro of flavors and memories, enough to make a dead man's mouth water.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5 ⭐️s.

The premise for this novella pretty much presses a lot of my interest buttons: Lovecraftian horror and hardboiled detective fiction against a London backdrop? Definitely in my wheelhouse :D. Unfortunately, the story is pretty bare bones - I feel like it could have been a good twenty or thirty pages longer and I wouldn't have minded the length. Hopefully the sequel will be better about this :).

I'm not a big fan of Litsy's ratings. The "So-so" rating is equivalent to a 3/5 stars for me. But "so-so" makes it sound like I didn't enjoy it! Anyway, I quite enjoyed Hammers On Bone. It's creepy & Imaginative and a little shocking at the end. It's a great winter read. This is a Lovecraftian take on a detective story. So expect ancient ones and tentacles. ?

Persons, a London PI, is visited by a 10 yo boy asking him to kill his stepfather, McKinsey, before he harms his brother. McKinsey is not only abusive but also inhabited by a dark, alien presence. He's been hired bc of his own ties to the occult; it takes a monster to kill a monster. What happens if Persons releases his monster? Khaw creates fun Lovecraftian noir novella w/atmosphere, a tight narrative, & great backstory w/hints of horror. 🕵🏻🐙
