John Persons is a private investigator with a distasteful job from an unlikely client. Hes been hired by a ten-year-old to kill the kids stepdad, McKinsey. The man in question is abusive, abrasive, and abominable. Hes also a monster, which makes Persons the perfect thing to hunt him. Over the course of his ancient, arcane existence, hes hunted gods and demons, and broken them in his teeth. As Persons investigates the horrible McKinsey, he realizes that he carries something far darker than the expected social evils. Hes infected with an alien presence, and hes spreading that monstrosity far and wide. Luckily Persons is no stranger to the occult, being an ancient and magical intelligence himself. The question is whether the private dick can take down the abusive stepdad without releasing the holds on his own horrifying potential. This is book 24 for #Scarathon2021 @Clwojick #TeamSlaughter
If this hadn't been a novella I wouldn't have finished it. There was absolutely no character development and the prose was lack luster. It was supposed to be creepy but the prose was so bad I just found it wierd and not in a good way. 2⭐ but only because I finished it instead of bailing.

A fun but disturbing horror novella with noir and Lovecraftian elements.

This satisfies the #screamathon week 2 prompt (horror by female POC).

Saturatedly Lovcraftian noir, showcasing florescent levels of gore. I liked the gore better than the gumshoe playing the stooge. Low pick, but I'll read the next in the series.

A quick, fun and modern Lovecraftian read about a detective hired by a boy to kill his father. Sometimes the monsters are real.

P.I. John Persons is hired by a 13-year old kid to kill the kid's stepfather. The boy thinks his stepdad is a monster. Persons believes it's possible-- after all, he's a monster himself. It's a noir thriller set in Lovecraft land, and it's just delicious with creepiness and gore and a hard-boiled heart. Also it's short so: more please!

This was an interesting read for me. You follow a P.I who is hired by an 11 year old to kill his step dad. There are alien/monster creatures living in this world taking over humans. A very dark atmosphere and very compelling. Others compare it to H.P Lovecraft, I can‘t since I will be honest I have NEVER read Lovecraft. But if you have this might be right up your alley.

The biggest problem with this book was that it was too short! A novella that flies by and had just enough tentacles for Squidapus to identify with it. While noir by way of Lovecraft is the new hotness, Khaw has a very clever way with words so even with it's brief page count you get characters full of personality and a tight little adventure with a gritty, slimy case to solve. It's length means you can't stay with it too long tho.

Hard boiled Lovecraftian fantasy horror, and it is a fast read (novella), loads of fun actually. Private eye John Persons is tasked with killing his 10 year old client‘s stepfather who is a misogynistic toxic monster; the men seem to be infected with violence.Persons is a monster, too, of a different kind and he goes hunting. What is funny is the Mickey Spillane dialog Persons speaks with that doesn‘t compute with modern day!

How I enjoyed this powerfully written Lovecraftian noir. It successfully blends traits from both niches without being predictable and crackles with the kind of exquisite prose you can dig into with a spoon. John Persons, a PI who himself is an eldritch being, is hired by a young boy to kill his step-dad, who embodies a monster both other-dimensional and basely human. Set in modern day London, it doesn't just tackle horror of cosmic proportions 👇

rohit-sawant but also delves into domestic violence. It builds up to a solid denouement that unfurls mind-bending visuals wrapped in a cornucopia of violence, and ends on a note revealing a larger picture, hinting at more to come. 4y

vivastory What did you think of IT? 4y
rohit-sawant @vivastory Watching it again this week. 😁 It was everything I'd hoped for, man. I loved how they focused on the bond between the characters instead of Pennywise, Skarsgård's take was brilliant considering he had big shoes to fill. I found it really well balanced, the chills, laughs, pathos, romance. I also didn't expect to like the score as much as I did. Did you check it out? 4y
vivastory @rohit-sawant I watched it yesterday. I agree. I enjoyed the inclusion of scenes from the book that weren't in the 1990 film version (Beverly & the tape measure in the bathroom). Although it's impossible to capture the scope & cosmic horror of the book without doing a Peter Jackson lotr style trilogy. But I found it to be an effective adaptation, while it veered away from the source material it remained true to the spirit. 4y
vivastory @rohit-sawant There were some great Easter Eggs, I think a second viewing would reveal even more. Did you catch the changing movie titles on the theater marquee? Also, when they were swimming & they mentioned the turtle in the lake. 4y
rohit-sawant @vivastory The turtle made me grin. I missed out on the changing movie titles but heard about it on a YouTube review later. I think they referenced the turtle again visually when Bill goes into Georgie's room. Another Easter Egg that slipped past me though I spotted it in the trailer was Tim Curry's Pennywise in the clown room where It attacks Richie. And true it's difficult to encompass the scope of the novel, but it captures the spirit so well. 4y
rohit-sawant @vivastory I read somewhere they wanted to include a scene about mankind's first encounter with It, which AM was hyped about, but because of length issues they bumped it into the sequel, and there are also talks about including the Black Spot scene. It'll be interesting to see how they translate the cosmic scale of the ending, can't help but imagine something like Interstellar on crack. It was the most satisfying King adaptation in recent years. 4y
rohit-sawant @vivastory Another upcoming King movie that seems promising is Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Gearld's Game. The book is still on my TBR but hoping to make it my next SK read. 4y
vivastory @rohit-sawant Interstellar on crack is a great way to describe the ritual of chud & the deadlights. I'm really looking forward to Gerald's Game. It comes out the day I leave for St Louis to see Stephen and Owen King read. Are you enjoying 20th Century Ghosts? 4y
rohit-sawant @vivastory Man, that's so awesome you're attending the event! I hope I get to see Uncle Stevie in person someday. And I'm enjoying the hell out of 20th Century Ghosts. Whenever I finish a story I feel compelled to reread it, but I'm also eager to dive into the next one. I have JH's Heart-Shaped Box queued up as an October read. 4y
vivastory @rohit-sawant Both 20th Century Ghosts & Heart Shaped Box are at the very top of my horror tbr. That was a great article on IT. I also appreciated how they didn't use pop culture references as a substitute for personalities & it did feel more natural. Thanks for sending it to me. 4y
vivastory @rohit-sawant I know you've been reading Tor shorts & novellas recently, I haven't read this one yet but I thought it sounded interesting 4y
rohit-sawant @vivastory I was sold at demon deer. That probably has to be the most metal blurb I've read in awhile. Thanks for sharing! I'm literally saying this about so many books, but gonna try and get to it soon. I think there's also a story by Killjoy in that Tor 2016 antho. Next time I tap it open I'll make that one a priority, too. Wish I was a fast reader. 😧 4y

I find my way into the old Caribbean joint. It's smaller than I remember. Half of it's been transformed into a bare-bones grocery, all essentials, no luxuries. What remains is fragrant with allspice and roast chicken, a heady chiaroscuro of flavors and memories, enough to make a dead man's mouth water.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5 ⭐️s.

The premise for this novella pretty much presses a lot of my interest buttons: Lovecraftian horror and hardboiled detective fiction against a London backdrop? Definitely in my wheelhouse :D. Unfortunately, the story is pretty bare bones - I feel like it could have been a good twenty or thirty pages longer and I wouldn't have minded the length. Hopefully the sequel will be better about this :).

Mehso-so

I'm not a big fan of Litsy's ratings. The "So-so" rating is equivalent to a 3/5 stars for me. But "so-so" makes it sound like I didn't enjoy it! Anyway, I quite enjoyed Hammers On Bone. It's creepy & Imaginative and a little shocking at the end. It's a great winter read. This is a Lovecraftian take on a detective story. So expect ancient ones and tentacles. ?

Persons, a London PI, is visited by a 10 yo boy asking him to kill his stepfather, McKinsey, before he harms his brother. McKinsey is not only abusive but also inhabited by a dark, alien presence. He's been hired bc of his own ties to the occult; it takes a monster to kill a monster. What happens if Persons releases his monster? Khaw creates fun Lovecraftian noir novella w/atmosphere, a tight narrative, & great backstory w/hints of horror. 🕵🏻🐙
