Dooku: Jedi Lost (Star Wars)
Dooku: Jedi Lost (Star Wars) | Cavan Scott
15 posts | 13 read | 3 to read
Delve into the history of the sinister Count Dooku in the original script to the thrilling Star Wars audio production! Darth Tyranus. Count of Serenno. Leader of the Separatists. A red saber, unsheathed in the dark. But who was he before he became the right hand of the Sith? As Dooku courts a new apprentice, the hidden truth of the Sith Lord's past begins to come to light. Dooku's life began as one of privilege--born within the stony walls of his family's estate, orbited by the Funeral Moon where the bones of his ancestors lie interred. But soon, his Jedi abilities are recognized, and he is taken from his home to be trained in the ways of the Force by the legendary Master Yoda. As he hones his power, Dooku rises through the ranks, befriending fellow Jedi Sifo-Dyas and taking a Padawan of his own, the promising Qui-Gon Jinn--and tries to forget the life that he once led. But he finds himself drawn by a strange fascination with the Jedi Master Lene Kostana, and the mission she undertakes for the Order: finding and studying ancient relics of the Sith, in preparation for the eventual return of the deadliest enemies the Jedi have ever faced. Caught between the world of the Jedi, the ancient responsibilities of his lost home, and the alluring power of the relics, Dooku struggles to stay in the light--even as the darkness begins to fall.

I did a re-listen to this audio drama to see if there were any overt connections to the High Republic and because I am rewatching the Clone Wars animated series. My original review stands: it's just okay, with a big miscast in the Dooku voice role. It covers Dooku's background, but ends when he leaves the Jedi order, so it kinda stops at the point in his history most people would be interested in. Certainly not essential reading.

One plus to working lots of extra hours, I get a lot of time for podcasts and audio books. I really enjoyed listening to this and learning Dooku's back story. Finished for February #starwarsbuddyread

So how did it go this month #StarWarsBuddyRead?

I enjoyed this one more than I expected (I usually don‘t enjoy the “bad guy” narratives as much), but I love Ventress, and lucky for me there is more Asajj coming up our next read for March.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘m not what I would call a Star Wars fan, but certain characters certainly intrigue me more than others. Would you say one could read this without extensive Star Wars knowledge or should I go rewatch a movie or two before diving in? 😅 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Do you know who Count Dooku is at all? He was a Jedi Knight who fell to the darkside. He is in the prequel movies as a Sith. And this is basically his backstory. How he became that way. Ventress is one of those characters that intrigue me, she comes into this because he wants to make her his assassin. She has a complicated backstory too, and it‘s laid out here too. If you are interested, I‘d suggest the audio- ⤵️ 3y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa -book (if you can get it) because it is read by a full cast. The book version came later, and is set up almost as a play when you read it in that format. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I should probably add Ventress appears in The Clone Wars TV series. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm What other characters intrigue you? Maybe I could suggest some books. 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Yes, Dooku is one of the few characters I found interesting enough from the films to want to know more. The only other Star Wars book I‘ve ever read also involved some of his and Qui-Gon‘s backstory. I do not know who Ventress is at all. 😅 I basically stopped watching the films after Rogue One and haven‘t watched any of the series. Thanks for the tip, I don‘t audio-read enough, so I‘ll definitely have to check it out! 😊👍 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Lol, mostly any of the Sith intrigue me, like Dooku or Darth Maul. I‘m a sucker for “bad guy” stories. But Qui-Gon Jinn is probably my all-time favorite character... aside from pre-Anakin Darth Vader. 😂 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm You‘ll like this one then. It delves into his childhood, how he is a Count, some of his mentoring of Qui-Gon is in here. I‘m assuming you read Master & Apprentice... I liked that one too. 3y
BookwormAHN I really enjoyed this one. The audiobook was fantastic 😺 3y
Jari-chan It's the same with me - I've enjoyed it more than expected 😁 Since I've already read (And LOVED) Dark Discipline, I'm skipping March. But I'll be around in April again 😊 Also, I'm up for discussions! 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm It was actually Legacy of the Jedi, a mid-grade novel. 😅 But now I have two to add to my TBR! 😍 Thank you! Star Wars is like roller coasters for me: I really, REALLY want to like it...I just can‘t seem to manage it. 😂🤣 I appreciate the recommendations, I‘ll certainly delve into these! ❤️ 3y
MoMogrl I am enjoying this so far. Listening to the audiobook and really like the full cast. Hopefully I will finish this week. Dooku always intrigued me and I wasn't at all familiar with Ventress until I started watching the clone wars series this year. (Late I know) 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MoMogrl Nope, I‘m late to that party too. I loved Rebels, but I was in a bit of a funk after the prequels and didn‘t really get into the Clone Wars until later... I don‘t think I even paid any attention, except to Ahsoka... I should probably watch them from the beginning. 3y
MoMogrl @Riveted_Reader_Melissa my husband and I are watching in chronological order which I think makes it easier to follow. 3y

I don‘t always enjoy the “bad guy” narratives, but I did this one! It delves into the past, and delivers a great story of how even those who are the best of us can struggle, and with a tiny mistake or one wrong choice can stumble and be pushed over the edge. I understand Dooku‘s arc much better now than I did before, and I‘d could still read more about Ventress.

Thank you very much for recommending the audio book @BookwormAHN - I enjoyed it so much! The cast is great, so is the music - I almost felt like being at the movies!

I also enjoyed the book itself. The great thing about the Star Wars universe is that enemies as well get to tell their stories. I loved that we also get to know Ventress better. She's one of my favourites 😊

BookwormAHN I started it last night when my audiobook hold came in. It's done with a full cast and so far really good. 3y
Jari-chan @BookwormAHN Because of your comment I also got the audio book, instead of the printed copy 😄 3y

One of the best new Canon novels to come out. This made Dooku my favorite bad guy but I wouldn‘t even call him a bad guy. His struggle is one I think we‘d all have. Just an excellent story.

I don‘t listen to audiobooks much now but I LOVE the production values of Star Wars-it just sucks me in. I have settings for 21 day loan on my Libby, if this book only saved for 14 days does that mean someone is waiting on it? Any Libby users know? #starwars

Riveted_Reader_Melissa For me it depends on the library and their settings with Overdrive/Libby. My local (much smaller) library is always 2 weeks. The free (in PA) library of Philadelphia is 3 weeks. The only time I‘ve seen it change is with new releases with LOTS of interest...like The Mueller Report when it came out. And yes, the Star Wars books are great on audio, there is something about that musical score and sound effects that are just perfect together. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa John Williams with that score that just keeps giving and working with new films, TV shows, cartoons, audiobooks, anything really and it still translates to the material and transcends. 4y
Jgotham @Riveted_Reader_Melissa ohhh I never thought it might depend on the library 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JHgotham If you use more than 1 online library, that‘s probably it. Hope it helps. 4y

The full-cast narration added to the special effects and this audiobook is an experience...even more so than other Star Wars Books. However, the sound effects can be distracting at times...I often found it difficult to even follow along and I ultimately found the story lacking any real substance because of them.

My favorite of the three from last weekend.
Hearing Dooku's story was super interesting. The natural comparison to make is to Master and Apprentice, about Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, but I think this was quite a bit better. Even in a script form I did not want to put this down. It was compulsively readable and I loved it. Ventress as a frame was also amazing.
Big recommendation for Star Wars fans.

Not so much a book, as an “audio production”, I had high hopes for this, but it didn‘t meet them. I found it hard to keep track of who was who. I don‘t mind jumping around between timelines, but it was a bit too abrupt. Meh 🤷🏼‍♀️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed getting some more Prequel era history. The glimpses into temple life were great. Dooku also seems like slightly less of a jerk than before I read this.

I did find out that I don't like audiobooks with full sound effects and music and such. I was too easily distracted, especially by trying to pick out the different musical themes. It also made it more difficult for me to listen in the car. The performances were quite good though.
