The American Girl
The American Girl: A Novel | Kate Horsley
From a bright new talent comes a riveting psychological thriller about an American exchange student in France involved in a suspicious accident, and the journalist determined to break the story and uncover the dark secrets a small town is hiding. On a quiet summer morning, seventeen-year-old American exchange student Quinn Perkins stumbles out of the woods near the small French town of St. Roch. Barefoot, bloodied, and unable to say what has happened to her, Quinns appearance creates quite a stir, especially since the Blavettesthe French family with whom shes been stayinghave mysteriously disappeared. Now the media, and everyone in the idyllic village, are wondering if the American girl had anything to do with her host familys disappearance. Though she is cynical about the media circus that suddenly forms around the girl, Boston journalist Molly Swift cannot deny she is also drawn to the mystery and travels to St. Roch. She is prepared to do anything to learn the truth, including lying so she can get close to Quinn. But when a shocking discovery turns the town against Quinn and she is arrested for the murders of the Blavette family, she finds an unlikely ally in Molly. As a trial by media ensues, Molly must unravel the disturbing secrets of the towns past in an effort to clear Quinns name, but even she is forced to admit that the American Girl makes a very compelling murder suspect. Is Quinn truly innocent and as much a victim as the Blavettesor is she a cunning, diabolical killer intent on getting away with murder? Told from the alternating perspectives of Molly, as shes drawn inexorably closer to the truth, and Quinns blog entries tracing the events that led to her accident, The American Girl is a deliciously creepy, contemporary, twisting mystery leading to a shocking conclusion.

I found this to be intriguing, sometimes a little creepy even, unpredictable, and definitely a little weird at times. Also, I believe the nearly excellent narration made this somewhat slow-burning mystery overall more palatable. If I had read this instead, I don't think I could've been as engaged with the way the mystery was fed to me by the tiny, tiny spoonful.

This book would make a great Netflix limited series. Page-turner about an American exchange student who emerges from the woods only to be hit by a car and wakes from her coma with no memory of what has happened to her. Then, it‘s discovered that her host family has disappeared. Just the kind of book Lily and I enjoy on a cold winter day.

Definitely creepy - but somewhat predictable with a flat ending. A story about a foreign exchange student who definitely lands with the wrong family.

Bailedbailed

I hate bailing on books - I keep thinking that I might miss something great if I just keep reading, so I don't abandon many. But I just can't go on with this one 😖

Reviewsbylola I have this but am just not drawn to it. 7y
tpixie Good job! It is hard to bail! But time is precious!! 7y
Mdargusch It is always a dilemma for me too, but I agree with @tpixie, too many amazing books and not enough time. 7y
MyNamesParadise I listened to this on audio. It did take a while for the book to get to the point. 7y

I really enjoyed listening to this thriller taking town in small town France! The narrators did a great job capturing the voices of the characters!! I was pleasantly surprised with the twists & turns of events both in the present and flashback storylines. I'm eager to read or listen to the next book of Kate Horsley. As always, more in-depth review on #Goodreads. I like #playaways!

#riotgrams #bookstagram Day 6- #CurrentReads

I'm almost done Chamber of Secrets & will start Prisoner of Azkaban right away. I'm listening to Amy Schumer's book in the car now. Trying to finish The Fifth Letter before its due date & same for Ms Marvel- I've had that laying around for a while. And the playaway with the headphones is The American Girl & I love listening to them when around the house or waiting somewhere or even if I'm eating solo!

I'm settling in with brunch and my first book for #readathon day - The American Girl by Kate Horsley. It's told from alternating perspectives - Quinn, the American Girl, and Molly, the journalist investigating her stay in France and the disappearance of her host family. So far it's a page-turner!

Happy Read-a-Thon day! What is everyone else reading?

I love ALL these books but fun fact, I read The American Girl in one day!! It has all the makings for a perfect thriller and takes place in France - even better. This novel is perfect for fans of What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan and The Girl on The Train by Paula Hawkins! 👍🏼👍🏼

[DELETED] 2232195534 It's on my list already because I enjoyed those very books you mentioned! 8y

Dark & twisty physiological thriller, set in France. I liked the dual narratives of reporter Molly & Quinn, the American exchange student w/ amnesia whose POV is told via her blog posts (past) & video-log (present). The twists & who/what to believe kept me guessing & it's a good summer read. Paired w/ a breakfast of Baguette, topped with Brie and Blueberry-Lavender Chia Seed Jam & French Roast for my blog review + recipe-link to post in comments.

LiteraryinLawrence Beautiful picture and the book sounds interesting! 8y

Did not have it in me to hit the grocery store on my way home tonight so random fresh & frozen veggie bits, leftover rice, & eggs morphed into curried fried rice & dinner on the ottoman with this mystery-thriller set in France. It's drawing me in... 'The American Girl' stumbling out bloodied from the woods and into the media spotlight, just woke up from her coma... Cue suspenseful background music...🙀

thegirlwiththelibrarybag That fried rice looks amazing! Enjoy your evening :) 8y
