Three Women provides an honest look at the sex lives of three American women. While it was interesting at times, I was ultimately disappointed and frustrated with it for several reasons. I expected it to dig deeper, make conclusions (or at least provide some analysis), and feature stories that haven‘t been told before. These women share a lot of similarities and are all manipulated (if not abused) by men. It is more about trauma than desire. ⬇️

The hours invested in thorough research and deep conversations and the observations that come out of both are evident in Taddeo's well-written book that reads like fiction with it's lyrical prose. The book tells the stories of three different women and describes the longings, frustrations, and insecurities that propel them. It is incredibly honest as it tells their stories without holding back and without casting judgment.

The author spent years getting to know three women, and their sexual experiences and desires, and then put it into what can really only be described as a novelization. I read a review in which a woman said that she didn't like that the author didn't draw any conclusions but I think that's what I liked most about it; I was free to draw my own conclusions about how their experiences shaped their needs and desires. *sexually explicit content*

I‘m rereading nearly two years since my first read, this time for book club, and while I may be more aware this time about the limits of this book—the three women are all white, in opposite-sex partnerships, and American—I still found myself engrossed in the narrative force of these women‘s lives—at times, they read like fiction, the sex and love and betrayal, but always with the underlying and even unsettling resonance of recognition.

AmyG I was fascinated by these woman. I agree, at times it read like fiction. 12mo
underground_bks @AmyG I have so little in common with them and yet felt like their lives resonated with me so deeply. 12mo
Reggie I think the feeling of just wanting to be loved, heard, and respected is a universal feeling that even though these women are all white, in each of their different ways, don‘t get all of those. I really liked this book. I hope Lina and Maggie are doing better wherever they are. 12mo

I‘m glad the author‘s note came at the outset; it‘s crucial to realise that this is non fiction although it reads like a novel. It‘s gripping, gossipy, raw and very often uncomfortable reading. The author spent thousands of hours with the three women and this is their account of their desires and invisibility. “In the end it is these three women who are in charge of their narratives. There are many sides to all stories, but this is theirs.”

LeeRHarry I‘m trying to read this for my next month‘s bookgroup - I just can‘t get into it and am going to DNF it. 1y

I last posted four months ago, and in that time I‘ve started 24 books, 22 of which I finished and 2 of which I abandoned. I am going to make four posts to review all 24, and this book stands apart. I need to make special mention of this book; it‘s not the typical type of book I gravitate towards, but it was wonderful and interesting to read.

This nonfic book explores women‘s sexuality, and I highly recommend to women, and also to men. Plz read!!

Reggie I felt so horrible and angry for Lina and Maggie. And though I don‘t think I would want her lifestyle I was happy for Sloan. I especially liked her thoughts about how you can give a man a grocery list and he will always forget one thing. And you could focus on that but sometimes he takes the dog you don‘t have for a walk and he does other stuff. 2y
betsyhaddox @Reggie lol, yes! Yeah, I was pretty happy for her, too, but then I was also disappointed when she didn‘t share what her experience with what‘s-his-fave‘s wife when they talk in the car. She allows resentment for herself to grow, and thinks she‘s doing her duty to the men she‘s with, but it just perpetuates a misunderstanding of the situation. And then all the responsibility is hers, and not the men‘s. Did you think that, too? (edited) 2y
Reggie @betsyhaddox I think the writer was doing everything in her power to make the reader feel sympathy for Sloan but personally I kinda felt like “you knew she didn‘t know” just take the verbal lashes. In a perfect world I think all 4 of them have a discussion at the same time. But at the same time Sloan knew her. She wasn‘t some stranger. And isn‘t that part of girl code. (edited) 2y
Reggie You‘re right though, Sloan took the brunt. When the community talks they won‘t say Wes or the husband is a manwhore they‘ll say Sloan is the slut. Which isn‘t fair. (edited) 2y

This was almost a pan for me, but I feel like there are women, and men, who could probably learn a lot from this book. Personally, I didn't understand how this book could be marketed as a book about a woman's desire when the whole book is about women striving to please men.

I do appreciate what the author was trying to do here, but I feel it missed the mark. The stories of these women, to me, were just heartbreaking.

TrishB I agree, had to bail on it. 2y
Reggie I remember feeling so angry for Maggie and Lina. 2y
Tgbsfk Thats a really good point. I started reading with very different expectations and found something else. I havent finished yet. 1y
mollyrotondo I‘m trying to read this now for book club and I‘m struggling with the same thought that you had. Two of the women experienced traumatic and abusive sexual behavior when they were teenagers so it‘s difficult for me to understand their “desires.” I also agree that all three are trying to please men and are not in control of their own emotions and desire. Maybe by the end that will be the point but I‘m struggling right now. 1y
Addison_Reads @mollyrotondo I had a hard time with this one too. I can't say the end gets any better though. I was angry through most of this read, but I do know a lot of women who sadly, live lives like these three women. My hope is this book lets them feel like they're not alone. That's probably the best "positive" I could take from this. 1y

This book weaved a much more complicated story of three women than I anticipated. The author does a good job of stating upfront what each woman desires. It grabs the your attention and gives the author the ability to piece together a story that is much less sexy and much more heartbreaking and compelling. I'm left with a range of emotions and thoughts that are thought provoking and unsettling about how men and women both desire and interpret sex.

I can‘t help but thinking, was the best theme to focus on a woman‘s “desire” in men? We are defined by more than our relationship with men. For this reason I can‘t get through this book no matter how hard I‘ve tried. Perhaps other‘s have found a strength in reading this that I‘m just struggling to see?

BarbaraBB I felt more or less the same. I felt bored rading this book. The same story over and over again imo 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

#CoronaBreak Book 6. This one was HEAVY. A statement on trauma, for sure, and it definitely gets you thinking about the relationship between a woman‘s sense of worth and her awareness of the male gaze. Maggie‘s chapters literally made my heart hurt, and regardless of content, that‘s an indicator of a well-written piece of nonfiction. Once you start, you won‘t want to put it down.

This book is sold as “the deepest non-fiction portrait of desire ever written”. I find this very misleading. The stories of these women are not about their “desire”. They‘re about the abuse they endure by and for men. I did find their stories interesting, but to generalize this a portrait of an American woman‘s “erotic longing” is both wrong and in fact, insulting. I kept reading this for some illuminating analysis, but there was none.

This burrowed underneath my skin and flayed me. It‘s not, as so many have asserted, about female desire. It is in fact about female invisibility. If it is about desire it‘s not so much sexual desire as the desire to be seen, and believed, and respected, and equal, and empowered. This could never have been written about 3 men, as it‘s still very much a man‘s world. The words go down like butter but come up like bile. A tour de force. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Belletrist July Pick

This book should be a required read among ALL women and men. The stories told opened my eyes to how sex and men can impact a woman and cause her to make the decisions she does. My best friend and I read this together and we both couldn't wait to discuss our takeaways. As you can see, my copy is littered with my thoughts. I will be rereading this again and again for years to come.
