This non-fiction books sets out to explore female sexuality through three case studies. But they are all white and straight and cis, and all their stories are centered on underlying trauma. Valid and interesting viewpoints, but not at all what the book says on the tin. And why must all female desire be associated with trauma??

ElizaMarie I am curious about this one. 1d

“Women shouldn‘t judge one another‘s lives, if we haven‘t been through one another‘s fires.”
I‘ll admit that I feel judged often and I don‘t know why...
#quote #nonfiction

ljuliel Excellent quote. I agree 100%. I don‘t think most people “ get me”, and I‘m often judged without them knowing why I‘ve had to make some of the decisions I‘ve made , and why I stay to myself so much now. I need my space. I like myself whether anyone else does or not. 7d
Sharpeipup @ljuliel Exactly and I feel myself getting quiet these past few days... 7d
ljuliel I think we all go through times like this. Peaks and valleys. We all sorta walk our own paths through life to come out at the end, hopefully where we want to be. As we get older ( I should know about that part), we need to learn to be comfortable and content with ourselves and learn that we aren‘t here to make everyone else happy. We have to find OUR happiness. It‘ll come. Maybe we are both in a valley, possibly getting ready to hit a peak again. 7d
Texreader Great quote. Incredibly true. Good food for thought. I may have to print this quote out and post it at work 7d

This book, y‘all. Three days later and I‘m still thinking on it. It made me equal parts sad, enraged, and uncomfortable. A great look into desire and the ways in which women contort and betray themselves to get what they need from men.

Hi, said Sloane. She has a way of saying hello that is at once inquisitive, judgmental, and a little bit sensual.‘
Huh, what is a warm and spiky hi? How is a greeting 3 feelings rolled into one? This isn‘t the only passage like this. I‘m 40+ pages in and the descriptors either contradict themselves or make little sense.

Three Women | Lisa Taddeo

I could have continued reading the stories of the three women at the heart of Lisa Taddeo's work of investigative journalism for a thousand more pages. The alternating strength and vulnerability that Lina, Sloane, and Maggie each displays at various points in her story is so relatable, so infuriating, so devastating. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Taddeo's intention--to recount the sexual lives of women in America--is interwoven of her growing understanding of what it means to be a woman. Taddeo frames the book with her own mother's experiences, making the source of her own interest clear. ⠀

The three narratives reinforce each other, highlighting new insights about the ways that women alter themselves to continue existing in a world centered on men and their needs. ⬇️
1mo
UnabridgedPod I was heartbroken each time one of the women dared to hope that she had found someone who could love her without her having to alter herself, each time she thought she had connected to another woman whose friendship could withstand the intrusions of men, each time her family let her down. I was rooting for these women on every page. ⬇️ 1mo
UnabridgedPod I was unfuriated by the men who are able to escape punishment despite their abuse, assault, and corruption. If anyone questions the need for the #metoo movement, hand that person this book.⠀

While I noticed the excellence of Taddeo's writing, she is absorbed into the narratives of her subjects except when she chooses to share her own history to highlight or complement their stories. What a stunning, powerful, important work of nonfiction.

I saw this book everywhere! Everyone was reading it, so I decided hey why not. I didn't read the synopsis, so this was not the kind of book I usually read. It was very crude and vulgar. A lot of times it made me feel very uncomfortable. But I felt like the book was just that. Sex, profanity, and crass. I didnt feel an actual story of any kind. I would only rate 3/5 stars.

MelissaSue81 I requested it without reading the synopsis too. I didn‘t really dislike the subject matter, but I found the writing style to be pretentious. 1mo

I‘m in a terrible reading slump right now. I‘m still reading, but everything I read I dislike. With this book I can‘t tell how much of it is slump related and how much is book related. Maggie‘s story hit too close to home. And I decided to call it quits after Taddeo says that Sloane “gave herself an eating disorder.” One does not give oneself a mental illness. Maybe I‘m overreacting, but I found that statement so insensitive.

PerksOfBeingABookworm Maybe I‘ll come back to this book when it doesn‘t feel so raw. But for now, I need to stop reading it. 2mo
Megabooks I really hated this book. I felt her look into these women‘s lives didn‘t sit well with me. 2mo
PerksOfBeingABookworm @Megabooks Yes! I‘m so glad I‘m not the only one who feels weird about it. I thought it would be more academic, but it felt like voyeurism instead. What is it adding to our understanding of women‘s sexual desires? 2mo
Megabooks @PerksOfBeingABookworm Yes! It felt almost creepily titilating and pornographic! 2mo
PerksOfBeingABookworm @Megabooks I agree! I can handle explicit content; but, this felt unnecessarily pornographic. It didn‘t seem to serve a purpose, which is paradoxical, given the point of the book. 2mo

Taddeo functions as both a reporter and a novelist in this riveting read. I couldn‘t put the book down & I found the writing gripping however when I got to the last page I didn‘t feel satisfied or educated. I‘m not sure this book serves any purpose but that‘s not to say Im sorry I read it. I don‘t believe this is an accurate account of WOMEN today although I‘m sad to know it certainly represents some. Pick for the prose & keeping me engaged.

BarbaraBB Well written, I agree with what you say even though it was a so-so for me. 2mo
Cinfhen I can understand why it was only so-so for you @BarbaraBB 2mo
Megabooks It was a pan for me for me because, despite being upfront about being about “women‘s sexuality”, I found it needlessly prurient & titillating in a pain-inducing way especially in regards to the teacher-student relationship. It certainly wasn‘t as representative of women‘s sexuality as the blurb on BOTM claimed, & I felt it was overly emotionally pornographic in regards to the women‘s complicated relationships with partners and their own sexuality. 2mo
See All 18 Comments
Megabooks Phew! That said, I can see how there are a variety of feelings about this. I‘ve thought about a reread because I had such a strong response. We‘ll see. 2mo
Cinfhen I understand you‘re feelings towards this book @Megabooks but I thought the endless descriptive sexual passages were on point with the women‘s stories/emotions/ longings especially in the teacher/student storyline. I felt most strongly towards Maggie and that particular story. 2mo
KarenUK @Cinfhen @megabooks I felt the marketing for this book was really off... but the title fits perfectly. It‘s not a representative sample and doesn‘t draw any conclusions about ‘female desire‘, it‘s simply just three different women‘s stories... probably the three women who ended up being the most open and honest whilst she was researching, and that Taddeo found herself most drawn to. 2mo
TrishB Great review. Three women‘s stories can never be representative. I just didn‘t like the writing or stories enough. 2mo
Prairiegirl_reading @KarenUK I heard that she had a lot of different women at first (I forget the number) and then most backed out. I think that would have been a more representative book. I think it‘s more about how this book was marketed. It seems it was marketed as it was pitched and not how it ended up. 2mo
Cinfhen @Prairiegirl_reading @KarenUK the forward of the book states that she began initially following men, then to women and I think the study had 26 but most dropped out over time but these 3 remained most honest, open & committed to the “project” I thought their stories were interesting but there were a lot of similarities ( all were white, 2 were Catholic, all experienced a sexual trauma early on in life, all seemed to have “daddy issues”) 2mo
Megabooks Cindy, @KarenUK @Prairiegirl_reading I started rereading it, & she didn‘t seem to want to drop the universality of it, even after so many women dropped out. As Cindy pointed out they‘re white, straight, cisgender, mostly Christian women with a lot of similarities. From her intro of talking about her mother, it seemed there were some issues she had an agenda to explore. That‘s fine but be more upfront about it. I was sold one thing & got another. (edited) 2mo
Cinfhen Very true @Megabooks she spent 8 years but in terms of “field findings” and the “exploration” I need to roll my eyes 🙄 2mo
Reggie I liked what Sloan has to say about giving her husband a list of 30 things to get from the store and how he never gets it all right. And how she could be mad about those 5 things he missed but sometimes she comes home and there are things done she doesn‘t ask him to do. (Walking an invisible dog, lol) Sometimes it‘s about perspective. I think there were a lot of takeaways from this book. Glad you liked it. 2mo
Cinfhen It‘s funny @Reggie because from the 3 stories, I found Sloan the less interesting. I couldn‘t relate to her storyline at all. It‘s true that women judge women more harshly. 2mo
Blaire I felt the exact same way. Wished there had been data or some broader take aways, but I also found it totally engaging. It made for a great book club discussion. 2mo
Blaire Also one thing that I learned after reading it is that the author actually organized the group of women in Indiana and was the person the Indiana woman confided in during the affair. So she had a part in sort of creating some of the scenes. 2mo
Cinfhen That‘s so interesting @Blaire and doesn‘t surprise me....I had a feeling she was involved in that woman‘s group. That seems a bit disingenuous NOT mentioning that she was the facilitator 🙄Did most bookclub members like or dislike the book??? 2mo
Blaire @Cinfhen most liked it. Everyone read it...lots of discussion about the way the women viewed themselves, lack of self-determination. Also concerns about author‘s methods, wished within the book she had explained what she‘d done. And concern with repercussions to the women for sharing and for their children. I know Maggie‘s name was real bc of court case, but was unclear what steps if any were taken to anonymize the other two. 2mo
Blaire @Cinfhen also lots of about how it was written like fiction it was easy to forget it was non-fiction...which I think worked as an immersive experience and our book club as a whole was very engaged but also uncomfortable. 2mo

As stated in my last post... reading has been a real challenge for me since my breakup. I've barely turned any pages in months... and that in and of itself is heartbreaking to me. I realized, though, that it's actually a good thing. Reading used to be my escape from my life... now that I'm free and truly happy, I don't need it the way I used to.
Tonight, I read for pleasure... not for escaping pain.

I don‘t get the hype about this book. I feel like I‘ve read it a thousand times before or seen it it real life. And I feel like Taddeo wanted to point out how all women in the end turned out to be victims, which maybe these three are, but it‘a not as if that‘s always the case when women are having sex with other people then their husband or without being married. So the book annoyed me more than I enjoyed it.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It was greatly hyped and touted to be about the exploration of women's sexual desire. Unfortunately, I don't believe it lived up to what the writer intended. The women didn‘t come across as powerful but as victims to the men in their lives. Their stories left me sad and frustrated for them. I felt it was overly explicit which was completely unnecessary and actually took away from the three women's stories.

squirrelbrain I agree with your review too! The ‘50 Shades‘ element just ruined it for me 😬 3mo
BarbaraBB @britt_brooke @TrishB @Megabooks @squirrelbrain All you Guys bailed or panned? My peers! And I just started it... 😳 3mo
TrishB @BarbaraBB will be interested in your review 👍🏻 it‘s certainly eliciting some interesting opinions! 3mo
BarbaraBB @TrishB I guess so. I am really scared now while it seemed a good read for my until now. I love some adultery 😂 3mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB Yeah, the way she went about writing it was less than desirable, IMO. I always want people to like books, but this was one of the worst I finished this summer. 3mo
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB Good luck! 😆 3mo
squirrelbrain Give it a go @BarbaraBB - I think it‘s 50/50 between those who loved it and those who.... didn‘t! 3mo

Three Women is a book that has already been widely discussed in my corner of the internet, so, easily influenced as I am concerning books, I had to read it myself. The first impression is certainly the cover with the fruit 🍎. The books tells the story of three women (huh) and their sexual experiences, which makes it a bit revolutionary. It‘s not fiction but not really non-fiction either. It offers a lot food for thought 💭.

#threewomen #cover

Come-read-with-me @thewallflower0707 I love this cover - it‘s beautiful! 3mo
thewallflower0707 @Come-read-with-me the cover is quite similar to the cover of the book I‘m reading now, Supper Club! Maybe that‘s a new trend. 3mo

This book is not for everyone, it‘s explicit at times, and TW for #metoo stories, but I found it utterly compelling.
It‘s not at all a cross section of women, the 3 women all being white and 20‘s-40‘s, but I found their complete honesty and raw emotions so brave. They expose every flaw, desire, fear and moment of self-loathing. At different times I could identify with each of them, even if overall sadly it was Maggie I could identify with the most.

This book was intense, disturbing and worth reading. But have a nice happy book ready when you are done with this one.

This book was absolutely riveting. I have never read anything like this before, and not sure I ever will. The intimate details that Taddeo wrote about these women were on a grand scale. While each story was good, the story of Maggie broke my heart. That is an important story that we all need to read and that portion alone stands on it‘s own merit.

Heatherfeather NEED to read this 3mo
Abailliekaras We just did this on the podcast (will upload on Monday)! So interesting. 3mo
