Bone Tree
Bone Tree | Greg Iles
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes the second novel in his Natchez Burning trilogy which also includes Natchez Burning and the upcoming Mississippi Blood an epic trilogy of blood and race, family and justice, featuring Southern lawyer Penn Cage.Former prosecutor Penn Cage and his fiancee, reporter and publisher Caitlin Masters, have barely escaped with their lives after being attacked by wealthy businessman Brody Royal and his Double Eagles, a KKK sect with ties to some of Mississippi s most powerful men. But the real danger has only begun as FBI Special Agent John Kaiser warns Penn that Brody wasn t the true leader of the Double Eagles. The puppeteer who actually controls the terrorist group is a man far more fearsome: the chief of the state police s Criminal Investigations Bureau, Forrest Knox. The only way Penn can save his father, Dr. Tom Cage who is fleeing a murder charge as well as corrupt cops bent on killing him is either to make a devil s bargain with Knox or destroy him. While Penn desperately pursues both options, Caitlin uncovers the real story behind a series of unsolved civil rights murders that may hold the key to the Double Eagles downfall. The trail leads her deep into the past, into the black backwaters of the Mississippi River, to a secret killing ground used by slave owners and the Klan for over two hundred years . . . a place of terrifying evil known only as the bone tree. The Bone Tree is an explosive, action-packed thriller full of twisting intrigue and deadly secrets, a tale that explores the conflicts and casualties that result when the darkest truths of American history come to light. It puts us inside the skin of a noble man who has always fought for justice now finally pushed beyond his limits.Just how far will Penn Cage, the hero we thought we knew, go to protect those he loves?"

Natchez has a lot of these historical markers. Down by the river they have one for Richard Wright, the author. Keeping with the Greg Isles theme. I chose to post this one because of Greg Isles‘ book. #LiteraryNatches #sad 😢

Guys... this trilogy is so freaking good. This is book 2. I am a sleep deprived mom with a newborn and a 3 year old and I still have not been able to put these books down. I love the historical piece to this story- Iles makes this story damn near believable as nonfiction. The characters are so well developed- especially the villains. Highly recommend this series. 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for book 2, time to jump in to book 3 and see how it ends.

AmyG I just won the first book from goodreads and can‘t wait to read this trilogy. I have heard such great things. 1y

Second in the Natchez Burning Trilogy and Iles is so concerned with bringing us up to speed in case we've forgotten details of Book 1 (I had) that it takes its time to get going. Once it does it delves even deeper into America's murky past, adding the Kennedy assassination to the mix. A trifle overlong but I'm hooked anyway.

peacegypsy Hi! May I ask a huge favor? Could you please explain if you need to read the Natchez trilogy only, or do you need to read all of the Penn Cage novels? Essentially, is this a three or a five book series? Thank you so much for any insights! 😊 1y
Minervasbutler @peacegypsy I haven't read the first three and didn't notice that I was missing anything. So a trilogy, definitely. 1y

OMG! This man writes like no one I've EVER read before...Penn Cage is fascinating...This book holds the single most catastrophic event of such gargantuan ramifications that every page I've read and turned since this unspeakable event occurred I continuously kept hoping that another character would jump out & shout, JUST KIDDING! In spite of all that this book was .. well... Indescribably outstanding!

This continues the saga of Penn Cage and his attempt to live a quiet life with his little girl since the passing of his wife. Not gonna happen while there is so much dirt to stir in Natchez, MI that has his family's history written all over it. Found out after manhandling it for too long that it is a first edition. Seems odd to me that the hard cover of the book has to mention of title or author. Is this a thing now?

The 2nd part of this trilogy and the drama involving Mayor Cage and his father Dr Cage left me angry and yelling at my book, literally. But yet I still couldn't put it down. It made me pump my fists in relief and then made me tear up. And left me wanting to turn the page before I finished the last one.
