I've tried to read this one before and been unsuccessful, despite enjoying other Dickens books. Hopefully this character list helps me a little, because chapter 1 kind of had a big name dump 😂 I marked out what appeared to be spoilery bits!

What inspired you to pick up Pickwick Papers? I've always wanted to read it ever since I read Little Women as a girl - the March sisters seemed to enjoy it so! I looked it up and realized that PP was ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) first published as an actual book (rather than serially) in 1867. LW was published in 1868, so PP was definitely in vogue at the time!!

Any other first chapter thoughts?

AnneCecilie It‘s Dickens and I tend to like his books and want to read more of him. I quite liked the tone of the first chapter and it left me wanting to read more. 10mo

TheBookHippie It‘s one I‘ve not read I‘m determined to read it I did DNF before. I actually sent an email to the teacher who printed me a Middlemarch character list for a cheat sheet for this one too 😅😂😂😂 holiday weekend but I shall report back!!! So far I‘m just holding my breathe! We can do it!!!! 10mo

Life of Pi | Yann Martel

So technically we have read through Chapter 37, but since that chapter starts Part 2, I don't have as much to say about it (other than wow! Talk about leaping into the action section! 😂) I didn't find this week's reading quite as engaging. It's a LOT about religion, and since I didn't quite agree with all Pi's conclusions, I didn't completely connect. What did you all think? I was also very struck by Pi's father's decision to give them such ⬇

Bookwormjillk The religion talk was a bit much for me too. I thought it was funny when all of his teachers met though. 12mo

willaful I agree with your points. It was really something to be just thrown into the situation after all that build up! Though it looks like the next chapter is more backstory.

I was also kind of bored with the religious sections. Which could mean the rest of the book will be dull, but we'll see.

I think it was relatable how he glommed onto the one thing familiar to him, even with a name he knows, only realizing too late.... 12mo

willaful It did make me laugh, how he ran to the... I forget the title, the Hindu equivalent of a priest? for a Hindu celebration of his having found Christ. 😂 12mo

Suet624 This is a book you really have to finish. It makes reading the book so worthwhile. 12mo

Daisey @TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk @willaful I guess I‘m the odd person be here, but although I don‘t personally agree with some of Pi‘s conclusions, I found his thoughts on the religions fascinating and was thoroughly entertained by the three religious leaders‘ attempts to win him over. 12mo

TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk @willaful @Daisey - I did like the way that Pi was so open to exploring and understanding different religions, and how his beliefs have given him a framework for life. And the scene with the various religious leaders getting all huffy with one another was definitely entertaining haha 12mo
