Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman
Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman | Haruki Murakami
From the bestselling author of Kafka on the Shore and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle comes this superb collection of twenty-four stories that generously expresses Murakamis mastery of the form. From the surreal to the mundane, these stories exhibit his ability to transform the full range of human experience in ways that are instructive, surprising, and relentlessly entertaining. Here are animated crows, a criminal monkey, and an iceman, as well as the dreams that shape us and the things we might wish for. Whether during a chance reunion in Italy, a romantic exile in Greece, a holiday in Hawaii, or in the grip of everyday life, Murakamis characters confront grievous loss, or sexuality, or the glow of a firefly, or the impossible distances between those who ought to be closest of all. From the Trade Paperback edition.

(Taking pictures of glossy library books is hard.) This collection from Haruki Murakami was on my #tbrexplode list for March, and I only meant to flip through it. But after reading "The Year of Spaghetti" he pulled me in. Other favorites include "Birthday Girl," "Crabs," and "Chance Traveler."

I sometimes think that people‘s hearts are like deep wells. Nobody knows what‘s at the bottom. All you can do is imagine by what comes floating to the surface every once in a while.

Anybody have some advice? Bought this used paperback and didn‘t notice until I started reading that the binding is cracked in the middle. The pages are all still held in there but I‘m worried if it keeps falling open where it‘s broken that the pages will fall out eventually. The internet says Elmer‘s glue and pressure will do the trick but I wanted to ask you guys. :)

This man is truly one of my favorite authors. This book was very good, strange in places "normal in others" but his ability to draw you into his stories even his short stories is amazing.

My first Murakami book and for the most part I liked it. Some of the stories were kinda odd but I‘m going to pick up another one of his books.

Darth_Kaders Some of the stories are so weird!!!! I‘m glad you liked it :) 2y

I forgot to rinse out my coffee mug before I put into my bag and it spilled onto my book. 😭

Librarybelle I hate when that happens! 2y
EllanaRose Oh no! Have you considered getting covers for your books? I'm not sure if there are waterproof (or rather coffee proof) ones but they protect the book when you travel 2y
Shvonne @EllanaRose I might consider it now. Thanks! 2y

Here are a few books from the 2000s that I still haven't read. Too many books and so little time! #readjanuary #publishedinthe2000s

Godmotherx5 So many books....My life story. 😉 3y
EvieBee @Godmotherx5 In looking through these realized I have a lot from the 1990s that need reading as well. 🙀 3y
Godmotherx5 Nothing wrong with that. 3y
ApoptyGina69 You're in for some real treats! I've read all of those and they're a big stack of 5 ⭐️fun. 📚 3y

I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but in true HM fashion, I loved this collection. Absurdity, jazz, Japanese culture ✔️✔️✔️ 4.5🌟 #stockphoto

Holy crap if this (minus the piano tuning part) isn't exactly how I felt taking piano lessons. Now, playing the piano is one of the best things I can do to relieve anxiety and stress. #MurakamiGetsMe

Honestly, this sounds pretty close to something my husband would do. He doesn't think Hurricane Matthew will be all that bad. Our apartment is a block away from the intercoastal waters & a mile or two from the ocean in Palm beach county. He's been so nonchalant about it and it kills me. I'm worried I won't be in much contact with him, so he says he'll walk to a pay phone. WHERE ARE THERE PAYPHONES THESE DAYS? AND YOU DONT WALK IN A HURRICANE!😱😡

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just can't! These people always drive me crazy, they are so laid back and I worry enough for the both of us. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage You are correct and he's not. I was living in Boynton during Hurricane Andrew and it was inTENSE. Batteries, flashlights, get your food into coolers, extra ice and water. Are you boarding up windows and all that too? Please keep us posted - as you can. 3y
Cinfhen Stay safe 3y
PenguinInFlight We don't get hurricanes here, but we get epic snowstorms...and my husband is the same way. He's all "It's not that bad" while there is a no travel advisory and visibility is approximately 3'. Drives me CRAZY!! ??? Stay safe!! ❤️❤️❤️ 3y
Scurvygirl He sounds like a typical New Englander! The only ones worried are the meteorologists. The only times I usually see my neighbors is during major weather events. 3y

This is the most Haruki Murakami quote about short stories to ever happen lol. I normally don't like short stories as much as novels, but with HM I'll take anything and everything by him. After the Quake is also a great collection of his #shortstories #somethingforsept

That moment when you're reading a story about a surfer, then you realize it's a ghost story, while the fog rolls in and your house gets dark. 😳 Beautiful writing in this story: Hanalei Bay.

If I'd known Murakami-sensei had a new/old story collection book I would've read it sooner.
