Forgotten Room
Forgotten Room | Karen White
"New York Times "bestselling authors Karen White, Beatriz Williams, and Lauren Willig present a masterful collaboration a rich, multigenerational novel of love and loss that spans half a century.... 1945: When the critically wounded Captain Cooper Ravenal is brought to a private hospital on Manhattan s Upper East Side, young Dr. Kate Schuyler is drawn into a complex mystery that connects three generations of women in her family to a single extraordinary room in a Gilded Age mansion. Who is the woman in Captain Ravenel's portrait miniature who looks so much like Kate? And why is she wearing the ruby pendant handed down to Kate by her mother? In their pursuit of answers, they find themselves drawn into the turbulent stories of Gilded Age Olive Van Alen, driven from riches to rags, who hired out as a servant in the very house her father designed, and Jazz Age Lucy Young, who came from Brooklyn to Manhattan in pursuit of the father she had never known. But are Kate and Cooper ready for the secrets that will be revealed in the Forgotten Room? "The Forgotten Room," set in alternating time periods, is a sumptuous feast of a novel brought to vivid life by three brilliant storytellers."

I found it a little difficult to keep track of the various fathers and mothers at times, but I loved how engrossing this story was. The way the generations kept coming together only to be thwarted made for an epic set of love stories, and I always love a wartime woman doctor. #historicalfiction

Check out the novel summary on Goodreads.com. Love how these three writers pen a story weaving three different generations of women. Beatriz Williams is one of my top 10 fave authors. I‘ll read anything by B. Williams and the collaboration on this novel was creatively designed - I almost had to take notes!

It's discussion time for this month's #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead ! I posted five questions under the Spoiler tag - you can find them either through my feed or by searching for the #LiteraryCrew tag.

I saw a lot of positive thoughts for this book, and I agree! What did you think overall? Upon viewing the discussion questions, is there anything else you wish to discuss about this book?

megnews I really liked the description of the house, especially the room with its stained glass and the hidey hole. I also enjoyed the artwork. I don‘t really understand why Harry changed his name though. 3y
CoffeeNBooks @megnews I agree about the name change. The only thing I thought was that maybe he was so upset by his sister's treatment of him (and maybe also his brother's death), that he didn't want to be associated with the family any more. 3y
CoverToCoverGirl @megnews I think after Olive was lost to him, he wanted to reinvent himself away from his family, thus the name change. 3y
Jerdencon I really liked the house - meant to look up if it was actually a real house. 3y

5. What was your experience reading the novel? Did the alternating chapters hold together seamlessly or did you find the shifts jarring? ~from LitLovers Discussion guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Aims42 I noticed about halfway through that one chapter would end on a word and then the next chapter would start with that word. I thought that was really cool 👍🏻 I did not like that until the last part of the book I was convinced there was some incest happening. I‘ve liked their other books, but this one for that reason made me not a fan 3y
megnews I didn‘t really find the shifts jarring. I usually like books that alternate time periods. But these 3 stories were so interwoven with the characters that I have to say I was getting confused. 3y
megnews @Aims42 I thought the same thing. I was hoping they‘d hurry up and find out about each other before anything occurred and feeling bad for how they‘d feel when they did learn their relationship. It was definitely odd. 3y
See All 14 Comments
Aims42 @megnews YES!!! A couple times I physically cringed and my husband sitting next to me was like, “What? Why are you making that face?” And I was like, “I don‘t know for sure yet....” Odd is the perfect word! 3y
Librarybelle @Aims42 @megnews I was so concerned about the incest possibility too! It was almost a relief when it was discovered otherwise, but definitely odd. I liked the book, but I think they have collaborated on better books. 3y
Aims42 @Librarybelle @megnews I loved, loved, loved “All the Ways We Said Goodbye” and “The Glass Ocean”. I devoured those books and was disappointed this one was a miss for me 3y
Librarybelle @Aims42 I really enjoyed The Glass Ocean too! 3y
CarolineLovesToRead I wished that some of the chapters would continue in the same time frame. Just as I was getting into one storyline it would jump to another but it did not bother me so much halfway thru. I wouldn‘t mind reading their other books. 3y
megnews @Aims42 @CarolineLovesToRead @Librarybelle I wonder if the authors realized it would come across as incest (how could they not?) and if they realized how cringey it would be to readers? 3y
CoverToCoverGirl This was my first book by all of these authors. I will definitely read more by all of them. I thought it was seamlessly done, and beautifully written, but I haven‘t any other point of reference. 3y
Aims42 @megnews @CarolineLovesToRead @Librarybelle Maybe?? Perhaps a copy editor was like, “Um, hold up. We gotta clear this up” 😆 If I hadn‘t read another one of their books I would think twice about reading another by them 3y
CoffeeNBooks I definitely had to take notes as I read to keep track of the different stories- I was also reading two other books with multiple storylines at the same time, so it was a bit crazy keeping track of everything! 🤣 3y
megnews @CoffeeNBooks Harry‘s sister being the aunt by marriage or stepmom by marriage. That was the worst part for me. Couldn‘t keep her straight at all. 3y
Jerdencon I couldn‘t keep up with the Prunella story either but everything else seemed ok to me. 3y

4. As the mystery unraveled itself during the course of the novel, were there any points where you felt you had the answers to the riddles? If so, were your predictions born out...or were you wrong? ~from LitLovers Discussion guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

megnews Not at all. For awhile I was afraid there was going to be incest going on unbeknownst to the characters. 😳 3y
CarolineLovesToRead @megnews I‘m glad I‘m not the only one worried about incest. 😬I found that to be a bit confusing 3y
CoverToCoverGirl I always thought Harry Pratt was going to be a big influence on how things played out, especially because he mysteriously disappeared. I just couldn‘t quite figure it out, but I never once thought it would be an incestuous connection. I should have drawn a family tree at the start, a visual my have helped me to figure it out sooner. 3y
See All 6 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I had some of it figured out, but not that Harry Pratt/Ravenel was the same person. I kept trying to figure out how Harry fit back into the story. 3y
megnews @CoffeeNBooks that was the only part I thought I‘d figured out! I think just because of his art. 3y
Jerdencon Pretty early on I figured Harry was Ravanel- I just didn‘t know how it was going to play out. It was amazing to me how one events has ramifications for generations. 3y

3. A central concern in the novel, is the power of love, whether appropriate or not. Trace the paths of love in this book. Discuss how love has consequences beyond the two people involved and their time. ~from LitLovers Discussion guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

megnews Olive‘s father‘s affair affected his family‘s finances. It ultimately affected olive‘s future, then Lucy‘s life. And continued on. 3y
Librarybelle @megnews That one action seemed to catapult each relationship moving forward! 3y
CoffeeNBooks @megnews Yes, definitely. And Olive leaving Harry affected him and his future family as well. So, many people were affected by one action. 3y

2. Lies and secrets are a major theme in The Forgotten Room: the way they ripple, like a pebble thrown into a pond, through time and across generations. How were the characters affected by the many secrets eventually uncovered in the book. What responsibilities for truth and openness do all of us have to the generations that follow us? ~adapted from LitLovers Discussion guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

megnews I guess it all goes back to Olive‘s father‘s secret. If Olive knew Harry‘s father had reason to be angry with him, she may not have sought revenge and then the story wouldn‘t have unfolded at all. Instead that choice rippled down through generations. I value truth and transparency in family relationships. 3y
Librarybelle @megnews Yes! Agreed! 3y
CarolineLovesToRead This story shows how one secret or lie can change the course of people‘s lives. Secrets are sometimes kept as families fear shame and don‘t realize the ripple effects. 3y
CoffeeNBooks At the time, Olive probably thought she was doing the right thing, but then that secret affected Lucy, and then Kate. Definitely a ripple effect. 3y

1. Of the three entwined stories that make up The Forgetting Room, which character(s) were you most drawn to? Which character's story held your interest more than the others? Or were they all equally compelling? ~from LitLovers discussion guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

megnews My favorite storyline was Olive and Harry. Theirs seemed the most natural to me and possibly the least confusing because it was the farthest back before the characters started intertwining. 3y
Librarybelle @megnews I liked that one the best too! 3y
CoverToCoverGirl For me they were all equally compelling. 3y

CarolineLovesToRead I liked all the stories but liked Olive and Harry‘s the best. It was the beginning of the stories and like @megnews says, the least confusing. I also liked the relationship between Kate and Captain Ravenel 3y
CoffeeNBooks I liked them all, but I liked Olive and Harry's story the best also. I felt like the Lucy and Philip storyline was the weakest of the three. 3y
Jerdencon I agree with @CoffeeNBooks - I liked olive and Harry‘s story best 3y

Wow- this was a really interesting collaboration by three authors, with three storylines that all connected together slowly throughout the book. It tells the story of Olive in the 1890s, Lucy in the 1920s, and Kate in the 1940s. It is a story of friendship, love, and heartbreak. I enjoyed putting the clues together as I read, to see how each woman's story connected to the others.

I have yet to be disappointed with the collaborative writings of White, Williams, and Willig. Sweet, multilayered time period stories, with a dash of mystery and some romance are the perfect escape reads. In this one, a room at the top of a mansion in New York has secrets of a love affair at the end of the 19th century, which affects characters in the 1920s and 1940s. Captivating stories expertly interlocked. #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Historical fiction following 3 generations of women and The Forgotten Room. Sounds like something that I would usually love. This one got a bit confusing for me. I thought about drawing a family tree at one point. Still, I enjoyed the characters and storylines quite a bit. Looking forward to discussion with the #LiteraryCrew later this month.

megnews At a couple points in the novel I thought we might have incest going on and that got a little weird. Looking forward to seeing how other folks dealt with that mystery. 3y

This one has three timelines 1890, 1920 and 1945 and three sets of characters who are linked in some way. Loved the mansion that is also a character in this book. 4⭐️ book 33

Enjoyable light historical fiction and family mystery. The novel follows three generations of women and their connections to an NYC mansion, and to the men that live(d) there. Mild complaints: there's a problematic doctor/patient relationship, and the FatedMates (TM) trope doesn't always work, but I liked this one overall.
