This is the dark story of Jack and Jill. How they were raised by parents that craved perfect appearances over love. How two twin girls were taken away by a bleak and dangerous world. It‘s like reading page after page of smooth dark poetry that sinks into your mind. You cry out for these two girls, hoping for them to find their happiness.

Don‘t know why I waited so long to read the 2nd volume in this series but so glad I finally did. A prequel of sorts, we follow Jack and Jill, twin girls raised by wholly uninterested parents, who find a door, and a staircase, and the way to The Moors, a wonderfully eerie and evocative place where each follows her own path toward very different ends. Really enjoyed this a lot, only wish it had been longer and more fleshed out at the end. 4/5 ⭐️

Jacqueline had found cleverness all on her own, teasing it out of the silences she found herself marooned in, using it to fill the gaps naturally created by a life lived being good, and still, and patient.

aartichapati I was just listening to this one on audiobook! I don‘t love the series as much as I was hoping to (just finished the first one), though. I don‘t feel very emotionally invested in any of the characters. But I do love a good portal fantasy :) 2mo
alisonrose @aartichapati I really enjoyed the first one, but personally I think this one is even better 2mo

Eh. It was OK. Upper range of so so bordering on a pick. I wonder if I would have liked it more if I had read the first book. Though billed as a stand-alone I think I might have liked it more if I had the first book under my belt. There were parts I liked. I have the first book on my kindle so I guess I should read it. My issue with this second book is mainly vampires. So. Tired. Of. Vampires.

Letora Ah, did it explain how everyone had their own world? 2mo
Sace @Letora nope! Definitely need to read that first one. 2mo
Prairiegirl_reading Definitely read the first one! It‘s really good and it‘ll make this one make more sense. 2mo

Prairiegirl_reading Also agreed about vampires. 😕 2mo
Sace @Prairiegirl_reading thanks for the tip! I guess I assumed it would be OK to read since it was supposed to be a stand-alone. It was short and there were moments I really enjoyed. 2mo
Sace @Prairiegirl_reading Vampires were all the rage when my daughter was in high school and I'm kinda not a fan and I generally avoid books with them as characters/plot points. 2mo

I couldn‘t have chosen a more pitch perfect Halloween treat for my ears than this gothic fairy tale. It begs to be read out loud, and the author proves she is a fantastic oral storyteller. Twin sisters Jack and Jill stumble onto a doorway to another world in which they can shed the rigid stereotypes their parents have forced on them and become whoever they want. But sometimes becoming your true self requires a dark and deadly price. 🖤☠️

#RedRoseSeptember Day 10: #WithMyLittleStickOfBlackpoolRock reminded me of this sticks and stones novel of McGuire. Each of the main character in the first novel seems to have their spin-off stories in succeeding books. This 2nd book focuses primarily on twin sisters Jacqueline and Jillian (otherwise known as Jack and Jill), featuring the backstory of how one of them turned out to be a murderous psychopath. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-k6k

arlenefinnigan Plenty of murderous psychopaths in Blackpool 😉 6mo

Here‘s a look at my audiobook library for the #24in48 Hour 12 challenge! I love audiobooks. I mostly get mine from Audible or the public library. I listen to a lot of nonfiction in this format, but I also enjoy fiction—especially SFF. My favourite audiobook is probably Sadie by Courtney Summers. It‘s a full-cast book done so well. I also love the picture book audiobook for We Found a Hat. I don‘t tend to reread audiobooks, though!

This series has been an interesting twisted look at faerie tales and a look at the people who go to these different worlds. Inclusive and interesting this explains a lot about the first book.

Damn it but the Hugo Award Shortlist has led me to a lot of good reads.

They're not brothers, they're sisters, but Jack and Jill have a sufficiently complicated relationship (and bad enough parents) that they can stand in for Data and Lore in today's #startreksummermay

Megabooks Data and Lore definitely have a complex relationship. 🖖🏻🖖🏻 10mo

An interestingly spooky series! I would say I liked this second book even more than the first. I wish both were a little longer! There seems to be so much left unsaid. This one dives into the story behind twin sisters Jack and Jill...what the world behind their door was like once they stepped through it at age 12.
I was close to giving this 5 stars just for the fact that I didn't want to stop being in this book...it kept drawing me back to it.

A quick & easy #audiobook. 🎧 Jack was my favourite character in the first book, so I was pretty wrapped that she was one of the main characters this time around. I LOVED how McGuire touched on childhood & how a child‘s mind & views can be shaped. My only issues are that book feels a little short. It seems to move quite quickly. I also had an issue with the voice used in the audio book, but I‘ll talk about that in the comments. 👇🏻

greenhairdontcare The first book was narrated by Cynthia Hopkins, who did this excellent voice for Jack. Seanan McGuire (the author) narrates the second book & used a very different voice for Jack, one that I would never have imagined. It threw me. I‘m wondering if Jack‘s voice changed once she came out of The Moors? Is it meant to mimic Dr Bleakley‘s? McGuire uses a voice for Dr Bleakley that is very similar to what Hopkins used for Jack, just quieter. 🤔 12mo

First night in Sydney after a long seven hour flight from Singapore. I will only be staying here for a week, but I thought it best to be prepared with this stack of books. After all, I finished one book in the plane (The Naked Woman by Armonia Somers) and halfway through the tagged book. All #WomenReadWomen2019 titles! Since I am staying with a librarian friend and his partner, the bookshelf on the background is pretty much a delight.
