The Summer I Turned Pretty
The Summer I Turned Pretty | Jenny Han
Bellys never been the kind of girl that things happen to. Year after year, shes spent her summers at the beach house with Conrad and Jeremiah. The boys never noticed Belly noticing them. And every summer she hoped it would be different. This time, it was. But the summer Belly turned pretty was the summer that changed everything. For better, and for worse.

It‘s always a beautiful sight seeing my scholars read but when you see them read and eager to share the characters they‘ve fallen in love with or just want to sit and discuss a scene they have just read and can see it clearly in their minds, it‘s a whole different ballpark. #jennyhan #thesummeriturnedpretty #readingroyals

Bklover Pure joy when you set down that book and look around for someone to tell All About It!!!❤️ 1mo
Bookpearl @Bklover Indeed it is!! And she was soo excited to share. 1mo

Love this series by Jenny, and this question is so interesting… but I‘d say all decent days. I would rather find the small joys in daily life than beat to death the amazing things!

I've got to say it, I preferred the tv series ??
I know I'm waaaay out of this book target, but there's something in Han's writing style that don't sit well with me..a few years back I tried "To all the boys.." but I DNFed it (this time I ended the audiobook, so there's an improvement ?)

I loved To All the Boys so I had to pick up this series by Jenny Han. I read it in a few hours by the pool. I love an easy read sometimes. Looking forward to the next one in the series on my next day off at the beach or pool.

August recap in book reviews:

I‘ll be honest, I started reading this book because of the new series out on Amazon and also because it‘s JENNY HAN!

And that‘s where my admiration for this series ends.
Contd in comments ⬇️

Rating: 3/5

i.besteph …Maybe this was geared towards a younger audience but I found the characters very annoying and downright irritating, especially Belly. She‘s the most insecure and selfish character I‘ve ever encountered. My only favorite characters are the moms. They were fun and perhaps the mature ones of the lot. (edited) 3mo

I give this a “meh” as an audiobook. I didn‘t really care for the narrator. Cute story of white privilege with some peppered in tragedy. A mostly feel good summer story. I think I would have enjoyed this more as an actual read and not on audio, not doing that to myself, though.

Book 1 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Adorable! Thoughtful lifelong family friendships. Current day summer house fun with integral childhood memories mixed in. Lovable characters.

Book 2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Still cute. Everyone is maturing and now we get a few chapters from Jeremiah‘s POV.

Book 3 ⭐️⭐️ Meh. Now we get a few chapters from Conrad‘s POV. Not the outcome I expected nor wished for. Felt extremely forced.

Overall a decent summer series. ☀️👙🐚🪸

The book was packed full of loveable characters and amazing writing. Reading it forced me to fall in love with both of the Fisher boys, for very different reasons. The show didn‘t truly depict the energy Jeremiah Fisher gives off and I‘m so glad I read it. If I hadn‘t, I wouldn‘t have gotten to know him and fallen for him.

I watched The Summer I Turned Pretty on Prime last week and it was everything I could ask for in a YA show adaptation. It was so sweet and you fall in love with the boys just like Belly does. You fall in love with Cousins Beach and the friendship between the moms. To continue that joy I bought the full series today. Read book 1 in a sitting. Very cute and an easy read, but Han‘s writing has improved since this first series. 3.75/5

read just in time for the tv adaptation! i think belly is such an annoying protagonist. though i was team cam the entirety of the story, by the end i was indeed team conrad. i think the teen romanticism is well written and cutesy and of course the beach house setting is a main factor in its appeal. good opening to a fun story!

Not my usual type of book at all, but I‘m taking some time to relax from reading the academic journals I tend to (which has cut back on my leisure reading), to enjoy some light books while on vacation. This was surprisingly good. Summer-y and the characters are rather realistic. I‘m actually going to read/listen to the rest in the series.

Eggs I loved this series 💜 5mo
Jess_Franzino @Eggs They‘re so well written! Writing really makes all the difference, not matter what the genre. I unfortunately had to DNF the second one and read the summary because the cancer stuff was too triggering for me since my dad has cancer, but I‘m going to read the 3rd one. 5mo
Eggs Sorry to hear about your dad💔. I understand-I am a cancer survivor 5mo
Jess_Franzino @Eggs Thanks ❤️ He‘s doing well —handling it like a champ, so I have faith in him healing. Still, the second book wasn‘t the best thing for me to be reading while he‘s starting his second round of chemo 😬😬😬 I just didn‘t post it as DNF, since I didn‘t want to lower the rating on a really good book. Glad to hear that you‘re doing better ❤️ 5mo

A very YA summer read but a good one anyway. About to be adapted to one of the streaming services. It was a very quick and short book, the first of a trilogy. And we did get the story in the current timely e as well as past summers, but I found the past timelines being jumbled up not my favorite. It was a little too YA for me but I still enjoyed some moments.

I'm so thankful to be past the angst of being a teenager. Feeling like you have it all figured out when the truth is far from it. The back and forth storytelling made the friendships and relationships between characters very real and you want to celebrate them, scold them, and console them during all the emotions.

Can one summer change your life forever? In this book, Belly proves that it can. As she spends every summer at the Cousins Beach house, she falls more and more in love with Conrad, but his brother Jeremiah and this new boy Cam, get in the way of her chances with him. As we read this book through Belly‘s point of view (first person), we learn that Conrad doesn‘t feel the same about her, or that‘s at least what she thinks.

emilie.embury As the summer goes on, Belly starts spending everyday with her new boy Cam. While back as the beach house, lots is going on that she is unaware of. Susannah, Conrad and Jeremiah‘s mother, has got cancer again and Belly wasn‘t made aware until the end of the summer. This is when her relationship with Conrad becomes what she wished it always would be. 8mo
emilie.embury They are each others comfort person at the end, and as Belly fast forwards to Christmas time in the book, we learn that Conrad has come to visit her and she sneaks out to go be with him.. leaving us with a cliffhanger. 8mo

The summer I turned pretty is a book about a young girl who every summer goes to visit a beach house which is owned by some family friends who she grew up with, this story tells about many adventures and memories that the girl experiences over the years at this beach house as well as the many feelings and thoughts that she has. This book gives a lot of feeling and emotions to it‘s readers and is overall an enjoyable book to read!

Aimee.Corliss I would give this book a 9/10 because it was a very good read and I would recommend it to someone who enjoys a book that has a mixture of emotions and romance involved in their books 9mo

11/27/2020 Since I really enjoyed To All The Boys I Loved Before, I wanted to read more by this author. This novel and the rest of the trilogy really didn‘t captivate me as much as the other series. I finished it out because I needed to know, but I think it really says something when you like the peripheral characters more than the main character.

Now that I have read the entire book I can say that the ending is amazing and sad. We find out that one of the main characters is sick with cancer. This event bring out a lot of emotions in the rest of the characters surround her. This story is written in first person. The theme of this story is family and friends. These two families spend the entire summer together and they classify each other as family. They take care and look out for each other

MissYaremcio Thank you for the review and email Emma! I was just missing a bit of the explanation to the POV and your recommendation! 4/6 2y

I was hoping I'd enjoy this one because To All the Boys was such a fun series. But this one is immature and empty. Belly and her brother spend every summer at a beach house with their mother and her best friend's family. There is a huge emphasis on looks over personality, (hence the title). The two characters that I actually wanted to spend time with are the moms, Susannah and Laurel. Unfortunately, we barely scratch the surface of their lives.

#CoronaBreak Book 11. What a disappointing book. I have the whole series, but for now, I‘m not going to read the second and third books. I LOVED To All The Boys I‘ve Loved Before by the same author, and this book was the opposite: poorly written with flat characters and a dry plot that I had no emotional investment in. I love me some easy YA, but even this one was hard to get through.

I loved this book! It's a perfect light summer read to flip through while tanning! I loved the characters and the summer-love aspect of it! I had gotten the oldest version for 1$ at a booksale and after reading it I just had to buy the trio with the newest covers! Would recommend for a summer vacay or any beach/lake getaway as it puts you into the mood of creating summer memories! Cannot wait to read the next to see where the future takes Belly!
