Dead Water | Ann Cleeves

Dead Water is the fifth book in Ann Cleeves' Shetland series - now a major BBC1 drama starring Douglas Henshall, Shetland. When the body of journalist Jerry Markham is found in a traditional Shetland boat, outside the house of the local public prosecutor, down at the Marina, young Detective Inspector Willow Reeves is drafted in to head up the investigation. Since the death of his fiance, Inspector Jimmy Perez has been out of the loop, but his interest in this new case is stirred and he decides to help the inquiry. Markham - originally a Shetlander but who had made a name for himself in London - had left the islands years before. In his wake, he left a scandal involving a young girl, Evie Watt, who is now engaged to a seaman. He had few friends in Shetland, so why was he back? Willow and Jimmy are led to Sullum Voe, the heart of Shetland's North Sea oil and gas industry. It soon emerges from their investigation that Markham was chasing a story in his final days. One that must have been significant enough to warrant his death . . . Also available in the Shetland series are Raven Black, White Nights, Red Bones, Blue Lightning and Thin Air.

Rereading for #travelbybook #shetland and I just want to give Jimmy Perez a hug, tell him everything will be okay, and make him a cup of tea. 🫖

I started reading this Monday afternoon, and had trouble putting it down. Another excellent installment in this series. I am no good at all at figuring out the killer in any Cleeves novel, which is what I think makes them so compelling for me.

After finishing the last book in this series I immediately ordered the remaining books. This wasn‘t my favorite of the Shetland books and I am wary about the new character we were introduced to. However I always enjoy my time with Perez and end each book wanting more.

I really wanted to give this book 5 ⭐️, but it seemed to drag on a little too long.

Another good Shetland book. I liked the involvement of Rhona Laing and the addition of Willow Reeves to shake up the investigating dynamic. Now waiting about 15 weeks for the next book in the series 😬

Up to 5/10 in this series now and really enjoying it. Liked how the author wrote about Perez in this one after the trauma in the last one. A good read and didn‘t guess the killer!

MicheleinPhilly I‘ve still only read the first. And my wife wants to start watching Vera but I don‘t think she‘ll let me get caught up on all of the books first. 🤪 4y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly I‘ve only read the first in the Vera series, but not seen the show! 4y
MicheleinPhilly Pretty much all we watch now is Acorn and Britbox shows. We abandoned Silent Witness when Amanda Burton left but now we‘re watching The Commander. 4y

Cathythoughts Oh your doing well ! I‘ve been hoping to start #3 for ages.... I havnt guessed the killer in the first 2 ( not a clue , like ! ) ... I love that 👍🏻❤️ 4y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly we don‘t really like the same programmes so struggle watching together! But I did love Amanda Burton in Silent Witness! 4y
TrishB @Cathythoughts I love it too! I was convinced I had them on 95% and turned over.....nope!! 4y
PhyllisH I‘m currently reading this book. Love the series. 3y

Library haul ❤️

Cathythoughts Havnt read any ... but I‘m thinking maybe Cleeves ! & the May writer would be something I‘d like for sure 5y
Tove_Reads @Cathythoughts Only discovered May some months back, but I am totally sold! Cleeves is great, although the pace is a bit different, appropriate for island life, and I‘ve made the mistake of reading a few immediately after some high-paced action thrillers. Going to Croatia soon so wanted to read a bit about it! 5y

This book reminds me of the show Broadchurch. Murder in a small coastal town, female lead detective. It is 72 degrees with a light breeze, I think I will stay in this reading spot by the honeysuckle for awhile.

crazyspine I love Broad Church. 6y

A good book and a glass of champagne 🥂 having a little relax before #datenight #midweekweekend. I‘m a little unsure about continuing with the Shetland series as I didn‘t like the book before Dead Water, but my husband assured me this book is worth it. #shetland

Often by the time an author gets this far into a series things stagnate. Enough changes to keep things fresh but original feel of previous books is still here. Really like new character DI Willow Reeves. My Library doesn't have next one in series. So I bought it and will donate once I've read.

"Perez thought that sounded like something from the Jane Austen novels Fran had enjoyed so much. He'd tried to read them to please her, but they always sent him to sleep, so he'd never found out how they ended."
Oh Jimmy at least you tried. ?

"she's a God-botherer! Another. As if there aren't enough already in this case. Willow's parents had been Buddhists in a vague, undemanding way, and she'd rejected all ideas of the supernatural before leaving school, had become an aggressive atheist. Another form of rebellion." #rebel #willow #shetland

Bk5 in the Shetland series finds DI Jimmy Perez a changed man after the end of Blue Lightning. No longer the quiet, patient detective, he struggles with his anger and being a dad to Cassie. When a journalist comes back to Shetland & is found murdered, the new Inspector, Willow Reeves, expects Jimmy to work on the case with her. But can he pull it together, does he really want to? I enjoyed this, I like that Cleeves portrays grief realistically.4⭐️

Michelle_mck I think you are over your reading slump my dear 👍🏻 7y
minkyb When you have a moment (insert chuckle) please tell me the name if the first title in this series. I always start at the beginning! That you Liz. 7y
Lizpixie @Michelle_mck I think I might be too! I've read a book a day for the last week🤞 @minkyb Raven Black is the first book, it's a fantastic series. Enjoy! 7y

#bookishspring2017 #day6 #bookandtea I'm going with herbal tea tonight,my chamomile, honey & vanilla because I've had too much caffeine today. I used to drink at least 6 cups of coffee a day until a year or so ago when I started having palpitations & anxiety all the time. These days I have 1 coffee, maybe 2 black teas & then it's all herbal tea. At first it's like drinking brewed garden clippings but once you get used to it, it's quite refreshing.

Lindy Your last line made me laugh. Garden clippings for the win! 🌻 7y
Reviewsbylola I drink one coffee a day. Too much makes my anxiety spike too. 7y
Lynnsoprano Only caffeine is iced tea, and at home I'll make decaf iced tea. I have a couple herbal teas I like, but I can't get chamomile past my nose. But anything to avoid the palpitations. 7y

Lizpixie @Lindy my job as a kid was picking up the grass after dad mowed, some teas smell exactly the same! @Reviewsbylola I didn't realise how much I was drinking until I was forced to stop @Lynnsoprano I can't drink straight chamomile either, but I found the ones where it's blended with something else are really nice, like the honey&vanilla here or I have it with spearmint and also with lemon. 7y
Lindy When I worked on a farm in France, I was vehemently assured that no French person would drink camomile because of its vile taste. (I happen to like it.) The calming tea of choice there is linden (tilleul). 7y
LeahBergen I got into drinking more herbal teas by trying a bunch of the fruity ones. I have always been a coffee or black/green tea drinker and herbal tea seemed like coloured water to me. 😂 7y
