Things You Save in a Fire
Things You Save in a Fire | Katherine Center
From the New York Times bestselling author of How to Walk Away comes a stunning new novel about courage, hope, and learning to love against all odds. Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's a total pro at other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to give up her whole life and move to Boston, Cassie suddenly has an emergency of her own. The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the creweven one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the infatuation-inspiring rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can't think about that. Because love is girly, and its not her thing. And dont forget the advice her old captain gave her: Never date firefighters. Cassie can feel her resolve slipping...and it means risking it allthe only job shes ever loved, and the hero shes worked like hell to become. Katherine Center's Things You Save in a Fire is a heartfelt and healing tour-de-force about the strength of vulnerability, the nourishing magic of forgiveness, and the life-changing power of defining courage, at last, for yourself.

A good contemporary novel that‘s a little different than what I‘d normal read, but still enjoyable. I think this would be filed under chick-lit. At times there was too many descriptions and fillers, but the overall story was touching and real.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

marleed I just read a book where the MC travelled on a humanitarian mission, yet the author detailed over and over the appearance and apparel of the secondary characters. It just didn‘t make sense to me! 2d

Realistic, Competitive, Romantic, Funny

The story is accurate with respect to the current day challenges with woman working in a man's world. The topic was handled perfectly, and the story easy to read, kept my attention while feeling this really happened.

I loved Cassie Handwell, every decision she made I could relate to, she deals with discrimination, harassment, family issues, and job stress with poise and at times a sense of humor.

3.5 ⭐️- This much talked about book follows the ups and downs of Cassie Hanwell, a female firefighter who has many personal and professional demons to deal with.

While a bit lighter than I had expected, this is a touching romance that wraps up nicely and handles some interesting issues along the way.

I didn't know what to expect with this one. I checked it out of the library after seeing it everywhere. Unfortunately,I found it too Lifetime Movie-ish. It just wasn't my thing.

A little cliche, a lot predictable, but still a decent feel-good story about family, love, and forgiveness. 2.5⭐️

I expected something entirely different when I started reading this one. What I got was a beautiful book about love, loss, new beginnings, and the importance of forgiveness. Having gone through some rough patches lately, I think I needed to read this. Forgiveness, and letting go of the past, are both major struggles for me 🤷‍♀️
It also has a super happy ending, so there‘s that ♥️😊

I thought this was going to be a woman firefighter falls in love with a coworker sort of book.... but there were so many other themes in this book and I appreciated them - a young person in the role of caregiver, coping with past traumas, family dynamics. It was good! #botm

#TBRtemptation post 5! Cassie is one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, and now her estranged and ailing mother wants to give it up and move to Boston due to an emergency. The new firehouse in Boston isn‘t keen with a woman among them. There is a handsome rookie who doesn‘t mind though, and she may ignore her old captain‘s advice to not date other firefighters. The romance isn‘t center-stage. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

This is the third book I‘ve read by Center and while I can say I enjoyed it, none of them have held a candle to How to Walk Away. This one, set in a fire station, had a fairly predictable premise once you got past the initial setup. Although I sometimes crave a good predictable rom com, I do like a little more build up- when writers make readers work for it, so to speak. Everything here came a little too easily, given what they could have done.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars

This is my second book I‘ve read of Katherine‘s (other being #HowToWalkAway), and I‘ve got to say this is my favorite of the two. Cassie was a character I really enjoyed. Strong in many ways, independent, funny, and someone who needed to heal. The way the writer brought everything together was nearly perfect. The last quarter of the book had many emotions, which is what I look for in a book. My only thing with her books is...

baes ...she doesn‘t give the love interests enough depth and she wraps their stories up quick. They‘re very much secondary characters and the relationships move quick. I like to see a little more from them. (edited) 1mo

I got to see Katherine Center tonight at my local indie bookstore, Midtown Reader. It was so much fun to listen to her speak. She is a NY Times bestselling author with a movie adaptation starring Josh Duhamel in the works, but she was so kind and relatable. Her new book, Things You Save in a Fire, came out last week. I highly recommend it. Giveaway coming up soon, so stay tuned!

I found myself thinking of the writing process while listening to this audiobook. It must be a challenge to create a badass female lead when a budding romance is involved since personal vulnerability is needed, as well. But I think Cassie was as badass as she could be given the restraints of the genre. So yea, it‘s a pick for me.

Flowers from my #BFCr3 walk seemed fitting for this title!
