Thick
Thick: And Other Essays | Tressie McMillan Cottom
Smart, humorous, and strikingly original thoughts on race, beauty, money, and more--by one of today's most intrepid public intellectuals Tressie McMillan Cottom, the writer, professor, and acclaimed author of Lower Ed, now brilliantly shifts gears from running regression analyses on college data to unleashing another identity: a purveyor of wit, wisdom--and of course Black Twitter snark--about all that is right and much that is so very wrong about this thing we call society. In the bestselling tradition of bell hooks and Roxane Gay, McMillan Cottom's freshman collection illuminates a particular trait of her tribe: being thick. In form, and in substance. This bold compendium, likely to find its place on shelves alongside Lindy West, Rebecca Solnit, and Maggie Nelson, dissects everything from beauty to Obama to pumpkin spice lattes. Yet Thick will also fill a void on those very shelves: a modern black American female voice waxing poetic on self and society, serving up a healthy portion of clever prose and southern aphorisms in a style uniquely her own. McMillan Cottom has crafted a black woman's cultural bible, as she mines for meaning in places many of us miss and reveals precisely how--when you're in the thick of it--the political, the social, and the personal are almost always one and the same.

A wonderful series of essays by a black woman about both the suppression of and the power of black women

The author discusses how she is considered smart, but her Grandmother was much smarter in the wrong time for a poor black woman to be smart. She makes a powerful point.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dr. Cottom writes in an intellectual, but accessible manner. Some (very wrong) folks thought this would hinder her, but I wholeheartedly disagree. It‘s what makes this provocative collection so effective.

Congrats to Dr Cottom and all the other authors on the National Book Awards nonfiction longlist! I‘ve found over the past few years that this list matches my taste well. I loved this book and am thrilled to see her work recognized.

Librariana Question! 😁 Do you usually feel that way about all the categories/genres or just Nonfiction? 😊📚💜 The Youth Literature selection looked pretty interesting to me as well. I've yet to look at the Poetry titles. 2mo
Hooked_on_books @Librariana Pretty much, yeah. For the fiction, I‘ve already read five of them, have two more on my shelf, and another on hold from the library! I often see their picks as TBR but especially like the NF list as I find it so relevant. 2mo

Tressie is hands-down brilliant in her analysis of race, gender, and intersectional feminism. She didn‘t just take old popular essays and stack them in this book. She wrote new ones that took into account feedback she had received from the public and opinion leaders.

She is biting and thoughtful at the same time. Great for fans of Roxane Gay. And soooo much better on audio! #audiobook #audible

5/5🌟This collection blew me away! And everyone needs to read this book! Cottom has written a powerful necessary collection. She is witty, and deep. In smart, affecting prose she addresses several subjects about black womenhood, beauty standards, whiteness, and so so much more. The way she combined her personal experiences with academic knowledge was completely engrossing! This book will educate and resonate.

A collection of powerful essays about being a black woman. Cottom is a wonderful thinker and writer, and I flew through this collection in one sitting! Her essay Dying to Be Competent, which is about the loss of her child, was especially hard-hitting, and the way Cottom is able to connect the personal and the political throughout this book is striking.

SW-T Loved her book 🥰 I wanted to slap that nurse and explain how not to treat a patient. So heartbreaking. 4mo

This made me feel seen on so many levels. I love that she writes in a readable way. She was told that she would not make it as an academic because her writing was "too readable" I beg to differ. It takes art and intellect to craft powerful messages in the simplest of terms that are accessible by the general public. I recommend this book for anyone interested in reading about black feminism and/or the black woman's experience in America.

In this phenomenal essay collection, Cottom delves into racism, race, sexism, and the reality of life as a black woman. She informs her essays with both lived experience and her knowledge as a sociologist. I really dig essays and this is one of the best collections I‘ve ever read. Parts of this will scrape your insides raw. Parts of it will make you angry, and some of it will just be maddening. I would like to tell the young women at the college that they completely missed the point. I‘d like to shake some common sense and compassion into the nurse. She had enough trauma without those insensitive comments. A reminder that we need to do better in so many ways. Not preachy, but very thought provoking.
