I absolutely loved this book! It‘s historical fiction focusing on the early days of BBC radio. We get to tag along with protagonist Maisie as she assumes secretarial work for the Talks department, and marvel with her over the wonders of the broadcasts and the people that make them happen. I thoroughly enjoyed my immersion in the story and atmosphere of London in the 1920‘s. The best book I‘ve read this year!

21 #54 I did not care for this book. The main character went from being a sniveling pathetic girl to being a force. It sounds good, huh? But I don‘t feel that the story told how she really developed. I don‘t know...it just felt hollow. And I didn‘t fully buy into it.

And...done! Broadcast history, feminism, fascism, and a little espionage thrown in. Our hero, Maisie has a great character arc as she grows from nobody (in her eyes) to a competent journalist--and a little bit of a spy. The best of the espionage takes place in the third act.

My book club from SoCal invited me to their next meeting via Zoom and I am so excited! I've missed them greatly since moving out of state.

Their pick was "Radio Girls." I found it enjoyable, but it's not moving into my top 10. I'll still give it a 'pick' because it kept me reading and I learned a little something about the early days of radio.

P.S. Happy Easter!

Wonderful piece of historical fiction that contains real people, women's rights, Great Britain, WWI , WWII and the history about an emerging technology (radio).. umm yes please! Solid 4 stars for believable characters, authentic time period struggles, and great history lesson. 🎙🎙🎙🎙

I actually really ended up enjoying this. Slow, slow start- give it 6 chapters, if it wasn‘t a book club book I would‘ve bailed too early. The story ended up being an intriguing picture of the BBC and a woman‘s place in the word in the late 20s. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this 3.75/5.

A fascinating book which picks up the pace as it goes along until you just can‘t put it down. Set in the early days of BBC radio (when they controversially hired women workers and gave them equal pay), it touches on suffrage, espionage, propaganda and love between unequal sexes. Particularly love the real-life character Hilda Matheson, a gay woman who was the Director of Talks and a former MI5 spy. Now I want to read more about her!

What a great historical fiction about the real beginnings of the BBC radio broadcast. Full of real facts and actual people who worked there! Tying in perfectly with the wonderful fictional character of Maisie, it was a perfect seamless combination of fact and fiction. I loved following Maisie as she worked her way through the BBC and all the issues women faces during those changing times.

Congratulations @Librarybelle on reaching 50k w and 1k followers!!! And thank you for the #giveaway #50k1k

The book that I am super excited about on my TBR list is Radio Girls. This book is set in London 1926 and tells about a woman, Maisie, and her time working for the BBC radio program. The radio program was still pretty new so how exciting that would be to see how the effects of their programming effected the nation!

Finished book 1 of my #LRC. This book was great! I didn‘t know Hilda Matheson was a real person, but she seems like she was a fabulous woman in the 20s. She did so much for the BBC and making sure people were educated and aware of what was going on. This story was a great mix of fact and fiction, but I didn‘t know which was which! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I loved the time period and learning all about the BBC and Hilda Matheson. It was so infuriating how all the women were treated and props to Stratford for making their struggles real and relatable to her readers. However, I didn't love the writing and I found the pace of the book a bit slow.

I loved the time period and historical detail but the writing bogs down the story, especially the mundane description and chatter. I found the author's notes to be a more direct and readable style, so I suspect this is her first novel. I also noticed overuse and incorrect use of words like "copacetic" and "atavistic." I'd like to read the actual journal of Hilda, who is a real person.
