The Story of Alice
The Story of Alice | Robert Douglas-Fairhurst
Drawing on numerous unpublished sources, the author examines the peculiar friendship between Oxford mathematician Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, the child for whom he invented the Alice stories, and analyzes how this relationship stirred Carroll's imagination and influenced the creation of Wonderland.

Finally finished this very well researched and thorough look at the conception and influence of Alice, the book, as well as Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, the girl who inspired the book. I‘ve read a biography of Carroll before, but this was better. It put both the book and the people involved into context of what was happening around them. It also shows how themes and language from the book caught on and influenced so many creative works ⬇️

Centique Really well done but this is definitely for the super fans ( 🙋🏻‍♀️) and those who enjoy literary critiques as it‘s much deeper than a straight biography. I appreciated that Fairhurst leaves the reader to make up their own minds about things that are impossible to know for certain but doesn‘t refrain from pointing out the inconsistencies in Carroll‘s behaviour. 3w

My love for Alice Liddell continues on! I did so much research when I played her at Dickens Fair that she, and Reverend Dodgson's story, have become a very important part of my life. Reading all this research, far more then I did, that Douglas-Fairhurst has done warms my heart and curious mind.

My bookclub chose this as the monthly pick. Very different to my usual genre but that's the reason I joined a bookclub!❤️
