The Moon is Down
The Moon is Down | John Steinbeck
Originally published at the zenith of Nazi Germany's power, Steinbeck's fable THE MOON IS DOWN explores the effects of invasion on both the conquered and the conquerors. Occupied by enemy troops, a small, peaceable town comes face-to-face with evil imposed from the outside and betrayal from within the close-knit community. As he delves into the motivations and emotions of the enemy, Steinbeck uncovers profound and often unsettling truths both about war and human nature.

This is genius. It was used during WWII as propaganda. Which is amazing since it was accepted and translated and distributed all over occupied Europe despite being largely panned as unrealistic in the US.

I apparently have read so much Steinbeck that I'm dipping into more obscure titles. #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

This is another great Steinbeck short story. When a town is occupied by a larger and stronger force, the true heroes rise up. I enjoyed the brisk pace and the characters. Mayor Orden and the Doctor and Molly are very likable. I even liked Colonel Lanser.

I found this awesome early edition through Amazon. The back dust jacket cover has an appeal to send your copy to the USO!

A co-worker mentioned this Steinback novella to me a few weeks back and I was intrigued. It reads like a play (so very quickly). I worked my way thru East of Eden in high school, but it‘s nice to be reminded that Steinbeck can be fun! This pro-democracy WWII propaganda is essential reading (especially in today‘s current political climate). Democracy is so precious!!

Steinbeck wrote this pro- democracy propaganda tail “ at the zenith of Nazi Germany‘s power” and wow! It still packs a punch! No wonder mere possession of this book in Nazi occupied Italy was punishable by death. Powerful stuff @HardcoverHearts this is right up your alley! #24in48 @24in48 I‘m ready for something breezy and light next!!

This is a Steinbeck WWII short novel in which an unnamed invading force (Nazis) occupies a small mining town in an unnamed country (Netherlands). As the occupying army starts tightening the noose and establishing a totalitarian regime over the peaceful, hard-working citizens the plot turns dark and events go from being uneasy to ugly and sad. The winter setting adds to the cold and dark tone. A really good but gloomy tale.

Sace @suvata the schedule for this has been perfect. I was still on vacation for the longer Tortilla Flats and the shorter ones are doable even at the chaotic beginning of the year. And having a week to read even short ones is very helpful. Thank you! 7y

britt_brooke I haven't started this one. I have too many distractions right now to read in a timely schedule, unfortunately. I think it's safe to count me out for now. 😣 7y

⁉️ Steinbeck himself was very patriotic. It was fully his intention to write a piece of helpful propaganda for the war effort. Do you think he achieved that goal?

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

RealBooks4ever Yes, but there was controversy when first published. Some thought Steinbeck gave too much sympathy to the invaders. 7y
Scurvygirl Definitely, I can see the problem this would have caused when published. The story did focus generally on the conquerors but in the end there is hope. 7y
suvata @RealBooks4ever I can see where that would be disturbing, especially during wartime. 7y
See All 7 Comments
suvata @Scurvygirl I agree, in the end the towns people got their revenge. 7y
Sace @RealBooks4ever I don't know if I've thought about it enough to articulate it properly, but my reading of the invaders was that the lower ranking officers had been fed lies about the war and when things went south they suffered. Maybe Steinbeck was making an object lesson out of them. Men going to war should remember that war is hell. It doesn't matter if you're on the "good" side or the "bad" side... 7y
Sace Cont'd... there's always another side and they won't like you. So be prepared and don't fall for propaganda like these guys. (Ugh. I'm not making sense.) 7y
suvata @RestlessFickleBookSlut I think I know what you're trying to say. And I believe that the lower ranking soldiers had no idea what they were getting into. So, in a way they were lied to. 7y

⁉️ Chapter 7: The little blue parachutes that were dropped for the townspeople contained dynamite and a small piece of chocolate. Why the piece of chocolate?

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

RealBooks4ever So that even children would search for the blue parachute? 7y
Scurvygirl They wanted the kids to go out and collect the dynamite. If the adults did the soldiers would end up shooting them. 7y

⁉️ Chapter 6: Discuss the scene where Lieutenant Tonder pays a surprise visit to Molly Morden. Molly believes he is trying to seduce her but Tonder insists that he's only looking for companionship. Could it be possible that he is a well-meaning man who is just a victim of circumstance? Did you enjoy the cliffhanger ending of this chapter?

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

Scurvygirl Tonder is very confused, he has been stalking Molly for awhile and when she turns the tables on him asking for food for favors, this is extremely upsetting to him. When he returns Molly is ready for him and he meets an unsettling end... 7y
Scurvygirl I think he might be mentally ill at this point, depression has set in. Well-meaning to start but the army has turned him into a victim. He just wants to go home. 7y
suvata @Scurvygirl I think he's very homesick. He misses "the ladies". He's hungry for female companionship. That whole chapter bothered me. 7y

⁉️ Chapter 5: The occupation does not seem to be going as well as planned. The coal miners are not working to their full capacity and the invading soldiers are getting homesick and restless. Do you have any sympathy for the plight of these soldiers?

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

RealBooks4ever No sympathy here - they knew what they were signing up for. Unless they had no say in joining the military. 7y
suvata I know what you're saying but I kind of felt that Steinbeck wanted us to have some level of sympathy for them. Of course, the townspeople were victims but Steinbeck went out of his way to show that the soldiers were victims too. It's like he was trying to say that they both were "casualties of war". 7y
DarcysBookBlog On some level I feel sympathy for them, even though they were the invaders. But I can't say I was fully sympathetic. 7y
Scurvygirl Nope, even if these soldiers are forced to join against their will, death is still an option. Running is an option. 7y

⁉️ By Chapter 3 you can see that the people are building up hatred toward their occupiers. They haven't rebelled yet but there is clearly some deep animosity. Discuss the different ways someone might react if this happened in their town today.

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

DarcysBookBlog I feel like many people would react how these townspeople have reacted so far. 7y
suvata I think that some would cooperate with the occupying troops in hopes of gaining favor with them. Some would fight back and others would just run and hide. There are probably hundreds of reactions. I would hope that everyone would want to stand up for freedom. 7y
Scurvygirl In Rhode Island, they would probably roll over and be walked on. 7y

⁉️ Steinbeck gets the title of this book from Shakespeare‘s Macbeth. In that play, Macbeth runs into Banquo and his son while he is on his way to murder Duncan. Banquo asks his son, “How goes the night, boy?” to which his son replies, “The moon is down; I have not heard the clock.” What do you suppose that means?

⁉️ Originally, Steinbeck set this novel in a mid-sized American town. Publishers quickly rejected it on the grounds that it would be bad for American morale. Remember, this was in 1942 just months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In his final revision, he does not include the name of the country in which the story takes place. How does this anonymous setting impact the storyline for you?

Embarrassing confession story: I went to Michigan this week to visit family, including some cousins who came in from both coasts. We were at dinner and one cousin mentions that he just read The Moon Is Down. I pipe up, "Is that a children's book?" Because he does have two very young kids. "No, it's John Steinbeck." "Oh," I reply, as I inconspicuously try to slide under the table. ?
