Of Mice and Men | John Steinbeck

Saturday 📖 reading. This is my first Steinbeck novel. Surprisingly none of his work was required reading for me in school.

Sace I look forward to hearing what you think. I did the #steinbeckshortsreadalong this summer and I'm hooked on him now. 7y
trazo @RestlessFickleBookSlut was this summer your first time reading him too? 7y
Sace @trazo I read Grapes of Wrath in high school and all I remembered was that I liked it. I wanted to get back to Steinbeck, but wasn't feeling up to a long novel so the read along was perfect timing. 7y

Kalalalatja Great edition! 7y
trazo @RestlessFickleBookSlut that's awesome! Grapes of Wrath is on my TBR. 🍇 my colleagues have brought up this novel various times in conversation, I want to get the references. 7y
trazo @Kalalalatja thank you. I found it in a book rummage sale for a dollar 😁 7y

Pickpick

Really late on this #SteinbeckShortsReadalong but life intervened... Cannery Row is a snapshot of the down-and-out living along the Monterey waterfront in early 20th century. We see how each person deals with what life has given them, according to their mindset. Lots to contemplate!

Sace He's amazing, isn't he? Thank you for the link. That was interesting. 7y
UwannaPublishme @RestlessFickleBookSlut He sure is! I'd love to read his biography. We may have to start a Steinbeck fan club. 😁 7y
Sace @UwannaPublishme I'd join! 7y

Recap: Tough month = Heavy on comics & fantasy
-Why I March, the picture book, will be my #Nonfiction2017 book for Aug. because I didn't finish any other non-fiction books.😱

- I did finish up my Potter re-read (I still need to pick up those 3 mini ebooks released earlier this year), stayed caught up on my #LOTRChapterADay, & managed at least half of the #SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

Future Note: Find more comics by women

Overall: Mischief Managed!

Gezemice Very nice! Looks good to me. Mine was way slower - tons of craziness in life. 7y
Andrew65 Brilliant 🙌👏 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Andrew65 Wow! It‘s hard to believe it was a year ago already that I started my Middle Earth odyssey! 6y
Andrew65 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds like it‘s been a great journey. 6y

Pickpick

Now, that's what I call one well-read book! I hope everyone enjoyed our #SteinbeckShortsReadAlong. I sure did! Thanks to everyone who participated. It was fun reading all the thoughtful comments about these timeless novels.

UwannaPublishme Thanks so much for setting this up and for your thought-provoking discussions. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻You have inspired me to become a big fan of Steinbeck's profound work. 7y
suvata @UwannaPublishme I wasn't a huge fan of his either until I read the six short novels. Now, I'd have to say he's one of my top five favorite authors. 7y
UwannaPublishme I think I know my next Steinbeck read. 🤓📗Two bookish friends recommended 7y

The Pearl | John Steinbeck
post image

⁉️ Do you think The Pearl is a commentary on "the American dream"? How so?

#SteinbeckShortsReadAlong

UwannaPublishme Yes! The American Dream is defined as: If you work hard, you can have a better life, whatever that means for you--wealth, success, status, loving relations, following your passion. I think Steinbeck is telling us there's no quick, easy way to get there without consequences and hard work. 7y
suvata @UwannaPublishme Absolutely. The American dream doesn't just happen. You have to work for it. But, everyone has a shot at it. 7y
UwannaPublishme 😊👍🏻 7y
Sace Hmmm. I got a completely different idea. The American Dream is only for a few and they control who can have it. Kino was honest and worked hard, but he wasn't part of the powered class. They pulled all the strings. They tried to rob him of the product of his work. And he ended up paying the price for their greed. 7y
