A sharply honest and moving debut perfect for fans of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Ask the Passengers.Riley Cavanaugh is many things: Punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy, and others as a girl. But Riley isn't exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in ber-conservative Orange County, the pressuremedia and otherwiseis building up in Riley's life.On the advice of a therapist, Riley starts an anonymous blog to vent those pent-up feelings and tell the truth of what it's really like to be a gender fluid teenager. But just as Riley's starting to settle in at schooleven developing feelings for a mysterious outcastthe blog goes viral, and an unnamed commenter discovers Riley's real identity, threatening exposure. And Riley must make a choice: walk away from what the blog has createda lifeline, new friends, a cause to believe inor stand up, come out, and risk everything. From debut author Jeff Garvin comes a powerful and uplifting portrait of a modern teen struggling with high school, relationships, and what it means to be a person.

NEW POST: ONE OR THE OTHER
OCTOBER 1, 6:55 AM
The first thing you‘re going to want to know about me is: Am I a boy, or am I a girl?

I stop typing and stare at the cursor, which flashes at me incessantly, as if mocking my inability to write one stupid post.

This was truly a unique and beautiful read. It was very interesting reading from a gender fluid character‘s perspective. I would strongly recommend reading this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Symptoms of Being Human is one of the first Young Adult books to address gender fluidity and gender identity, so it has been duly recognised as groundbreaking via a number of awards, including being a finalist in the Lambda Literary Award and ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults.

I thought this was going to be a great read, really educate myself on what it means to be gender fluid. It was very difficult to understand, to relate. I was so confused. With my current eye issues, I figured I would rather spend my time reading books I enjoy and can follow along with rather than drag myself through a book I can‘t understand. Maybe I‘ll try again when my eye issues have been resolved.

I appreciate the effort the author put into researching genderfluidity and lgbt issues, but the actual plot and characters come off as framing devices for a novel length essay. Points for trying but I think there's plenty of room for better representation of genderfluidity in contemporary fiction.

Riley... neither a girl or boy creates an anonymous blog for the LGBT+ community in hopes of others relating to his/her (Riley‘s ) stories. Riley undergoes challenges while transferring to a new school and her/his father is the mayor. While it took Riley a long while to come out the closet it she/he stands down and helps others online going through the same situation. In the end this influences her/him to come out. Symptoms of being human.

I feel like lots of the story was predictable, until it wasn‘t. It was realistic but not; I highly doubt Riley‘s outing would have resulted in more people coming out at school, but really, we‘re still following the Traumatize Your Queers trope? And is the author queer himself or is this another book by cis het people telling the rest of us how to Queer Better?

However, I am taking a significant leap: I‘m Kris and my pronouns are they/them.

kgriffith Is this a new move toward your authentic self, Kris?? Congratulations and thank you so much for sharing it with us, what an honor! 💜🥰🙌🏻 5y
bookishkai @kgriffith It‘s an acknowledgement that while I can‘t pass as anything but female, I‘ve always felt sort of meh about my gender. About a year ago I started researching and reading, and I‘ve been wanting to “go public” but I‘m too chicken to say anything on other social media. So you guys are the lucky winners! 5y
kgriffith @bookishkris Super proud of you for taking the leap, very courageous! 😊 5y
bookishkai @kgriffith thanks 🙂 this may be the only place I ever come out, but that‘s okay. *I* know, and that‘s what‘s most important. It really won‘t impact my public presentation much because I‘ve always swung from butch to casual femme (I was a wannabe baby butch through most of my time at MHC, but other than my hair I wasn‘t androgynous enough to successfully pull it off). 5y

Loved it! I liked how it‘s never revealed what gender Riley is assigned at birth, because it‘s not what‘s important. This book tackles real-life problems we have today, and it does it well. One small thing I disliked, was that some foreshadowing was very obvious.

LIKES: 1) the answer to what lies between Riley‘s legs... perfect. 2) great characters, everyone feels like a complete person even though we only see into Riley‘s head. 3) the ending is only the beginning DISLIKES: 1) all the advice is good, no mistakes on that were made by Riley which felt unreal 2) gender IS fluid, but very binary, never mix and match. #gender #lgbtqia+ #represent #ya4life

This book. 💕 Rylie‘s story begins with the question: boy or girl. The answer: both. As a gender fluid teen, Rylie is desperate to fit in or, better yet, go unnoticed. When that doesn‘t happen, it is a struggle to keep everything bottled up inside. I loved this story—it is funny, real, heartbreaking, and even though I don‘t identify with Rylie‘s gender identity, I identified with Rylie‘s human experience.

I liked the story. I always like reading stories about gender fluid people, because it gives me a little more perspective about what that‘s like. I just don‘t feel like I liked it nearly enough to give it a higher rating, but I thought it was pretty good.

GondorGirl I really enjoyed this one. I found Riley to be believable and really appreciated how the relationship between them and their parents changed over the course of the book. I also appreciated that Riley's biological gender was never openly revealed. 6y

So I almost didn't read/finish this one. It is for teenagers and reads that way often especially in the beginning but I wanted to read this first book I've found with a genderfluid character and I'm so glad I did.

It's hard and its...impactful. I cried a lot as I read. The why will probably keep me thinking for a while. I do recommend it even if you're not a teen, but definitely if you're genderfluid of any age.

TFW your boss comes in waving an awesome new YA book about gender fluidity and says "I just read this in a day! Want to borrow it?" Cheers for working in a school that values being a safe space, and for authors who write about all of life's diverse experiences.

Riley starts off scared. Starting a new school and obviously not fitting in. But through out the book she gets more and more brave, from starting her anonymous blog to speaking in front of an entire room full of people. This book was inspiring, it encourages you to be your self even if people don't accept you for you. Definitely one to remember ✊🏻 #books #booknerd

It's good. It's intriguing. And yet, gender fluid? Is this just a new trend? I don't really care what a person's gender expression is, but why don't you ever see gender fluid people in their fifties or sixties? I feel like I'm an enemy of gender issues but I really don't yet get it. If there are any gender fluid grandparents out there, you're needed to come out. #gender #genderidentity #audiobook

ValerieAndBooks Maybe because nowadays most coming-outs happens when one is still young? But, yes, it does seem like not many gender-fluid older people are portrayed in fiction (yet). I can't think of any examples. 7y
Soubhiville There's a great TV series called Trans Parent... I think it's on HBO. It's about a seriously dysfunctional family, with a dad I'd guess in his 60's coming out as trans. I love it. 7y
RebL NPR just posted an article about how young people today are rejecting the binary. (I haven't read it.) Perhaps there may be space for that exploration now that didn't exist in our youth. 7y
See All 6 Comments
saguarosally @ValerieAndBooks I'll take reality or fiction. I know sexual orientation and gender identity are different, but it's definitely not uncommon to find gay adults aged 21 or aged 61. It's less common to see older transgendered people, but at least Janet Mock and Laverne Cox are in their thirties. 7y
saguarosally @Soubhiville Could be quite interesting. Hey, Caitlyn Jenner was 65, come to think of it. 7y
saguarosally @RebL Sounds like I need to find that article. In my youth, being gender fluid or transgendered would have been extremely dangerous. It's not perfect now but it has to be better. 7y

Interesting novel about a gender fluid teen who is struggling to get through high school while dealing with the rigid and binary gender roles and expectations of most people. Through Riley's blog posts and experiences, the reader becomes well-informed about this specific character's experience as a gender fluid person. The story itself could have been better, but overall a good story.

I read this for book club. Between a pick and so-so. I think it was well-written, but I would rather read a book by someone who is genderfluid. It's probably a good introduction for people to different terminologies, but it follows some of the same tropes cis people use when writing non-cis stories. Definitely a good representation of teenagers. Also, I had to keep in mind that this is a YA book.

Read this book in anticipation of hearing the author and meeting him for Tucson Festival of Books. This was an eye opening story about a gender fluid teenager struggling with being a teen and not being accepted for who they are. I loved the characters, they were all so realistic and wonderful. I loved how the author never mentioned the gender the main character was assigned at birth either. The entire book was so effective and touching. Love!

Riley is a sixteen year old teenager who has identified them self as gender fluid and is encouraged to start an anonymous blog.

I cannot seem to find the right words to review this but this book explores an important issue and after reading this I do feel more educated about what it means to be gender fluid but I just wasn't a fan of the writing style and I didn't feel really attached to the characters and their problems.

This book is one of the best LGBTQ books currently out. Gender fluidity is rarely talked about and this book portrays it so well. It also has an amazing plot. One of my favorite parts of the mechanics of the book is that Riley always referred to as "they" and think that's genius because if the author had said what gender they were born as, the audience would see them as a boy or girl, rather than an androgynous person. I highly recommend this book
