Not sure how I feel about this one. On the one hand, I thought the writing was lovely. I‘ve focused on #pridereads this month and was pleased to read a story about queer South Asian folks. On the other, Lucky (the narrator) was the only fully formed character, except maybe the mother. I wasn‘t feeling the romances, didn‘t understand what motivated the characters, and found several plot points (see: runaway sister) superfluous. 3/5

Pickpick

This book was so evocative. Dennis-Benn describes so many sides of Jamaica in such detail. I felt like I could hear the ocean and taste the food and see the people. It was definitely hard to read in (many) places, but it felt honest. This was a fabulous #ownvoices debut AND it‘s one of my favorite #pridereads this year 💛💚💚💜❤️🧡

I'm not quite sure where I stand on this one. It's an intriguing read that flips between a young, Muslim, gay university student in Baghdad who is struggling with pressure from his family to settle down with a wife. And an older, married sheik that the young man turns to for help. The author does a great job painting the stark realities that face so many people like me in countries stricter than mine. #lgbtq #lgbtqaa #pride #pridereads #pridemonth
