Amy & Roger's Epic Detour
Amy & Roger's Epic Detour | Morgan Matson
Amy Curry is having a terrible year. Her mother has decided to move all the way across the country and needs Amy to drive their car from California to the East Coast. There's just one problem: since the death of her father, Amy hasn't been able to get behind the wheel of a car. Enter Roger, the son of an old family friend, who turns out to be unexpectedly cute and dealing with some baggage of his own. Meeting new people and coming to terms with her father's death were not part of Amy's plans for the road trip. But then neither was driving on the Loneliest Road in America, seeing the Colorado Mountains, visiting diners, dingy motels and Graceland. But as they drive, and she grows closer to Roger, Amy finds that the people you least expected are the ones you need the most - and that sometimes you have to get lost in order to find your way home.

I‘m a sucker for a road trip story.

What state do I choose for #ReadtheUSA2020? The state it started in, finished in, or one between I haven‘t read yet? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Who doesn‘t want to read about a cross country road trip between two strangers? Along the way, both of them deal with things that are holding them back from moving on with their lives. And of course there might be a little romance involved 😊 This was a very cute, fun read and books like this are what usually get me out of a reading slump.

Amy has to make it from California to Connecticut, but after a traumatic accident she doesn‘t drive. She finds herself road tripping with a boy she barely knows. I really loved the pacing of the novel. It balances serious issues with funny bits and keeps things moving. There are receipts, playlists, scrapbook notes & photos mixed into each chapter. Perfect for a road trip!

The unique style in which this book was written was great. I loved discovering along with Amy & Roger all the places they traveled. Meeting friends along the way. I was glad for the personal growth and discoveries they made in their travels too. The song lyrics as titles was also great I loved when they finally made sense in each chapter.

Amy is not dealing with her father‘s death. Roger isn‘t facing up to the fact that his girlfriend dumped him. Together they are taking a detour and just might find destination “happily ever after”. Quiet and emotional.

For my next #summerlovinbookchallenge #tbrandbeyond pick I got “travel.” This book was recommended and I love the addition of the playlists the characters are listening to as they drive. This is one of my favorite songs back when I was really in to pop punk music. So glad to see it in the book!

#iwanttoholdyourhand #heyjune In this book, Amy & Roger are brought together by the need to get across the country. They are not looking to take a detour in any way, each having their own issues to deal with. But as is often the case, “the best discoveries always happened to the people who weren‘t looking for them.” So before they reach their destination, they may end up #hopelesslydevotedtoyou #JuneItsElectrifying

This book is a must read. I read it a while back and absolutely loved it. I know this book starts at the beginning of summer, but I think it's a perfect read for the end of summer and early fall.

A re-read for me. I enjoyed this one, obviously. It was one I picked up and had never heard of the book or author, so it was a nice surprise. Good story telling, good dealing with grief. I was annoyed with the mom, but when I put myself in her place, it makes me feel sorta panicky...so believable, even if I didn't like the character.

-- Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

It's my 12th year wedding anniversary today, so the husband and I went on a day trip. We got up early to go to the Prairie. We got there before the sunrise, so we hiked up to peak and watched the sun rise. It was absolutely perfect. Such a peaceful moment to share with my best friend.

Traveling is one of my favorite things to do!! Someday, I want to travel the world seeing everything I can and writing about my experiences. I am actually going on a trip very soon, and I'm excited for that new adventure!
Amy & Roger's Epic Detour is a book about two people who take an epic road trip across the country. It's the ultimate traveling novel!!
Q: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would go to London!

Magic_of_stories There are so many places I'd love to go but New York and Paris are one of the top ones!❤ 3y

And Oh my gosh I just loved Roger and Amy‘s friendship! They were a bit awkward at first because, you know, they have not seen each other since they were little kids. But then they were fantastic together as friend, and they really understood each other! Their friendship is friendship goals! I am telling you!

I love road trip books (and movies). There was really no way I wouldn't like this. There were a couple moments that took me out of the book but mostly I was absorbed. I read it way to fast. I wish i could made it last a bit longer.. but that's okay. It was good while it lasted.

I've also never read Gas, Food, Lodging which is talked about in the book. So, I need to find it.

#roadtrip #roadnovels

Vexingcircumstance Apparently Food, Gas and Lodging, the book talked about in the book, isn't a real book. That's disappointing. 3y

Okay I have met plenty of people who are not from the South east of the United States. I have never met anyone who didn't know what sweet tea was. Do people really make sweet ice tea by mixing in the sugar after it's served? And even if they do it really can't be that confusing of a thing for the sugar to be dissolved when the tea is still hot. This description of sweet tea just annoys me. #seriouslycomeon #itsnotmagic

tpixie I'm from Kansas. Sweet Tea is never made here. Except just recently it is at McDonalds - within the last 5 years. The only way to sweeten tea is to put sugar in it afterwards. You have to go to 'the South' to get sweet tea. (edited) 3y
tpixie I know how it's made. But I could see how someone might not, since No one makes it here I could see if you're from the South you'd go ' duh'. 3y
Vexingcircumstance I mean I have met lots of people not from the South, though. I even have family not from here and have literally never heard anyone be confused by sweet tea. @tpixie 3y
tpixie Yes, we'd never call it sweet tea. We call it sweetened tea- when u add sugar afterwards. Regional things are interesting! 3y
Vexingcircumstance @tpixie well apparently everyone I've met has read a lot of southern fiction or something because no one has ever called it that to me or around me. Not even when I visited my best friend in Chicago. I mean, southern themed places in cities even serve sweet tea cold and already with sugar dissolved in it. 3y

What kind of Twilight Zone Chik-Fil-A did they go to? Chick-Fil-A doesn't have spicy fries. Has the author never been to the east coast and got Bojangles and Chik-Fil-A mixed up?

That seriously took me right out of the story. And I was really absorbed then all of sudden..."wtf do you mean you shared an order of spicy fries? Chik-Fil-A has waffle cut plain fries. They do not have spicy fries!!!" #getshitright #thisiswhywecanthavenicethings

Cinfhen 🙌🏻preach😊 3y

gatogirl5 I stopped at a Wendy's while on a road trip once and they had mashed potatoes and macaroni & cheese on the menu. I was all out of sorts. Like, where the hell am I?! Wendy's doesn't have those things!? 3y
Vexingcircumstance @gatogirl5 lol that would throw me off too. Maybe some Chil-Fil-A in other states do have spicy fries. I've just never seen any that do.... 3y

I don't normally like romance novels but this isn't a typical romance. I loved every page of this book as it follows an adventurous road trip. It was my first Morgan Matson book and I have purchased more since reading this book. It even includes lists of songs for the perfect road trip. This book made me really happy 💜

This is a fantastic little summer read! It contains excellent travel writing, as well as genuine emotion and character development. Amy is the perfect travel companion for the reader, but then of course I love her - she's a neurotic theatre nerd! She felt like a very real girl, and reminded me a lot of myself. Even (especially) the supporting characters felt distinctive and lovable. I definitely recommend it!
