Don't Look Now: Stories | Daphne Du Maurier, Patrick McGrath
12 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
An NYRB Original Daphne du Maurier wrote some of the most compelling and creepy novels of the twentieth century. In books like Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and Jamaica Inn she transformed the small dramas of everyday lifelove, grief, jealousyinto the stuff of nightmares. Less known, though no less powerful, are her short stories, in which she gave free rein to her imagination in narratives of unflagging suspense. Patrick McGraths revelatory new selection of du Mauriers stories shows her at her most chilling and most psychologically astute: a dead child reappears in the alleyways of Venice; routine eye surgery reveals the beast within to a meek housewife; nature revolts against mans abuse by turning a benign species into an annihilating force; a dalliance with a beautiful stranger offers something more dangerous than a broken heart. McGrath draws on the whole of du Mauriers long career and includes surprising discoveries together with famous stories like The Birds. Dont Look Now is a perfect introduction to a peerless storyteller.

The black cats do not care that today‘s #chillingphotochallenge theme is Orange. Nonetheless, here‘s an orange book that I hope to get to this month.

Don't Look Now: Stories | Daphne Du Maurier, Patrick McGrath

Read "Don't Look Now." It is about a husband and wife who vacation to Venice after the death of their daughter. Their goal is to try to recover from her death. While there they meet a set of twin sisters, one of which is psychic. Upon their meeting, a story unfolds, blending the supernatural, murder, and Hitchcockian suspense. Highly reccommended.

"The Birds" is quite different than the movie and focuses on a farmer and his family being attacked by kamikaze birds. Unlike the movie, the story gives more insight into why the birds are attacking, although a conclusion is never given. One theory is their behavior is blamed on an extreme cold snap that hit overnight. One character blames the horror on Russian experiments.

The work is fairly intense and will get one's adrenaline pumping.

Sunday morning with homemade muffins and my creepy October read (The Birds is in this collection and I‘m excited to read the original, knowing she wasn‘t happy with Hitchcock‘s version).

tpixie I didn‘t realize that she wrote the birds! 2y

#17booklove #setinabelovedlocation Venice, Savannah and New Orleans are my favourite cities. I've been to Venice 6 times at least and it gets better with every visit, my husband prefers Nice or Barcelona but Venice is magical. When I first visited the US we went to both Savannah and NO, last year we just made NO and it's still amazing. Next visit we'll get back to Savannah ❤️📚

Bookladylinda I have lived in Georgia for several years and just went to Savannah last year, I loved it and can't wait to go back! 3y
DeborahSmall @Bookladylinda we are moving to US in 2019, hopefully to Georgia x I love Atlanta too. We always start off in Atlanta 3y

LauraBeth @DeborahSmall I'm an Atlanta native - let me know if you need any advice about moving here 😀 would be happy to help 3y
DeborahSmall @LauraBeth Thank you! My husband has a few friends from his uni days in Alabama that moved to Atlanta. He gets so many job offers in coaching soccer as he has a pro licence and can teach too. Where we move will be based on the most attractive job offer. We will probably start looking at areas next Year and I'll need all the help I can get ! 3y
Laura317 I adore Savannah. It's probably my favorite US city. 3y
howjessreads Venice is on my bucket list!! And I've never been to Savannah or New Orléans either! #westernUSproblems 3y
