Don't Look Now: Stories | Daphne Du Maurier, Patrick McGrath
19 posts | 11 read | 12 to read
An NYRB Original Daphne du Maurier wrote some of the most compelling and creepy novels of the twentieth century. In books like Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and Jamaica Inn she transformed the small dramas of everyday lifelove, grief, jealousyinto the stuff of nightmares. Less known, though no less powerful, are her short stories, in which she gave free rein to her imagination in narratives of unflagging suspense. Patrick McGraths revelatory new selection of du Mauriers stories shows her at her most chilling and most psychologically astute: a dead child reappears in the alleyways of Venice; routine eye surgery reveals the beast within to a meek housewife; nature revolts against mans abuse by turning a benign species into an annihilating force; a dalliance with a beautiful stranger offers something more dangerous than a broken heart. McGrath draws on the whole of du Mauriers long career and includes surprising discoveries together with famous stories like The Birds. Dont Look Now is a perfect introduction to a peerless storyteller.

Waiting for my mom to call. Figured I might as well kick off the seasonal reading early 😉😱👻

vivastory I'm looking forward to your thoughts! I *loved* this one. There are several stories that I still think about 3mo
BarbaraBB Loved this one too! 3mo
quietjenn @vivastory @BarbaraBB Hooray! I've really been looking forward to it. 3mo

quietjenn @vivastory Part of why I wanted to read it is that I remember reading some du Maurier short stories in high school and there were a few that I still remember and think about, including Don't Look Now. Of course, my recollection wasn't entirely accurate, as it turns out, but still - quite the impact! 3mo
vivastory I think I will read a few of my favorites from this one soon. Don't Look Now & The Birds are as good as Shirley Jackson's stories IMO 3mo
BarbaraBB @vivastory Maybe even better! 3mo

Mehso-so

This collection of short stories included The Birds, which I had never read (also have never seen the movie) so I picked it up for #AuthoraMonth. Despite loving Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel, these shorts just didn't really do much for me. While there was some atmospheric writing, I was never surprised by anything that happened. Several of the stories just stop without any resolution, or with a conclusion that just felt odd & abrupt. In general ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I'm not really a short story fan & this collection didn't really change my mind.

However, this did carry me over my page goal for #MarvellousMarch - I ended up with 2062 pages for the readathon (my goal was 2000)!! As always, thanks for hosting @Andrew65 !!!
8mo
Soubhiville Nice page count! That‘s awesome! 8mo
vlwelser You should watch the movie. It was one of my favorites as a kid. 8mo

TheAromaofBooks @Soubhiville - Thank you!!! I also have a question - do individual short stories “count“ for #AuthoraMonth, or would this book just be considered one “count“ since they are bound together? 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @vlwelser - It's one of those I've always meant to watch but just never seem to get to. I'm not very good at scary stuff, so that's part of the reason 😂 8mo
vlwelser I don't think it's especially scary. Though it may explain my sister's fear of birds. 8mo
Soubhiville I‘ve always gone by one point per book, or per review... it‘s entirely honor system though, I ask everyone in the final post each month for their total for that month. 8mo
Soubhiville This cover is creepy as heck! 8mo
Andrew65 I struggle with short stories. 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @Soubhiville - Thank you for clarifying, and I totally agree on the cover!!! I didn't even notice until I had been reading this book for a day, which kind of made it creepier 😂 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - So far the only author I've found whose short stories I really enjoy is PG Wodehouse! 😁 8mo

#BookReport - Finished two of my chapter-a-day books, plus Mansfield Park will be finished today (!!!). Still plugging through Peter Pan (not particularly enjoying it tbh) & am also reading some short stories by Daphne du Maurier with mixed results. A solid reading week - sitting at 1775/2000pgs for my #MarvellousMarch goal so feeling pretty confident about hitting that goal by the end of tomorrow!!

Somehow have now read 13 #BookSpinBingo books ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) but no bingo!!! 😂

@Cinfhen @Andrew65
8mo
Cinfhen Ha!!! You can‘t score a bingo xx I‘ve had months like that too!! Much better to read what your heart wants & not what the board dictates 💚 8mo
Laughterhp I never get bingos! So I gave up doing the bingo portion 😂 8mo

TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen @Laughterhp - Theoretically my board is comprised of the 25 books I would like to read that month so I “should“ clear the board each month - it's just amazing how easy it is to wander off into the great unknown instead 😂 8mo
Cinfhen YUP!! 8mo
Andrew65 Brilliant progress 👏👏👏🙌🙌 8mo

I found the book on bookshop.org - I've been so pleasantly surprised at how many books they have available & their prices are very comparable to other sources (i.e. Amazon). Anyway, hope you enjoy!! Don't Look Now: Stories | Daphne Du Maurier, Patrick McGrath

Read "Don't Look Now." It is about a husband and wife who vacation to Venice after the death of their daughter. Their goal is to try to recover from her death. While there they meet a set of twin sisters, one of which is psychic. Upon their meeting, a story unfolds, blending the supernatural, murder, and Hitchcockian suspense. Highly reccommended.

"The Birds" is quite different than the movie and focuses on a farmer and his family being attacked by kamikaze birds. Unlike the movie, the story gives more insight into why the birds are attacking, although a conclusion is never given. One theory is their behavior is blamed on an extreme cold snap that hit overnight. One character blames the horror on Russian experiments.

The work is fairly intense and will get one's adrenaline pumping.

#17booklove #setinabelovedlocation Venice, Savannah and New Orleans are my favourite cities. I've been to Venice 6 times at least and it gets better with every visit, my husband prefers Nice or Barcelona but Venice is magical. When I first visited the US we went to both Savannah and NO, last year we just made NO and it's still amazing. Next visit we'll get back to Savannah ❤️📚

Bookladylinda I have lived in Georgia for several years and just went to Savannah last year, I loved it and can't wait to go back! 5y
DeborahSmall @Bookladylinda we are moving to US in 2019, hopefully to Georgia x I love Atlanta too. We always start off in Atlanta 5y

LauraBeth @DeborahSmall I'm an Atlanta native - let me know if you need any advice about moving here 😀 would be happy to help 5y
DeborahSmall @LauraBeth Thank you! My husband has a few friends from his uni days in Alabama that moved to Atlanta. He gets so many job offers in coaching soccer as he has a pro licence and can teach too. Where we move will be based on the most attractive job offer. We will probably start looking at areas next Year and I'll need all the help I can get ! 5y
Laura317 I adore Savannah. It's probably my favorite US city. 5y
howjessicareads Venice is on my bucket list!! And I've never been to Savannah or New Orléans either! #westernUSproblems 5y
