The Redbreast
The Redbreast | Jo Nesbo
An elegant and complex thriller.Harrowingly beautiful. New York Times Book Review A hugely impressive achievementambitious in scope, and skilled in execution. Los Angeles Times The Redbreast certainly ranks with the best of current American crime fiction. Washington Post No disrespect meant to Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson, but Jo Nesb, the New York Times bestselling author of The Snowman, is the most exciting Scandinavian thriller writer in the crime fiction business. The Redbreast is a fabulous introduction to Nesbs tough-as-nails series protagonist, Oslo police detective Harry Hole. A brilliant and epic novel, breathtaking in its scope and designwinner of The Glass Key for best Nordic crime novel and selected as the best Norwegian crime novel ever written by members of Norways book clubsThe Redbreast is a chilling tale of murder and betrayal that ranges from the battlefields of World War Two to the streets of modern-day Oslo. Follow Hole as he races to stop a killer and disarm a ticking time-bomb from his nations shadowy past. Vogue magazine says that nobody can delve into the dark, twisted mind of a murderer better than a Scandinavian thriller writerand nobody does it better than Jo Nesb! James Patterson fans should also take note.

My first Harry Hole mystery, but not my first Jo Nesbo book. Nesbo creates a multilayered story - switching from present day murders to Norwegian soldiers fighting for the Nazis at the Eastern Front. One can quickly identify the name of the murderer but his/her actual identity isn‘t revealed until the end. I was slightly disappointed with one plot element that was left dangling at the end, but overall a very good read. 4.0/5.0⭐️ #2019

This was my first Jo Nesbø crime thriller. I went in with few expectations and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it! Harry Hole is a deeply flawed but likable character, and I‘m glad I started with this instead of the 1st two in the series (which I may go back and read someday). It was extremely well-written and fast-paced.

I decided to read the next in the series for my last #pop18 regular prompt #heist.

#pop18 #nordicnoir

gradcat I love the series! I feel like he lost it a little bit when he left Harry Hole behind...I haven‘t enjoyed his last two at all. 11mo
4thhouseontheleft @gradcat I‘m really liking it too! I just picked up one of the last Harry Hole books at a used book shop, and 2 more at the library. 😃 This might be a binge series for me. 11mo
gradcat I and my mother both enjoyed the series very much...I began with the first one published in English, then had to wait for the rest. I highly recommend following the Norwegian publishing order, as they are very much continuations of the last, especially the latter four or five books. 11mo
4thhouseontheleft @gradcat I am definitely following the Norwegian publishing order, with the exception that I started with the 3rd. I heard that the first two weren‘t very strong, but I may go back and read them at a later point. But 3️⃣ onwards I plan on reading in order. 11mo
gradcat @4thhouseontheleft I agree about the first two books; however, at some point the reader begins to wonder why Harry was in Australia & Thailand, and what in heaven‘s name happened to him there, lol.... 11mo

Strong start, good finish, pity it flagged so much in the middle. Almost there. Rating: 3./5

This was amazing. Told in two different story lines, chapters of a WWII Norwegian past interspersed with the then 2000 present, this Harry Hole novel is definitely where, for me, Jo Nesbo the writer has arrived. This was so intricate. Harry is dealing with neo-Nazis and you don't really know who the real threat is. But this book, I'm still shocked. I'm totally invested in Harry now. Onto the next!!!!

Reviewsbylola I haven't read this one but I have another Nesbit on my TBR right now. 2y
mrozzz Is Nesbø awesome or is he awesome? ? I can't wait to read more of his novels. Harry Hole or otherwise. 2y
Reggie You should definitely read this one @Reviewsbylola. It's soooo good. @mrozzz I'm reading them in order and the first one was kinda iffy for me, but this one........ just WOW. 2y

Ms_T I haven't read a Jo Nesbo book. Is there a standalone you'd recommend? 2y
Reggie @Ms_T I've only read the first 3 in this series by him, but I think this one could be a stand alone. Things that happen in the previous books are mentioned minimally and have no bearing on what happens in this one. 2y
Ms_T @Reggie Thanks 👍🏻I've just seen this by him actually, and it sounds pretty good so I might give it a go! 2y

Made a Nordic noir shelf. I decided to let go my Lars Keplers. I have so many other good Nordic thrillers not read yet and his style of writing was good but I feel like it wasn't Nesbø/Ohlsson/Adler-Ohlsen/Hjorth&Rosenfeldt -good. I think I'm going back to Keplers at some point but now doesn't feel like the right time.

As luck would have it, July is one of the months I set aside to catch up on one of the many series I'm working on. So I'm all set for #slaythatseries 🙂. I started The Redbreast today; I hope to get through it, Nemesis, & The Devil's Star over the weekend; and I'll just keep going until the rest are done📚📚📚

hyacinth Ohh that top red book is so gorgeous 2y
DGRachel I think Redbreast is the last one I read. I'm behind on this series, too. 2y

This was a more dense story than the first two Hole books, but still very enjoyable. Loving the development of Hole's character as the books go on. Can't wait to read the next one in this series! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The third Harry Hole book involving neo-Nazis. Engaging murder thriller, fast paced and suspenseful. A lot of back story to get through but has a major payoff. Also the ending leaves the door open for an exciting follow up. 7/10

#AprilBookShowers #day7 #WomenInTranslation The whole ScandiNoir genre is full of women, it must be the long summer days and even longer winter nights that fuels such twisted imaginings. Which I love! Karin Fossum, Camilla Lackberg, Anne Holt & Yrsa Sigurdardottir just to name a few more.

JazzFeathers That's quite a stunnung cover. Love the mood and the colours 3y

Loved this book!!! So much better than the first book I read by Jo Nesbø, The Bat. This one was addictive. The history element combining with the case at hand made this police procedural complex & intriguing. I am officially sucked into Harry Hole's world & am going to continue to read this series until I am all caught up!

Omg. 3 weeks of not posting?! My reading is not strong lately ? Stress from work and grad school is throwing me off my reading game. Hoping to finish The Redbreast this weekend & start something new. Loving Jo Nesbø & Harry Hole. Now I'm wishing I had all of these books on my TBR shelf so that I can stay in Harry's world forever ?

The first Harry Hole book I read is actually the third in the series. The main character is gruff and the right kind of world weary. The WW 2 set side story is incredible.
