The Maze at Windermere
The Maze at Windermere: A Novel | Gregory Blake Smith
14 posts | 9 read | 30 to read
A richly layered novel of love, ambition, and duplicity, set against the storied seascape of Newport, Rhode Island A reckless wager between a tennis pro with a fading career and a drunken party guestthe stakes are an antique motorcycle and an heiresss diamond necklacelaunches a narrative odyssey that braids together three centuries of aspiration and adversity. A witty and urbane bachelor of the Gilded Age embarks on a high-risk scheme to marry into a fortune; a young writer soon to make his mark turns himself to his craft with harrowing social consequences; an aristocratic British officer during the American Revolution carries on a courtship that leads to murder; and, in Newports earliest days, a tragically orphaned Quaker girl imagines a way forward for herself and the slave girl she has inherited. In The Maze at Windermere Gregory Blake Smith weaves these intersecting worlds into a brilliant tapestry, charting a voyage across the ages into the maze of the human heart.

Different stories based around the same house wind together. I love historical fiction that doesn‘t tie itself to one timeline.

It took me forever to read this - it was 5 separate stories set in 5 different times, all connected in Newport. I‘ll rate this a low pick, mostly because I only liked 2 characters throughout the whole book. #ReadingUSA2019 #RhodeIsland

squirrelbrain Hhhmm, I need a book for Rhode Island, but you‘ve not convinced me to try this one! 🤪 5y

A very cleverly constructed novel set in Newport, RI with five narratives from different times. It begins in 2011, then cycles through chapters set in 1896, 1861, 1776, and 1692. Each story features a protagonist using deception (or self deception) in pursuit of a relationship with an individual from a different class. Each timeline is well-researched and written in a different style, weaving in obvoius links to the others. But for me it lacked ♥.

Now, this was brilliant. Five different story arcs over the course of five centuries in Newport, Rhode Island. The stories blend historical fact and fiction, all the while referencing and echoing each other, intersecting, then veering away from each other, just like, well...a maze.

BarbaraBB Sounds great! Stacked. 5y
mklong @BarbaraBB It really is. It was on the TOB long list, but missed the cut for the short list. I would have loved seeing the TOB discussion of it. BTW, the brackets are out this week!! 5y
BarbaraBB @mklong Oh wow, really? I didn‘t know! 5y
Pamwurtzler Definitely stacked!! I love Newport. 5y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

This appealed because of the cover. It also suggested a Cloud Atlas experience. This is not Mitchell but it is an interesting read.

We explore Newport in five periods; during it's beginnings as a Quaker outpost and revisit it as a major seaport during the revolution and then a summer resort of the gilded age before bouncing back to 2011.

I enjoyed the historical aspects but it did collapse under the weight of what it set out to do.

Really excited for this annotated copy of The Maze At Windermere. It‘s set in Newport, Rhode Island, which is one of my favorite places in the US. I‘m incredibly excited to get lost in a book set over centuries in one of those historic mansions on the water. Also, you can‘t go wrong with a Beautiful Ruins comparison.

This novel is quite a twisty, time-wimey spiral of a tale. The narratives (yes, plural, there are five all told) ran together for me in the beginning and Were confusing. Ultimately, I didn‘t feel that they were all particularly resolved in the end. And, frankly, after juggling the narratives, didn‘t feel all that invested anyway. The characters themselves felt less well-developed than I wanted and I didn‘t empathize with any of them. #netgalley

Well, it worked out to have three books going to kick off the year. So, here‘s the next three! Windermere fiction on kindle; Water Knife on audiobook; and Future hardback non-fiction. This time, I think I‘ll end up with several fiction before I finish the other two 😜

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have two of those on my list, and The Future on my shelf waiting! 6y
