Rose, Ella, Marta and Carla. In another life we might all have been friends together. This was Birchwood. For fans of The Diary of Anne Frank and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. As fourteen-year-old Ella begins her first day at work she steps into a world of silks, seams, scissors, pins, hems and trimmings. She is a dressmaker, but this is no ordinary sewing workshop. Hers are no ordinary clients. Ella has joined the seamstresses of Birkenau-Auschwitz, as readers may recognise it. Every dress she makes could mean the difference between life and death. And this place is all about survival. Ella seeks refuge from this reality, and from haunting memories, in her work and in the world of fashion and fabrics. She is faced with painful decisions about how far she is prepared to go to survive. Is her love of clothes and creativity nothing more than collaboration with her captors, or is it a means of staying alive? Will she fight for herself alone, or will she trust the importance of an ever-deepening friendship with Rose? One thing weaves through the colours of couture gowns and camp mud - a red ribbon, given to Ella as a symbol of hope.

Heartbreak and hope. Gripped me from the beginning. I had to finish tonight to know what happened to Ella and Rose.

Fascinating and engaging story of two teenage girls at Auschwitz. It doesn't go into detail on the horrors that happened there as it's intended for a YA audience but instead focuses the dressmaking studio and the contrast between the lives of the guards and the prisoners. It's a story of hope, friendship and survival and asks how far would you go to stay alive. I didn't feel the emotion I thought I would but still a worthwhile read.

@MinDea LOL! Well, Moo matches just her back, but shares her affinity for the ribbon 😉 (his brother, Rufus, looks more like her in the face. I'll share a picture of him soon and show you.

Broke my own WWII ban to read this as I won it in order to review.
First off, I think it's YA, though I can't find anything to confirm this. It's set in a concentration camp and is a story of survival and hope. These stories never fail to make me despair that people ever sanctioned this against others 😢
I will do a more in-depth review for Readers First.

Balibee146 Why the WWII ban? #noseyparker 7y
TrishB @Balibee146 😀 just read so many of them in a short space of time as they seemed to be everywhere. It's not that I don't like them or they weren't good books but I just felt I'd done too many! I will go back to them of course. 7y
Balibee146 @TrishB i know what you mean I have so many books set in WWII or WWI! 7y
LeahBergen I like your #MatchingBookmark (let's start a new hashtag 😆). 7y

booklvr39 So true! That is happening in right now where I live in St Louis. It's sad my husband is a medic, and had to go to work armed last night. We're all beautiful people, why can't everyone see that and get along? 7y
TrishB @booklvr39 that's awful 😔 7y
