The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, second edition
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, second edition | Robert Louis Stevenson
36 posts | 138 read | 24 to read
First published in 1886 as a "shilling shocker," Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde takes the basic struggle between good and evil and adds to the mix bourgeois respectability, urban violence, and class conflict. The result is a tale that has taken on the force of myth in the popular imagination. This Broadview edition provides a fascinating selection of contextual material, including contemporary reviews of the novel, Stevenson's essay "A Chapter on Dreams," and excerpts from the 1887 stage version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Also included are historical documents on criminality and degeneracy, the "Jack the Ripper" murders, and London in the 1880s. New to this second edition are an updated critical introduction and, in the appendices, writings on Victorian psychology by Thomas Carlyle, Richard Krafft-Ebing, and Henry Maudsley, among others.

I spend my time in #Scotland with these two fellas. It was interesting, even though I did not get to see anything of Scotland as suspected.

Well written, disturbing and dark about the battle between good and bad. I quite enjoyed this one, especially the last part when we got the explanation. But it must have been more shocking back then when the twist wasn't so well known!

Leniverse I read this completely believing it was set in London! 6y
hilded Oh it completely was @Leniverse! Hence why I didn't get to see much of Scotland 😂 But for this challenge we could also choose books based on where the author came from, that was my criteria this time. 6y
Leniverse Oh, right. 😂 I thought I had lost my mind or memory there for a moment. If you wanted to see Scotland and read R. L. Stevenson, Kidnapped would be the way to go. 6y
hilded You're memory is intact 😂 Thanks for the tip @Leniverse, I'll look into that one. 6y

Back in the Midwest and finished this short audiobook. Obvi, you probably know the “twist” - unlike readers in 1886 - but even so, this tale is engaging and creepy but also with lots to ponder about human nature. Martin Jarvis‘ narration was also quite good.

A classic I had never read before....and it was not only very good, but definitely held up. The concepts of virtue versus vice battling in man‘s soul, and what dangers lie in feeding one more, are just as relevant today.

Henrik_Madsen I really enjoyed it as well - but it must have been special reading it without knowing the double-identity thing. 6y
JazzFeathers I read it years ago. First Stevenson l've ever read. Loved it. Fell in love with Stevenson 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Henrik_Madsen Yes, the shock of that reveal originally must have made it extra special...now we all go into it knowing the spoiler ahead of time, which really is a shame. 6y

In Madison for the day, then off to Portland, Oregon for a couple days. A trip to Powell‘s is definitely on the menu.

Started this audiobook for the drive up.

My sister‘s cat Jenga doesn‘t have an evil “Mr. Hyde” side to her, but she can be a bit sassy!

There's many themes in this book... the supernatural, freedom, good and evil, and identity being a few. People say a lot of things can happen in just a few pages... and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is no exception. A lot happens in just a short 62 pages.

Still recovering from the convention weekend but I managed to read this book every day thanks to the app.

The true story of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde!
📍 Royal Mile, #Edinburgh, The Deacon Brodie Pub
It feels like there was an execution at every corner in Edinburgh. I have to say that the Writers Museum was a bit disappointing and sadly I won‘t make it to one of the Literature Tours. Tomorrow will be another long day, a bus tour into the Highlands. I hope everything goes well!

Thankyou @LazyOwl for my gifts for the #MyBloodyValentineSwap You chose a WordCloud Edition I didn‘t have yet (believe me, that‘s a plus!) I haven‘t read Nikki Gemmel before so thanks for a new author to try, Green&Blacks is my favourite chocolate (especially Butterscotch. I‘ve read this before but didn‘t really remember it. Since the story is so well-known there is little mystery at the beginning, but I imagine when it was first published the build up to the ending would have been very suspenseful. An exploration of good and evil and what happens when we allow our worst impulses to take over. Good read for a rainy and windy evening. 👹 #monster #aintnorestforthrwicked #emojinov #tuneintonovember

I gave The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson three (3) stars out of five (5) stars. I think I had higher expectations of the book before reading it and once I did read the book, it didn't live up to those expectations. Regardless, I enjoyed the topic of good and evil. I do not think I would recommend this book, honestly. I feel as though reading the book is more of an expectation.

Up next is my first audiobook!

RE-READ! Okay, I had read this before the 1,001 list told me to & I re-read it because this book is so good. I love that it gives you a thriller while also tackling tough questions like the duality of man. Who are we when no one knows us? What dictates polite society? Would we continue to be polite if we weren't required to be? What about our baser instincts? SO good! *I found this picture on Wikipedia!* 12/1,001 #1001Books #RoryGilmoreChallenge

A quick read #forclass that also falls nicely into #spooktober. Like Frankenstein and Dracula, this is a story that exists one way in popular consciousness and another way in the source material. A strange, psychological novella shrouded in creepy Victorian London fog, and very much recommended.

Susannah I love what you've said here about how these stories exist in popular consciousness versus the source material. For me, this was especially true of Frankenstein. I wanted to pitch Victor off the nearest bridge when I read Frankenstein for the first time last year. I feel like his rejection of the creature is way downplayed in popular culture. What a jerk. 7y
frankincense_and_sensibility Right?! And like, there are all these turning points in the narrative where he could have not been a jerk and he chose to be one anyway. Like when he talks about how he hates how ugly the monster is, as if he didn't SEE IT ASSEMBLED ON THE TABLE before he reanimated it. 7y

What a huge difference between how characters look according to the original book, and their depiction in Hollywood movies! I grew up with the latter, like I'm sure all of us did, yet found myself in disbelief after reading the books for myself! Frankenstein's monster, Phantom, Mr. Hyde, Dracula etc

Mayread That just reminds me of how good Moffat's Jeckyll is. 8y
QueenAnne @Skiles doesn't ring a bell, but google tells me its a series? Sounds interesting! 8y
Mayread It uses the J&H story as its basis, but is set in the modern aughts. It's dark & good. You can see how he later moved on to Sherlock. 8y

Chrys I am going to have to look that series up. I love Dracula, which is different from most popular depictions. Somehow I have never gotten to Jeckyll and Hyde. Maybe my next serial read. 😀 8y
QueenAnne @Chrys I loved Dracula (the original book) and was so upset that no movie followed the book.. Jekyll and Hyde is just a tiny book, a "snack-sized book" hihi ? will take you just a few hours! 8y

Clever. Wish I hadn't heard of it so I could have experienced more of the suspense. At times I wanted it to hurry up. Considering watching the movie, not really one for old movies though. ❓

RebeccaRenner I taught this to a high school class last year, and it was hilarious, because they had no idea before hand that Jekyll and Hyde are the same person! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BeckyRenner That is just priceless! 8y
Casmt Fun! Did they enjoy it?! What kind of class? (Book lovers or not I mean) @BeckyRenner 8y
Casmt Did they watch the movie? 8y
RebeccaRenner @Casmact It was a lower scoring class of seniors. They didn't like reading as a rule, but they loved this and The Things They Carried. And no, we didn't watch the movie because I heard it was bad. 8y
