The Scarred Woman
The Scarred Woman: Department Q 7 | Jussi Adler-Olsen
107 posts | 36 read | 21 to read
The international no. 1 bestseller returns with his most captivating and suspenseful novel yet - perfect for fans of Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbo. In a Copenhagen park the body of an elderly woman is discovered. Though the case bears a striking resemblance to another unsolved homicide from over a decade ago, the police cannot find any connection between the two victims. Across town a group of young women are being hunted down. The attacks seem random, but could these brutal acts of violence be related? Detective Carl Mrck of Department Q is charged with solving the mystery. Back at headquarters, Carl and his team are under pressure to deliver results: failure to meet his superiors' expectations will mean the end of Department Q. Solving the case, however, is not their only concern. After a breakdown, their colleague Rose is struggling to deal with the ghosts of her past - a past seemingly connected to one of the division's most sinister case-files. It is up to Carl, Assad and Gordon to unearth the dark and violent truth plaguing Rose before it is too late.

Jussi Adler-Olsen says he wrote Carl the way he is because he himself is like Carl 😃 Actually, his name is Carl. Morck comes from a man he befriended when he was a boy. This man had murdered his wife. Apparently the policemen in Denmark are crazy about his books.

Pickpick

The trio is investigating the murder of an elderly women when an other elderly women is killed. Before they now it, they‘re investing several cases. For someone is also killing young women by driving them down. And someone robbed a disco.

In this book we get to know more about Rose, who has a meltdown and about her past.

Butterfinger Assad definitely. He just seems to be the most interesting. I would ask him about the camel proverbs. LOL!! 4y
EadieB I think I would have to have Assad to dinner too as he is the most interesting. Rose is too much in a funk these days so I would have to do most of the talking. Carl would be interesting too. I would ask Carl about he ex-wife and what he thinks went wrong with his marriage. 4y
Tove_Reads Assad is the most interesting one indeed. Carl would also be an interesting dinner guest. 4y
AnneCecilie I think Assad too. Rose and Carl are a little too moody for me. @Butterfinger @EadieB 4y

Butterfinger I really like the three characters. I like the supporting characters - Hardy and the person who lives in the basement (can't remember name). But I don't like introducing a mystery: attack on Carl and Hardy, Carl's uncle possible murder, and Assad's history and then the storyline doesn't move forward. 4y
EadieB The characters are the best part of this series. This series is starting to grow on me. Lackberg series I like the best and this one is second. Kepler series is a bit too full of sex and grit for me. 4y
AnneCecilie I like the characters too. 4y
Tove_Reads The strength is definitely that it‘s character driven, because they are great. 4y

Butterfinger I didn't like it at all. 4y
EadieB Not the best of plots. Very dysfunctional family! 4y
AnneCecilie It‘s been a long time since I have meet so many selfish people in one book. And it‘s highlighting a trend among younger people where they would rather receive benefits than have to work. In Norway this was a trend a few years ago among kids just finishing high school, they didn‘t want to study and they didn‘t want to work, so they got benefits to do what they wanted. It even got its own name NAVe @Butterfinger @EadieB 4y

Butterfinger That was extraneous information and it was not needed. I think the commissioner and the chief were trying to undermine Carl. And, I think Rose was not on top of her game which caused the numbers to seem low. 4y
EadieB I think they are just trying to close down Department Q and acquire the money set aside for them. 4y
AnneCecilie I didn‘t quite get that, but Carl seemed to think it was done to force the TV team on him. And maybe it was? An with Rose not up to her usual, it was easier to do it 4y

Butterfinger I think both were worried about Rose. I'm glad that Assad finally had enough of Carl correcting him and said something. I enjoy Assad's stories and not understanding idioms. 4y
EadieB I think Carl just gets annoyed at Assad because he just doesn't understand where Assad is coming from. 4y
AnneCecilie I‘m not sure. @Butterfinger You might be on to something regarding Rose. But I also think that it‘s a cultural thing and that they just don‘t understand each other‘s references. 4y
Marina_h Some of Assad's references are really strange so I'm guessing Carl just finds it frustrating not knowing what Assad means 4y

Butterfinger So incredibly sad. I wish more people would ask for help shortly after a traumatic experience. She had so much guilt and then the abuse would have come out during treatment. I wished the whole book was about Rose. 4y
EadieB It was so sad that her father treated her so badly. 4y
AnneCecilie Me too @EadieB @Butterfinger But the accident happened late 90s and the abuse in the 90s and I‘m not so sure how much this was talked about then. A lot have happened the last years regarding openness around these sort of things, at least in Norway and Denmark isn‘t that far away. Also we don‘t tend to talk to professionals 4y
See All 6 Comments
Butterfinger @AnneCecilie yes, you are right. I have family members who refuse counseling. 4y
Marina_h It certainly explains a lot about Rose and what she is dealing with. The abuse in itself is horrible but then seeing her father get killed like that must be so traumatic. I can't believe anyone would set her up like that. I know her father treated her bad and the colleagues did it to sort of help her, but was this really the way to go? @Butterfinger @AnneCecilie @EadieB 4y
Tove_Reads I liked it that her sister was quite open about it. Rose was quite the tough girl trying to protect the others. Still, her sisters seem very sane and normal, based on what we know about them, compared. 4y

Mehso-so

It seemed like a maze. Too many cases and it seemed like Adler-Olsen came up on too many blocked passages so he took the easy way out and connected the cases by having a major character be neighbors with a murdered person.

So convoluted and then oh, all six murder cases are connected. Easy Peasy. Just not realistic to me. Too coincidental.

Tove_Reads My least fave in the series. 4y

The body of an elderly woman is discovered. More attacks seem random, but could they be related? Plot revolves around Danish welfare system & its abuses. The team are uncovering the dark and violent truth at the heart of Rose‘s childhood. I do love all the characters in this series but this was a slow read as the book is too long and needs editing. I did enjoy getting more information about Rose's past. Here's hoping the next one is edited better.

Tove_Reads I think this one is my least fave. The plot didn‘t really move me at all. In the next one we‘ll get to know more about Assad, and I hope it‘ll be interesting! 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads It will be interesting to learn more about Assad too! 4y

#NordicNoir Discussions: July 5 Adler-Olsen, July 12 Läckberg, July 19 Kepler.

Andrew65 Just started book 2 in Department Q series, way behind on this one. Finished book 5 in the Joona Linna Series last night, Book 6 next week to catch up, and read first 4 Camilla Lackberg books (hope to catch up over the next month). Note to self, don‘t get behind in Series where the books are so long. 🤣 4y

Hmmm... slow motion. Should have been shorter and there could have been a lot more suspense. An elderly woman is found murdered. Someone is running over young women with a car. Rose‘s secret, her background, is revealed. I expected more. #NordicNoir
