Out of Darkness | Ashley Hope Pérez
"This is East Texas, and there's lines. Lines you cross, lines you don't cross. That clear?" New London, Texas. 1937. Naomi Smith and Wash Fullerton know about the lines in East Texas as well as anyone. They know the signs that mark them. They know the people who enforce them. But there are some forces even the most determined color lines cannot resist. And sometimes all it takes is an explosion. Ashley Hope Prez takes the facts of the 1937 New London school explosionthe worst school disaster in American historyas a backdrop for a riveting novel about segregation, love, family, and the forces that destroy people.

Ugh, this is a book I loved and hated. I loved it because it was a piece of history I knew nothing about, the characters were lovable, and I just couldn‘t put it down. I hated it because i knew something terrible was bound to happen at any given moment. I‘m not big into young adult novels, but this one was so important and captivating. Would recommend even though I was torn throughout.

I just started this one last night, and can‘t put it down! It‘s so well written with so many heavy topics. I had to pace myself because there‘s some sexual abuse in areas- which nobody likes to read and it‘s pretty difficult to get through. Aside from that, I‘m really enjoying the historical aspect and characters in the book. Except for Henry 🤮 he‘s terrible in every way imaginable.

I finished this today after a swim. I found this on a #bannedbook list so I had to read it! It‘s YA but it‘s more than just a coming of age story, it‘s set in East Texas in the ‘30‘s centring around a historical event. It‘s unflinching look at racism and prejudice is probably partly why it got banned, the emerging sexuality of the teens probably the other reason. It‘s well written and took my breath away many times

The idea of banning books is baffling to me… if you don‘t want to read it fine, but don‘t think that you have the power to dictate what I or anyone else reads! This book is important look at our nations unsavory history and if we don‘t learn from our past we are doomed to repeat it! At times this book made me uncomfortable but it is important to push past that… this is one that will stick with me for a long time to come!

Question of the day! 💭 📚 âŒ

How do you feel about books being banned? Below is an article on some of the books being banned in certain Texas schools… Makes me immediately want to read them! I totally disagree with it…

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/texas-books-race-sexuality-schools-rcna1388...

kspenmoll I grew up with total access to any books…no book should be banned, especially for the ridiculous reasons towns/schools boards/parents state. 2y
AmyG I think this is horrific. I can only hope it makes young people read them. Knowledge is power. 2y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I am against any and all book bans. Even if I don‘t want anything to do with the subject matter, I do not see it as morally correct to take/keep that knowledge from other people. Ever. 2y

mrp27 This makes me angry. I don‘t like the idea of censorship on any level even if I don‘t agree or believe in the subject. Book banning is a very dangerous and slippery slope. I‘m thankful and grateful that I grew up in a home and community where I was free to read whatever I wanted. 2y
wanderinglynn Book bans always make me want to read the book and also buy a box of the banned books and hand them out. 2y
TrishB It doesn‘t really happen here. If it did I‘d have just brought my kids all the books. 2y
KathyWheeler @TrishB That‘s what I did with my kids. They had a whole library of books that had been banned or challenged. 2y
KathyWheeler The most vile book I ever read was William Pierce‘s The Turner Diaries, about a race war in the US. It was in my university library and was essential to what I was doing at the time — studying white supremacist groups. Many of them consider it their bible. As vile as it was, I don‘t think it should be banned. I‘m pretty much against all book banning. (edited) 2y
Cortg I'm pretty over the book banning BUT our library system had to order more copies of Maus because we currently have 90, yes NINETY holds on it as of today! 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @wanderinglynn my thoughts exactly!! 2y
TheSpineView I am against banning books. As someone who hates to be told I HAVE TO, my general response is to do it anyway. 2y
Cortg Book banning is a serious problem in US schools right now. 60-70% of books being challenged are LGBTQ and the rest are BIPOC books, however this month books about the Holocaust are entering the picture. There‘s a group called Moms of Liberty operating in 33 states right now and it‘s downright scary! There‘s also a group of librarians fighting back on twitter #FReadom Check them out! https://bookriot.com/book-censorship-news-january-28-2022/amp/ 2y
Jennifer3 @kspenmoll Me, too! My parents let me read anything! Books should not be banned. 2y
Jennifer3 @wanderinglynn I read Maus and thought it was so good. I should not be shocked it was one being banned but I was! 2y
DarkMina I don‘t agree with censorship of any kind. You don‘t like the topic or the author, don‘t read it. 2y

1. Yes. I mean, I'm susceptible to publicity as much as anyone else.

2. I was a sophomore attending a Bible college in Oklahoma when Scorsese's film adaptation of Kazantzakis's The Last Temptation of Christ was banned in the state, and the book was removed from school and public libraries. I bought my own copy and carried it around campus. Got a lot of dirty looks, but also started conversations.

Oh god, this book broke me — completely, utterly tore me to shreds. It has a bit of a slow start, and as y'all know I don't love revolving POVs, but, my god, once the story really got started, I couldn't look away. Naomi & Wash were poetically rendered against the stormy Texas town on the eve & aftermath of the worst tragedy. A dark, searing romance about the price of love in a world clinging to a cliff. ★★★★☆.

This book broke my heart! I was not expecting the ending at all. I devoured this book in 2 sittings. The book was told from various perspectives. The chapters were short which made for a quick read. I generally don't like love stories, but this one was well written. It sheds light on a historical event I was unaware of. It also showed how unjust society was to minorities. This is a really good read and I would definitely recommend this book.

This was both an exciting and tough read. I wanted to know what would happen so badly that I couldn't put it down. However, many scenes and issues were incredibly dark and brutal, even for a YA title. The whole book was an emotional roller coaster. In some ways, it reminded me of White Oleander with its spellbinding writing and stark brutality. The interracial romance was great and made me long for more of those in YA. #2017Book24 #diversebooks

I absolutely adored the characters in this book. They were realistic and flawed and so endearing. This made it all the more jarring when their safety was threatened then they were saved repeatedly before one of the most violent and heart rending climaxes I've ever read. I appreciate all the historical details and that the author wanted to stay true to the period, but I still don't feel like it was necessary.

What an incredibly powerful and heartbreaking book to read right now. I finished it last night and just can't stop thinking about it. It was very difficult to read most of this book but it's such an important story that Ashley Perez has decided to tell from the perspectives that history often forgets. I won't forget Naomu and Wash for a long time. #fyabookclub

Generally, the 1930s is not a popular decade in YA historical fiction. The poverty of New London and Egypt Town is pervasive and requires everyone to make massive sacrifices. Did you learn anything new about how people survived the Depression? #novfyabc #fyabookclub

BrandiNB Honestly, I've never been much of a history buff, so pretty much anything is new to me. 😳I think more interesting to me was the fact that while life for Naomi was so much harder (in terms of money and access to food, clothing, 7y
BrandiNB etc.) prior to living with Henry, she would have gone back in a second. Not that I blame her at all! I was also pleased that Perez depicted minority characters dealing with economic and societal struggles that were often stereotypically assumed to be "dumb" or unintelligent as very smart and capable. 7y

When we chose this book for Nov. FYABC, we had no idea how apt it would be. We hope everyone is surviving the election results and fallout. Let's start the book discussion. #fyabookclub #novfyabc

1. This book deals with harsh racism and bigoted attitudes. How did you feel about Perez's use ofthe period's racist language?

BookNerdBritt It's always jarring for me on a personal level to read or hear certain slurs, but it's part of the context of the story. I wouldn't go as far as to advocate for using them, but I certainly don't fault the author for using them as a vehicle to show the ugliness of the attitudes toward people of color. 7y
skullsinthesea Agreed. To me, it felt authentic, because people certainly did speak that way, but that jarring feeling carried throughout the book. I thought she did it well, because it always stung--I was never desensitized. 7y
BrandiNB I agree that using such terms leant authenticity to the story. I think she did a great job of using language authentic to the time period, but making clear that it was NOT OKAY. While I wouldn't say that I would advocate for the use of racial slurs, I think the book might have been less impactful without them. 7y

So today is incredibly depressing, and finishing Out of Darkness, arguably the most depressing novel ever and the worst one to finish last night, didn't help. I feel like I'm in dire need of escapism. Unfortunately, an absurd amount of my TBR pile won't do. Litsy people, help me! Romance novels, non-depressing and non-rapey fantasy novels, funny books, books where the dog doesn't die! Please and thank you

This book was phenomenal... until the end. It wasn't that I expected a happy ending. I was prepared to be devastated. But it got to the point where it just became gratuitous. It was almost like the author was showing off, like "Look how many times I can make you think everything's okay and then rip your heart out!" I have enough of that in my own life right now, so at a certain point I just stopped caring in order to protect myself from the pain.

[DELETED] 206653737 Agree completely! Kept leading on that just maybe it would all be ok, nope! 7y
skullsinthesea I can totally see that, although I knew it was a Romeo and Juliet retelling(ish) going in, and Shakespeare sure likes to kill everyone onstage. 7y

Happy November! Let's get our #fyabookclub discussion going by introducing ourselves. No book spoilers on this question, please!

Icebreaker: Being the oldest female in the family, Naomi is thrust into a "homemaker" role. Some of her duties, like sewing new clothes, she genuinely enjoys. Do you have any "traditional" hobbies or duties that you particularly like to do?

I do love knitting however; it's soothing and rewarding, and I love seeing things materialize before me like magic. I also love cooking and baking, though I prefer one-pot meals to fancy feasts. There's something so satisfying about cooking for myself though. 7y
[DELETED] 206653737 Hi I'm Crystal from FYA Staunton VA. I hear ya @SeeStephWrite wish I were better at sewing too. I really enjoying cleaning the bathroom. Ok just kidding, that's not a favorite at all! I do enjoy cooking though and use that as a way to show family and friends some love. 7y

This is on the high school Sequoyah list. It's excellent, but as a warning does have a good amount of sexual abuse and violence. I'm fine with it for my library but I probably wouldn't give it to younger middle schoolers. That said, the characterization is terrific, and though it's long, the ending is a good payoff. Sheds light on a forgotten episode in East Texas history and the racial tensions there in the 1930s. Heartbreaking story!
