6. Meredith Russo makes it very clear that Amanda's story (or any trans person's story) should not be regarded as the definitive trans experience. Do you think she succeeded? Does the book avoid veering into after-school special territory? #fyabookclub #julyfyabc

[DELETED] 206653737 It was a little after school specialish, but it was still a good read and explored aspects that I hadn't considered before. 7y
BookNerdBritt @bookish22 It was a 4-star read for me, and then the author's note bumped it up to 5. I was just thinking, "Great story, but I hope people don't walk away from it thinking this is every trans person's experience," and then the author's note took extra care to explain why it's not. 7y

1. In many ways, Amanda is a typical teen: she's in several fandoms, she's afraid people will hate her if they know the real her, she has a crush on another person at school, she worries how she'll fit in with her friends, and she's struggling to relate to her parents and survive in a place that she doesn't necessarily love. Did you feel like Meredith Russo depicted the universal aspects of Amanda's life as well as the not-so-universal ones?

Let's break some ice!

Amanda becomes fast friends with Layla, Chloe, and Anna. Did you ever (or
do you still) belong to one of those friend groups that often shows up in
pop culture? What was your role? #fyabookclub #julyfyabc

BookNerdBritt 1/2 - My high school was pretty small, so my friend group was basically the outcasts, the ones that ended up banding together because we didn't fit in any other group. There was a lot of diversity within our group, though - we were a range of races and sexualities but also we had book nerds, math nerds, music nerds, etc. We were all weird in our own way, so no one really had a distinct role. 7y
BookNerdBritt 2/2 - 10+ years later, a handful of those friendships have stood the test of time, but in retrospect I see now that the ones that have faded away were the ones that were friendships of convenience at the time - the ones that didn't go any deeper beyond nerd solidarity. 🤷🏾‍♀️ 7y
manders I've always been the planner/organizer of the group, and kind of flitting between different groups of friends. (My whole life is very compartmentalized.) The rule follower, for sure. But also the ferocious defender, since I cussed out anybody who messed with my friends haha. Although my main group was in between the overachievers and the cool kids, so that only really happened like... 3 memorable times during high school and college. 7y

Last question for March's book!

The reason why Waverly can appear in Marshall's vicinity is never explained. Did that bother you, or did the story allow you to embrace it it with no explanation?

MrsCox2007 While I was reading the book, I didn't really care why Waverly could travel to Marshal, but it did bother me that Waverly didn't care why or how she could. I agree with @bookish22 about the characters could have been more developed. 7y

New month means it's time for a new book, and a new icebreaker!

Who was the Maribeth Whitman of your high school? And did you have any run-ins with her?

#fyabookclub #marfyabc

MrsCox2007 In my high school, there was one girl who I would say was a Maribeth. Because our school was so small (less than a tenth of the size of the one in our book), I had to deal with her on many occasions. But unlike Waverly, we were not friends. In fact many times, I was the one who tended to be on the receiving end of her mean side. 7y
manders I went to a huge high school (like 2700 students in total for all 3 grades?), so I'm sure there were Maribeths, but we were just too big for there to be one mean girl to rule the school. Plus, I was in nerd IB classes, so I basically only knew people in that group anyway, and we didn't have any notorious mean girls in my year. 7y

Last question for our discussion of our February book!

Did you enjoy the authors' take on history, or do you feel like they should have been truer to what actually happened?

#fyabookclub #febfyabc

MrsCox2007 I loved the authors' spin on history. I think I spent an hour or so researching farther into the lives of Jane and King Edward. I think I learned more because of the fantasy aspect to the book than I would have had they stuck to the truth. 7y
