Five Quarters Of The Orange
Five Quarters Of The Orange | Joanne Harris
36 posts | 63 read | 24 to read
Beyond the main street of Les Laveuses runs the Loire, smooth and brown as a sunning snake - but hiding a deadly undertow beneath its moving surface. This is where Framboise, a secretive widow, plies her culinary trade at the crperie - and lets her memory play strange games. As her nephew attempts to exploit the growing success of the country recipes Framboise has inherited from her mother, a woman remembered with contempt by the villagers, memories of a disturbed childhood during the German Occupation flood back, and expose a past full of betrayal, blackmail and lies.

Both hubby and I fully appreciated this book. I chose Berry Clafoutis from the foods mentioned in the novel. #foodandlit #foodandlit2022 I admit, I wasn‘t going to but after finishing, I did order the authors family cookbook.

Really enjoying the tagged book for #foodandlit #france. It has beautiful prose and gorgeous scenery despite the depressing topics of war, poverty, and illness. But also so many food references to choose from to make. While I was considering a galette Breton or a fish stew, right now I am leaning toward Berry Clafoutis! Hope I finish in time to cook before the end of the month as I am traveling next weekend.

Catsandbooks Yum!! 4mo

Final entry for #7Days7Books #7Tage7Buecher

Joanne Harris is another of my absolute favourite authors. I love the unsettling & unexpected creepiness in her writing, as well as the joyfulness, and the appreciation of the everyday magic of food! All her books are amazing, but this one stuck in my mind for weeks after I finished reading.

I originally received this as an ARC and then my work life started to impede my ability to participate in such things in the way I once did. So I just now got to this while recovering from surgery. I‘m over half way through and enjoying it so much. It is very well written and engaging despite having a quite somber story line. Will definitely finish this before heading back to work at the end of the week.

Recovering from surgery last week and sick with bronchial ick. And possibly looking at another surgery next week. I‘m tired and wiped out. Lots of reading, Litsy, Goodreads, and YouTube going on. And holding cats. This is Miss. Pearl Girl. She has a misery too. Little bit of cold in her eye. So we convalesce together. I looked down and she was doing a big blep. #yougogirl #ugh #tootiredtoshower #ugh

Someone recommended this book to me years ago but it was never available in store when I would check! Just started it and oh my goodness it‘s beautiful, I can‘t explain it, it‘s just so beautiful, I‘m only on chapter 2, must go to work today but I wish I could just step in this book!

Pollen decided she would help me take a Litsy photo tonight. It just so happens that my last bath fizzy is orange and ginger, matches the book I am starting, and apparently makes a great cat toy. #catsoflitsy

julesG Cute cat with a really great name! 4y
mdm139 @julesG thank you, she named herself. When we got her as a rescue kitten we noticed she was sweet as honey. So we started listing terms related to honey and every time we said Pollen she would meow and rub on us. A couple years ago my mom got a tortie cat too and named her Honey. 4y
julesG That's a wonderful story. 4y

Here‘s my #fivestack—I wanted to do a stack of five books with “five” in the title, but I discovered that I don‘t have five of those. So I went a different direction... 😁 #readingresolutions

Set in occupied France during the second world war, the orange is used to torment. A sad, disturbing read but war should be both.
