RoseBlood
RoseBlood | A. G. Howard
This YA novel from New York Times bestselling author A. G. Howard marks the beginning of a new era for fans of the Splintered series. Rune Germaine moves to a boarding school outside of Paris, only to discover that at this opera-house-turned-music-conservatory, phantoms really do exist. RoseBlood is a Phantom of the Opera–inspired retelling in which Rune’s biggest talent—her voice—is also her biggest curse. Fans of Daughter of Smoke and Bone and the Splintered series will find themselves captivated by this pulse-pounding spin on a classic tale.   Rune, whose voice has been compared to that of an angel, has a mysterious affliction linked to her talent that leaves her sick and drained at the end of every performance. Convinced creative direction will cure her, her mother ships her off to a French boarding school for the arts, rumored to have a haunted past.   Shortly after arriving at RoseBlood conservatory, Rune starts to believe something otherworldly is indeed afoot. The mystery boy she’s seen frequenting the graveyard beside the opera house doesn’t have any classes at the school, and vanishes almost as quickly as he appears. When Rune begins to develop a secret friendship with the elusive Thorn, who dresses in clothing straight out of the 19th century, she realizes that in his presence she feels cured. Thorn may be falling for Rune, but the phantom haunting RoseBlood wants her for a very specific and dangerous purpose. As their love continues to grow, Thorn is faced with an impossible choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or save her and face the wrath of the phantom, the only father he’s ever known.   A. G. Howard brings the romantic storytelling that Splintered fans adore to France—and an entirely new world filled with lavish romance and intrigue—in a retelling inspired by a story that has captivated generations. Fans of both The Phantom of the Opera musical and novel, as well as YA retellings such as Marissa Meyer’s Cinder, will devour RoseBlood.

I‘m late to the party I know but this very cool tag, especially since I do love a good YA (other than contemporary, sorry, angsty teens at least need a dragon or 10) & I just must!! It‘s a paranormal tag this week so RoseBlood; that I have started and put down distractedly a few times, fits the bill. Possibly more gothic than paranormal but I do love this edition so let‘s just go with it! 😊😊😊 #YAWednesday

Admittedly, the vanity red ink didn't get me started on the right foot with this one, but I really did want to give it a chance as the narrator's voice and situation (American girl starting at European boarding school) put me in mind of the Shades of London series. BUT the whole set-up is unignorably silly. Rune suffers from an embarrassing singing "compulsion", there's mentions of auras and chakras (lol), and my patience, frankly, has run out! ?

So I'm finding this hard to capture on camera, but if the above text looks vaguely reddish, that is because it IS!!! I don't know WHO at the publisher's thought this was a good idea and signed off on it, but the entire book is printed in red ink!!! WHY????? This is driving me and my eyeballs nuts! 👀 😵🙅

BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds like a printing gimmick not a reading feature. Ugh. 2y

Book 21 of my year is this one. It is so beautiful, the text is written in red, the pages and cover is so elegant, and can I just say the book smells like a little slice of heaven. I am in love with the cover artwork and the overall pleasantness of this book. It‘s easily one of the most gorgeous books I have in my collection. Must. Get. More. From. This. Author. ASAP.

Caffeinated_Reader The over all presentation of the book is beyond beautiful, that being said the story was just meh. I feel like a lot of it was dragged out and prolonged and unnecessary. I liked the characters very much and the back story of thorn was beautifully & tragically done which made me sympathetic to him. I give this book 3.5 out of 5 ⭐️ 2y

I tried to give this book a fair chance; I went into it excited and with an open mind. I am a huge fan of The Phantom of the Opera, so I was looking forward to a modern retelling. That is not what I got. The book is poorly written, the protagonist is a complete Mary-Sue, and the plot is majorly lacking. Also, AG Howard likes books with colored print, and this book was no different. The red print gave me headaches, and made reading it a chore.

Daughter_of_Opulence Damn it. I was looking forward to the same thing. Oh well. 2y

The book often veered into melodrama–which, given the story, could have been really fitting, but instead was so over-the-top it pulled me out. The parts of the story told from Thorn‘s point of view were the most ridiculous. The story would have been served better if we had experienced the mystery along with Rune, instead of knowing so much about Thorne and the Phantom.

Guys this book! Not gonna lie took me a bit to get into but then I just devoured it! I don't know if it's because I love the phantom of the opera but the premise is really intriguing and I really liked the characters. Plus the amount of sensory detail with colors and scents is just great!

Beginning: couldn't put it down
Middle: pretty good then bad then just eye roll inducing
End: anticlimactic then just plain stupid

This really took me forever to read. And I'm heartbroken it wasn't good because I truly was so excited about this book. And omg it's so beautiful 😭

It's not often that I give books 5- star ratings, but I loved this retelling of The Phantom is the Opera! It was so perfect, it read like a continuation of the original story. If you haven't read the original, that's okay. The author gives you enough background details for the story to make sense. It put me in the mood to read more macabre.

RoseBlood is no where near as good as I was expecting. The summary made it one of my most anticipated reads, but sadly it is too basic for me. The idea of it and the vibe are on point, but there is too much in the plot that I've seen way too many times. For example the no cell phone reception, the teenage girl with power or whatever she can't control, the clique of mean girls, and etc. By about halfway through I was just bored by the whole thing.

rubyslippersreads That's how I felt too. The beautiful cover was the best thing about it. 2y

I was incredibly disappointed with this book .... there were some super specific reasons why I didn't like it, one of them was the insta love. I found it slightly creepy in this case. The other reason I won't give due to spoilers but I mentioned it on goodreads if you want to read that review. Feel free to add me on goodreads too (Nicole Alycia)

This was an interesting read. It doesn't hold a candle to the original, and I felt it relied to heavily on mysticism, when reality would have made it more poignant and frightening. But the cover is gorgeous and I did enjoy reading it.

What? When does this book take place? I thought it took place like, now. 1840 is in no way hundreds of years before 2017, let alone hundreds of years before this 19 year old was born. The descriptions of his childhood are like, Les Mis level, and don't sound modern. Guys, I can't with this. But I also can't stop reading, so 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have many questions. How does a paranoid recluse maintain all those plants and animals? I feel like non-living booby traps would have an easier upkeep. Does he have a poisonous frog supplier? Does he have a bat trainer? What is the food source for any of these animals? How does one check on them and feed them without setting the traps off?
