Inspector Agnes Lthi, a Swiss-American police officer in Lausanne, Switzerland, has just transferred to the Violent Crimes unit from Financial Crimes to try to shed all reminders of her old life following her husband's death. Now, on the eve of the worst blizzard Lausanne has seen in centuries, Agnes has been called to investigate her very first homicide case. On the lawn of the grand Chteau Vallotton, at the edge of Lac Lman, a young woman has been found stabbed to death. The woman, an appraiser for a London auction house, had been taking inventory at the chteau, a medieval fortress dripping in priceless works of art and historical treasures. Agnes finds it difficult to draw answers out of anyonethe tight-lipped Swiss family living in the chteau, the servants who have been loyal to the family for generations, the aging WWII survivor who lives in the neighboring mansion, even the American history student studying at the Vallotton chteau's library. As the storm rages on, roads become impassible, the power goes out around Lausanne, and Agnes finds herself trapped in the candlelit halls of the chteau with all the players of the mystery, out of her depth in her first murder case and still struggling to stay afloat after the death of her husband. Swiss Vendetta, Tracee de Hahn's mesmerizing debut, is an emotionally complex, brilliantly plotted mystery set against the beautiful but harsh backdrop of a Swiss winter.

While there were definitely things I liked about this book (the amazing descriptions/feel of the setting), I just wasn‘t as invested with the characters as I wanted. Other than the secondary character, 90 yo Vladimir Arsov, whose personal story left me haunted and mesmerized, the rest of the cast felt flat to me. Pretty much a locked-door murder mystery (obviously set in Switzerland), a young woman is murdered at a fabulous chateau during the 🔻

robinb blizzard of the century and newly transferred Agnes Luthi (formerly in Financial Crimes) has her first assignment in Violent Crimes. Agnes is returning to duty following the death of her husband and has a host of her own personal issues to deal with. As they are virtually cut off from the outside world, Agnes and her makeshift team must unravel the victim‘s background as well as other possible motives to catch the killer. 🔻 (edited) 2y
robinb While this is a decent mystery, my problem (other than the above mentioned), is that I found small instances of contradictions from earlier passages that irked me. I also found certain police procedures (or lack there of) annoying. The first half of the book was sluggish but did pick up in the latter as Agnes seemed to gain more self-confidence in her abilities. Just my personal take and probably an #unpopularopinion. However…#coverlove! 3/5⭐️ 🔻 (edited) 2y

#BackpackEurope
A well written, whodunit mystery with a Gothic twist. If that's not enough, I don't know what is. For a debut novel this was especially good. The way the setting is portrayed was absolutely stunning and the characters really came alive in the writing. Probably a 4&1/2⭐ book, but definitely a solid 4⭐
Going to be keeping an eye out for more books by the author now 😊

Warning: do not read this in cold weather, or when you are feeling chilly. It takes place during an ice storm in a secluded Château in Switzerland, and you will freeze your butt off just reading about it. It‘s excellent, though, and I‘m looking forward to the next one.

Up next! I really love this cover. I actually completely bought this book for the cover.

Laalaleighh Also, I just finished reading Prince In Disguise which was delightfully adorable but I forgot to review it. Totally recommend for a cute, slump buster, brain candy type craving. 6y

It took me awhile to get into this book. It's a cosy mystery with all the ingredients. Eventually it caught me and I ended up enjoying the snowed-in-at-a-swiss-mansion whodunnit.

You know the old adage “Never judge a book by its cover?” Well, it was far from top of mind when I spotted this beauty buried in the Mystery section at Barnes & Noble a few weeks ago. Hadn‘t heard of the author. Wasn‘t discounted. Set in Switzerland. But the cover! It called to me. So, I bought it. Glad I did. Full review at http://itsallaboutthebook.org.

The first thing that drew me to this book was the cover. It's also a mystery, which is one of my favorite genres, and I thought that its setting (Switzerland) would be interesting. In spite of all this, it didn't keep my interest. The dialogue was sometimes weird and confusing and there were not enough clues along the way to keep up the suspense. After reading about 200 pages (of 350), I skipped ahead to see the solution and called it quits.

johnnie_cakes I gave up around 150 right after the reveal that her husband killed himself because he was gay. 7y

Pictured: the four books that made it through the culling process. Not pictured: the fifth book which is reserved for my #LGP #BlindDateWithaBook selection. Also not pictured: my tears of sadness and longing over all the books I was forced to leave behind.

Did I pick two of these based solely on the beauty of the cover? Who knows? I'll never tell.

ScorpioBookDreams I've been admiring the Keeper of Lost Things for a while now. You'll have to let me know if it's any good.💕💕 7y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Let me guess, first and last one??? Because that is exactly where my eyes went 😍😍😍 7y
Laalaleighh @BooksTeasAndBookishThings close! First two! I'm a sucker for covers with falling snow. Idk why. 7y

BooksTeasAndBookishThings I am a sucker for vintage and dark lol first and last ones would be definites if buying for cover alone 😁 7y
PurpleyPumpkin 😍😍😍 7y
Laalaleighh @BooksTeasAndBookishThings The last one was also picked up for its cover. I literally just have pretty cover addiction problems. 7y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Me, too. It is deep and it is real. 7y
Laalaleighh @BooksTeasAndBookishThings should we start a support group? 7y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Yes, but perhaps we should start by seeing what every one typically goes for to find ways to help cope and abstain... so field trip to a book store first meeting. 7y
Laalaleighh @BooksTeasAndBookishThings absolutely the best course of action. 7y
MeganAnn @Laalaleighh @BooksTeasAndBookishThings Can I join your support group? I'm a sucker for gorgeously design covers 😳😍 7y
Laalaleighh @MeganAnn @BooksTeasAndBookishThings of course!!! The more the merrier!! 7y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings @MeganAnn @Laalaleighh We need each other to make sure we do (not) buy so many books. 😉 7y
Laalaleighh @MeganAnn @BooksTeasAndBookishThings exactly. We can meet at the bookstore and point out the beautiful covers we shouldn't be buying. 7y
MeganAnn @Laalaleighh 😂😂😂 exactly! And then we can support each other when we go home with all the books..... @BooksTeasAndBookishThings 7y
Laalaleighh @MeganAnn @BooksTeasAndBookishThings sounds like the perfect plan to me! 7y
Laalaleighh @BooksTeasAndBookishThings definitely. Never 4. 7y
Laalaleighh @BooksTeasAndBookishThings and two is right out! 😂 7y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings Two is the only acceptable even number in my book, IF I had to choose one, but 1 is laughable, 3 isn't enough... so I say 5 is our go-to. Just seems right. 7y
Laalaleighh @BooksTeasAndBookishThings Five it is! @MeganAnn Cal and I have discovered we both have a deep, random dislike of even numbers. 7y
BooksTeasAndBookishThings It is very true. 7y

I received an eARC from the publisher via NetGalley. An excellent mystery with twists and turns and a classic feel. I loved it!
Swiss Vendetta is one of those rare finds that delivers a compelling mystery, a likeable heroine, and a stunning setting. It‘s so refreshing to read a mystery in a modern-day setting, that hints at classic mystery elements. I truly loved this mystery and can‘t wait to read more from the author!

We've made our way from my parents home in GA to Sedona, AZ. My husband has wanted to bring me here for years. I woke up at 4, started reading and waiting to capture the sunrise. It's stunning here. I'm happy to have some days of relaxation before going home to welcome in the new year. The hotel room has a fireplace, so I am planning to hike, eat, relax and read in front of that fire.

Lindy Enjoy. Looks like a lovely spot. 7y
Alicia Love Sedona! I live just north in Flagstaff! Have a great trip. 7y
HardcoverHearts @Alicia - is there any special thing we shouldn't leave here without doing? Any good used bookstores?! 😉 7y

Alicia @HardcoverHearts hmmm definitely hiking! Bell Rock is great there are a lot of trails there! There's also a crazy cowboy store called Clear Creek Trading that's super fun! Sedona unfortunately lost their only bookstore 😫 but Flagstaff has one if you feel like trekking up to the snow! 7y
HardcoverHearts We might make our way up to Flagstaff tomorrow. But for today, it's hiking and eating and reading! Thank you! 7y
