City of Thieves
City of Thieves: A Novel | David Benioff
From the critically acclaimed author of The 25th Hour and When the Nines Roll Over, a captivating novel about war, courage, survival — and a remarkable friendship that ripples across a lifetime.During the Nazis’ brutal siege of Leningrad, Lev Beniov is arrested for looting and thrown into the same cell as a handsome deserter named Kolya. Instead of being executed, Lev and Kolya are given a shot at saving their own lives by complying with an outrageous directive: secure a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet colonel to use in his daughter’s wedding cake. In a city cut off from all supplies and suffering unbelievable deprivation, Lev and Kolya embark on a hunt through the dire lawlessness of Leningrad and behind enemy lines to find the impossible.By turns insightful and funny, thrilling and terrifying, the New York Times bestseller City of Thieves is a gripping, cinematic World War II adventure and an intimate coming-of-age story with an utterly contemporary feel for how boys become men.

There is not much that is earth shattering here: plot is consistent, characters are dynamic enough to keep it all interesting, and the setting is the real star here. This reads as a great primer for WWII‘s eastern front brutality, but self admittedly not a comprehensive overview.

For some reason today's prompt made me think of this cover/book, which I have yet to read. Two prisoners in Nazi-occupied Russia on a literal egg hunt, tasked to find a dozen eggs for the wedding cake of colonel's daughter, making their way through "the dire lawlessness of Leningrad." Anyone read it?

Do be warned that it is violent and the dialogue can be crude.

All that is left of the wonderful egg tarts someone brought me. Love the people, love the food. I love books set in Russia. I had read a nonfiction book about the siege of Leningrad. This book felt like the typical adventure tale but with the dire backdrop of a city/area waiting for invasion. Bombastic characters and sparkling humor, sadly intense moments highlighting the vagaries of war. Less than 300 pages but it gets it right.

This one just sucks you in and won‘t let go; great characters, engaging setting, and the stake are at the life-or-death level. Audiobook reader Ron Perlman (yep, Hellboy himself) does a spectacular job as well. Highly recommended.

Bookish_B Is this YA? I was thinking of recommending this for book club but we did a YA book last month so I don't think they'd go for another so soon. 9mo
Swe_Eva @Bookish_B Not at all. The cover does make it look slightly juvenile, but the subject matter is very much serious, albeit with a lot of dark humor. 9mo

A coming of age story set during the siege of Leningrad in WW2. I think the author did an excellent job of establishing the setting and conveying the bleakness and horror of desperate people in a desperate time. There was a good bit of black humor. Compelling plot and pacing. Trigger warnings for a lot of sexual references, crude language, and violence.

I never thought of putting a buddy comedy in WWII Russia but here we are. This book is a gem. The story is by turns funny and heartbreaking, tender and foul-mouthed, and the odd pairing of Lev and Kolya are its heart and soul. After 250 pages (or 8.5 hours, in my case) of watching them wander and make trouble on the hunt for their Egg MacGuffin, you can‘t help but love them.

City of Thieves, a historical fiction novel by David Benioff, is one of my all time favorites! I‘m a sucker for dark, disturbing, yet human accounts of war. It is both a coming of age story set in the World War II Siege of LeningradIt and a classic adventure tale that follows the adventures of two young men. Warning: this is not for the squeamish. It is violent and dark, but beautiful and poetic at the same time!

This is really good. While reading I realized that I don't really know anything about the Russian experience of WW2 so I appreciated it for that reason alone. But it was also full of interesting characters and even had some humor. The writing was well done-being able to not just see but hear and smell and feel the story I'm reading is my favorite thing.

Lev and Kolya are thrown together by their mistakes, and their lives depend on an impossible task: find a dozen eggs for a Colonel's daughter's wedding cake, in a city racked by starvation. Benioff portrays the arbitrary and cruel nature of war without soaking the story in despair. There is humor and rage and sadness and friendship in perfect balance. Excellent novel! Warnings: violence, talk of violence, sex, talk of sex, you get the idea.

I had trouble getting into this book so I tried the audiobook instead. I was pleasantly surprised by Ron Perlman's narration of this novel. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I like the story enough for Perlman to completely save it for me. Only a little left to go and, based on numerous rave reviews, I just feel like I must be missing something.

Lola This was a "like" not "love" for me. Solid 3 stars. The narration definitely helped me enjoy the story more than would have if I just read it. Trivia note-David Benioff is co-creator of the GOT television show. But everyone here probably knows that already ? (edited) 2y

This poor book sat on my TBR for years, but I finally got around to listening to the audio on Overdrive. It is a violent, gruesome, and unflinching look at the horrors of war, even for civilians, but somehow, it's also really funny! I know that makes me sound crazy, but I swear it's funny. It drags a bit in the middle and the locker room banter got annoying, but it's still for sure a pick.

During the Nazis' siege of Leningrad, an unlikely and hapless duo are thrown together in a mission to search for a dozen eggs in exchange for their freedom. Seems almost impossible when food is scarce, weather is harsh and enemies are attacking. I was drawn to their desperate quest and like the bond between the pair. Writing is skillfull, it's like watching a movie. It's suspenseful, tragic, sad, insightful, funny and occasionally grim. I love it.
