Rosie Revere, Engineer
Rosie Revere, Engineer | Andrea Beaty
27 posts | 35 read | 21 to read
Rosie may seem quiet during the day, but at night shes a brilliant inventor of gizmos and gadgets who dreams of becoming a great engineer. When her great-great-aunt Rose (Rosie the Riveter) comes for a visit and mentions her one unfinished goalto flyRosie sets to work building a contraption to make her aunts dream come true. But when her contraption doesnt fly but rather hovers for a moment and then crashes, Rosie deems the invention a failure. On the contrary, Aunt Rose insists that Rosies contraption was a raging success: you can only truly fail, she explains, if you quit. From the powerhouse author-illustrator team of Iggy Peck, Architect comes Rosie Revere, Engineer, another charming, witty picture book about believing in yourself and pursuing your passion. Praise for Rosie Revere, Engineer"Comically detailed mixed-media illustrations that keep the mood light and emphasize Rosies creativity at every turn."Publishers Weekly "The detritus of Rosies collections is fascinating, from broken dolls and stuffed animals to nails, tools, pencils, old lamps and possibly an erector set. And cheddar-cheese spray." Kirkus Reviews "This celebration of creativity and perseverance is told through rhyming text, which gives momentum and steady pacing to a story, consistent with the celebration of its heroine, Rosie. Shes an imaginative thinker who hides her light under a bushel (well, really, the bed) after being laughed at for one of her inventions." Rosie loves tinkering and engineering, but struggles with failure—her Aunt Rose teaches her how failure is an important part of inventing. This book has fabulous colorful and whimsical illustrations. #picturebook #childrensbooks

Stormy is FULL. I think I have 5-6 new tote bagels. Have gotten almost everything I wanted except for magic misfits after a rude person pushed me and said the line started back there!! (The people running the booth said there was no line. Tired but happy. And 6 more hours to go.

Next stop luggage check.

Craftylikefox I love 💕 your read question think tote!!! 1y
ravenlee What an awesome tote bag! 1y
LibrarianRyan @Craftylikefox that is the one I HAD to have. The publisher normally does a different totebag each day and sometimes 2 a day based on a kids books. I collect them when ever I can. 1y
LibrarianRyan @ravenlee I think it's my favorite. Scholastic has a Harry Potter bag but it's hard to get. I'll try later. I love scholastic and they love me. 1y

LibrarianRyan No kids but I work with them. Any thing Aaron Reynolds. beasts of Olympus is a fun new early chapter series if your sick of MTH. Bill Nye has a great new series (only 2 book so far) that mixes science and adventure. Plus Obert Sky has an awesome new books. And his older series are great as well. There were not as popular as Riordan and Rowling but that's because they come from a smaller press. 2y
OrangeMooseReads Man Cub is almost 10, 4th grade, loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, Who/What is/Was.. ? Series, Grimm Sisters (I think that‘s the name) 2y
LibrarianRyan Plus the 13- story tree house series is growing in books and popularity. Plus any thing Chris Galbrison. (That's spelt wrong). 2y
jessijames Love hearing these new ideas! I want to order some new books for my school library. I knew my Litsy friends would come up with some great ones to research. (edited) 2y

This RF is a MUST in your classroom library. The story is of a young girl named Rosie who makes anything out of everything, even trash. She‘s an engineer in the making until her project flops and she no longer wants to try to create. She then gets a visit from someone who sparks her imagination and teaches her a valuable lesson. #UCFLAE3414 Https://www.andreabeaty.com/rosie-revere-engineer.html

Laura.S I would love to do this as a Choral Read because the book uses rhyming words and children find it fun to read. UDL 9.1 promotes expectations and optimizes motivation which aligns great with this book because it teaches children to never give up and even though you may fail, you should not quit. EL 15 states to reinforce key ideas present which would be perfect. 2y
LisaMart @laura.s this sounds like a good one! Do you think you could also introduce the topic of recycling and repurposing to students with this book? (edited) 2y
Laura.S @LisaMart you absolutely could use this for a recycling/reuse lesson. I think that would be a cute story to introduce an important topic 2y
DrSpalding Nice job switching up your teaching strategy. I first saw this series of books in one of the Smithsonian museum shops in Washington DC. Each book would be an excellent addition to your library. 2y

This awesome F New York Times Best Seller would be great for RA. This book describes Rosie and her passion for being an engineer. Her uncle discourages her from pursuing her dreams but her Aunt tells her to keep trying even if she fails. UDL 6.1 Guide appropriate goal-setting. ESOL 41. Have students compile notebooks of their hypothesis, materials, procedures, data, conclusions of experiments, and field experiments #UCFLAE3414F17

Teresaj https://www.andreabeaty.com/uploads/1/5/2/4/15240358/rosie_revere_event_kit_v2.p... this is an event kit from the author that looks super fun to incorporate in the classroom! 2y

Written by Andrea Beaty and illustrated by David Roberts, this RF/P PB is a New York Times bestseller and would be great for a RA. This book is about Rosie, a budding engineer, who invents gizmos that often fail. But she doesn't give up and tries to fix her mistakes. You could use this book for a poetry lesson or for STEAM subjects. https://www.andreabeaty.com/rosie-educational-resources.html

EricaG The link takes you to the authors website where she has STEM and CCSS aligned lesson plans and activities. One of the activities is for students to try to redesign the Rosie-copter in groups, to get the Rosie-copter to fall slowly to the ground by trying different strategies. 2y
EricaG This could meet UDL 6.2- support planning and strategy development and EL 32- use student pairs for team learning, especially for reports, experiments, and projects. #UCFLAE3414F17 2y

Rosie Revere Engineer written by Andrea Beaty and Illustrated by David Roberts is a NYTBS RF picture book and would be a perfect RA in the classroom. This book is about a young girl who dreamed of becoming an engineer but failed and let down her uncle and then began to give up on her goals. Her aunt Rose comes around at the perfect time and reminds Rosie of how smart she is and to not give up because “The only true failure can come if you quit”.

WendyP The UDL guideline that I would use for this book would be 2.1 and 6.1. As the teacher, I would start by discussing key vocabulary and going over definitions that are in the book that the students may not know, such as “perplexed” and “dismayed”. I would use 6.1 and have students set goals for themselves and remind them that they can be anything that they want to be. The ESOL strategy that I would use is number 5 and a useful website for this book 2y
WendyP Is http://www.andreabeaty.com/rosie-educational-resources.html this website provides helpful activities that are aligned with STEM and CCSS as well as tinker stations for Young Engineers. 2y
Sabrinac Hi Wendy! Wow this book looks so inspiring and I love that. I think it's very important for young children to realize that they can do anything they put their minds to, and to never give up on their goals. I will have to read this book for sure(: 2y
DrSpalding What a wonderful quote and a fantastic book selection. These books belong in your classroom libraries and can help you teach STEAM related lessons. 2y

Sorry I've been a little MIA, friends. It's been a tough week, but I really appreciate the support I've had from all of you. I can't participate in #24in48 this time but I'll be rooting you all on! This book (and the whole series) is awesome! I love that there are struggles and naysayers and misunderstandings throughout, because it's so realistic but also inspiring. Just bought a copy for my cousin's new baby, and I will recommend it to everyone!

What a great concept. Not only is this little girl a budding engineer, creating and constructing all sorts of cool things from trash, but she fails. A lot. And that's awesome. The importance of failure - what a great thing to teach kids! Also, I love this picture, because one of my favorite things to ask my little one is to look at a picture of a person and imagine how they feel. You can only see half her face, and it still captures emotion.

Beckys_Books I bought this for my niece for Christmas so she would know why Aunt Becky likes being an engineer. 3y
Lmstraubie There are two others in this series - Iggy Peck Architect and Ada Twist Scientist. Both are along the same lines - overcoming a challenge through resilience & perseverance. All three characters appear in all three books. ☺ 3y
asiriusreader Love these so much! I have been sharing Rosie Revere with my 4th graders for three years or so. This year we also read Ada Twist. Such great messages. And I love the rhyming. 3y

I read this book on March 10, 2017. It was pretty great. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am happy that I bought it for my nieces, who are four (they're twins).

The takeaway from this story? "The only true failure can come if you quit."

I love this book and am now a little mad at myself for not standing in line to get an autographed copy at BEA. It illustrates the the only way to fail is to quit. And that a girl can be anything she wants. Even an engineer.
