Work. Pump. Repeat.
Work. Pump. Repeat.: The New Mom's Survival Guide to Breastfeeding and Going Back to Work | Jessica Shortall
6 posts | 3 read
The practical, relatable, and humorous guide to surviving the difficult, awkward, and rewarding job of being a breastfeeding, working mom. Meet the frenemy of every working, breastfeeding mother: the breast pump. Many women are beyond "breast is best" and on to figuring out how to make milk while returning to demanding jobs. Work. Pump. Repeat. is the first book to give women what they need to know beyond the noise of the "Mommy Wars" and judgment on breastfeeding choices. Jessica Shortall shares the nitty-gritty basics of surviving the working world as a breastfeeding mom, offering a road map for negotiating the pumping schedule with colleagues, navigating business travel, and problem-solving when forced to pump in less-than-desirable locales. Drawing on the war stories, hacks, and humor of working moms, and on her own stories from her demanding job and travel in developing countries, she gives women moral support for dealing with the stress and guilt that come with juggling working and breastfeeding. As she tells the reader in her witty, inspiring manifesto, "Your worth as a mother is not measured in ounces." 2015 Axiom Business Book Award Winner (Silver) in the category of Women/Minorities

Went on our first road trip this weekend to Grammy and Papa's house. I had some backseat Mommy reading time. This book was exactly what I needed! It was an honest look at returning to work and still providing for you baby whether it's still breastfeeding or moving on. Every chapter reminded me that I am an important member in this relationship with my baby and that whatever we choose is our choice and we have to do what's best for us. 💙💛

Readergrrl Ugh, I remember having to hide in a single stall bathroom to pump while at work. I teach in a high school so my schedule had NO normalcy to it. Luckily I think things have changed dramatically in the last 10 years!! 😊😊😊 9mo
aroc @Readergrrl Its better but not great. Fingers crossed I get through it! If not, oh well! 9mo

My poor hubby was so excited to think I was reading a book about working out (he‘s a power lifter and gym time is his happy time) so needless to say he was very disappointed when I explained what the “pump” in the title is. Photos of soon to be with us Tyr and the daddy he looks exactly like because they‘re both just so cute!

Mehso-so

I often couch my expectations of work-related parenting books because they tend to be centered around professional women. As a shift worker in manufacturing, I struggled to relate to much of this book. If anything, I did enjoy some of the more humorous stories shared and I at least learned how to address moisture buildup in my pump's tubing.

UrsulaMonarch I've heard to leave the tubing not hooked up to a collection unit & run the pump- is that right? 😂👶🤔 (edited) 2y
Phlamboyant @UrsulaMonarch Collection unit! 🤣 And, yes, that is correct. 2y
UrsulaMonarch @Phlamboyant 👍 my brain was completely failing me on the noun front!! #sleepdeprivation 2y
Phlamboyant @UrsulaMonarch Solidarity. I think I'll start using collection unit now. Am I talking about my bottles? Am I talking about something else? HR will never know . . . 2y

Finally "finished" it! I did a lot of skimming. Of course, I finished it and figured out that I'm not sure how much more I can mentally handle but hey she's 4.5 months and I'm doing a slow wean. It was a good book, btw.
