Utterly riveting, Solvej Balle's On the Calculation of Volume (Book I) is the grand opening of her speculative fiction septology, winner of the 2022 Nordic Council Literature Prize (Scandinavia's most important literary award) for being "a masterpiece of its time."

Really enjoyed this and have Vol II waiting for me. It‘s the first “stuck in time” book I‘ve read that really considers what the inner journey would be like. And some beautiful writing, capturing the feelings of being alone, feeling isolated. I almost found it too imaginable, it felt so real and oppressing in parts!
Photo is from a sunny weekend away in Wellington.

squirrelbrain Great review! I have Volume III waiting for me! 😊 3d

“ And suddenly I had a glimpse of hope : a moon on the wane moving in the right direction , a time that had begun to pass “ ..

Is it a book about a day before trauma ? , a day around trauma , I have woken up to remember some traumatic news ? .. to the day this trauma is told to me.
And where do I go from here ? What do I do now ?
These are the thoughts as I read it.
It‘s taking awhile for me to appreciate this book…what it‘s all about

I‘m so sad that I couldn‘t find the appeal in this European Groundhog day experience. I do not think I will be reading on. It took me forever, I stalled 20% in, finally got a bit caught up in some of the poetic paragraphs but powered through only because I admire y‘all and it‘s due back at the library tomorrow. I feel as trapped as the MC. Happy Red Wine 🍷 Day

#Oct2025 Book93 Note: my wedding anniversary is Nov 19. We will celebrate 37 years?!

ChaoticMissAdventures I really do not like groundhog day type storylines so thank you for taking the dive and assuring me I don't need to read this. And there are going to be 7 volumes of it??? 1mo

Loved this! I have Vol II on audio, and await the publication of Vol III next month.

I‘m reading Frankenstein at the same time and there are some intriguing parallels; Tara refers to herself as a monster and I‘m just at the part in Frankenstein where the monster is living in an annex and watching the family next door…. Sound familiar?! 🤔

What a rollercoaster, albeit a quiet and reflective one with all the ups and downs completely internalized, as Tara lives her own version of Groundhog Day but not because she was a jerk like Bill Murray just because? Will she unravel it? I have the second and I‘m almost afraid to read it #Schrödingerscat

Ummmmm maybe I‘m over protective or American culture is different, but I would not let my 5-6 year old son go with a woman I just met that day to a toy shop while I worked on a laptop in a cafe. 😐

On the other hand, my husband let some Ethiopian women unknown to him take our 3 month old baby into a bathroom in the Addis Ababa airport to change his diaper. First time dad - overwhelmed. 🤭

Tamra A woman also not seated on the airplane near my husband held our son nearly the whole flight to D.C. for him. Granted, where would she abscond to? 😜 Husband had no such luck with 18 mo old daughter 2 years later who apparently screamed most of the two flights home. Nobody wanted that, even the lovely maternal Ethiopian women. 😳 (edited) 4mo

After reading Vol I, I immediately got ahold of Vol II. I couldn‘t put these down and can‘t wait to read the next one. I‘m mesmerized by the way the books use the premise of being stuck in time to examine the things that matter to us, our relationships to other people, places, and points in time. What can I say about this book that those before me have not said? Tara wakes up one morning to find herself repeating the previous day. However for everyone around her, it is their first time experiencing November 18. While this could be an amusing Groundhog-Day style story, instead Balle takes this in a much more interesting direction. It becomes a meditation on time and experience, connections, love and everything in between. Con‘t ⬇️

Gleefulreader Con‘t from above. It dares to ask the question of what it means to live in an unchanging world where you continue to age and experience where everyone around you stops in time - and how that shatters your sense of self. The first in a seven part series, I cannot wait to see where this goes. 6mo
sarahbarnes I‘m just starting this one and I already want to read them all. 6mo

The narrator is still living in her alternate reality of a daily returning November 18. How to spend the time when you‘re caught in that one day again and again?
It‘s a concept that I found fascinating and the author writes so well. The ending felt a bit hurried but makes me eager to read the third part!

Deathly boring and mundane as this might have been, it has BOTHERED me. And that's something.

It's basically Groundhog Day if absolutely nothing of any import or interest happened, but the very NORMALITY of it all is what makes it so terrifyingly chilling.

This was not a pleasant reading experience, and yet, there is a talent to making a reader feel they are going slowly insane, so I can absolutely see this book's worth as an experiment.

RaeLovesToRead @Hooked_on_books If you want my full review, it's on Goodreads 😊 and I will probably post a video review in the next week too! 7mo

Guys, I'm so bored.

Like... so bored.

This is literally Groundhog Day if NOTHING HAPPENED.

Hooked_on_books Oh no! I was completely absorbed and fascinated by this one. But not every book is for every person! 7mo
RaeLovesToRead @Hooked_on_books Did it fill you full of existential dread and make you want to rip your skin off in frustration? Is that a feature??? Or is it just me??? 7mo
BarbaraBB I enjoyed it too and am even reading the second book now! 7mo
See All 14 Comments
RaeLovesToRead @BarbaraBB I hate it and I feel like I'm being driven to insanity with the mundanity of it all.... BUT if that's the point then that's quite clever. Is this the point???? 7mo
BarbaraBB I am not even sure there is a point at all 😉 7mo
Ruthiella Oh no! 😬 7mo
RaeLovesToRead @BarbaraBB It's annoying me less than House of Leaves. But only a little bit less! 7mo
RaeLovesToRead @Ruthiella Send help! 😅 7mo
Hooked_on_books It‘s just you. 😉 For me it emphasized both the mundanity of life and the importance of connection, which the narrator really learns when she loses any meaningful way to connect. And I feel that sinks in slowly for her in a way I found so compelling. 7mo
RaeLovesToRead @Hooked_on_books I think that's kind of what I mean, but it's having a super claustrophobic impact on me... I almost wonder if it's a metaphor for depression or similar. 7mo
RaeLovesToRead @Hooked_on_books She's moved out now and I feel so relieved. Just the thought of living a parallel life listening to your partners million noises each day and doing NOTHING made me want to scream!!!!!!! 7mo
Hooked_on_books I think it could definitely be read as a metaphor for depression. Or would strongly impact someone who feels trapped in some aspect of their life. I think it‘s awesome how a book can affect us so strongly, whether we feel like we “like” it or not. And you might end up finding book 2 more interesting based on what you‘ve said. 7mo
RaeLovesToRead @Hooked_on_books The existential dread is through the ROOF!!!!! 7mo
BarbaraBB @RaeLovesToRead I loved House of Leaves too. Both more for the concept than the story. But I get that you are relieved since she moved out of the house. 7mo

Tara lives November 18th over and over and over. I realize this is meant to be a seven-book series. The movement in book one is almost entirely internal - not bad, but not what I was expecting.

Ran out to get book 2 as soon as I finished book 1. Tara continues to be stuck on November 18th, but in this volume she begins to plan out her life, how she will continue to live day after day. Book 3 coming out in the fall, and yikes! there will be 7 books in this series. These books are very different from anything else I‘ve read, and that makes them valuable to me.

Deblovestoread I have book 2 from the library. Glad to hear you are enjoying it. 7mo

Couldn‘t put this short novel down. The Danish author writes of a woman who is stuck on one day in time, every day for her is that same day. I of course thought it would be like Groundhog Day, but it‘s not at all as it‘s mostly about her feelings and thoughts and emotions. What to do about her husband and her future consumes her every waking moment. It‘s a thriller in an odd sort of way. Excited to read book 2!

The International Booker Prize Shortlist has been announced today

I loved On the Calculation of Volume so very happy to see that on the list.

I‘ve read Perfection, liked but didn‘t love as everyone else

Just bought A Leopard-Skin Hat so hope I like that

I‘ve seen some great reviews for Small Boat so might want to give that a chance too

What do you think of the shortlist?

ChaoticMissAdventures I am going to read Big Bird this week, I feel generally overwhelmed by the prize lists so waiting to hear what others say, I know Leopard Hat has some mixed reviews but it is the other one I am most interested in. Sad Reservoir Bitches did not make it, I thought it was wonderful (but lots of trigger warnings) 7mo
AnneCecilie @ChaoticMissAdventures I‘m sad about that too, I loved Reservoir Bitches. Leopard Hat seems to be about grieving a sister so thought I should give it a try. I also have There‘s a Monster Behind the Door waiting for me even if it didn‘t make the shortlist 7mo

This was good and frightening. A woman gets caught up in the 18th of November. Every morning she wakes up to the same day. She thinks of ways to escape and get on with her life. It is a quiet book, and somehow it felt believable. I do want to read part II!

Tara Selter is stuck in November 18. That is every day when she wakes up its 11/18 (or 18/11 🇬🇧) , and everything repeats itself - the rainy weather near Lille, France, the sky, and people who wake fresh to their first 11/18, with no memory of the previous 11/18s.

It‘s a very curious book, with terrific atmosphere and yet many unanswered questions. It‘s the kind of book that makes me want to try writing.

Graywacke @sarahbarnes 👍 I hope you get it soon. Also thanks 8mo
Graywacke @BarbaraBB well, it leaves a lot to answer for. 🙂 I‘m wondering how it might evolve. Book 2 is available in English and I have a library copy. 8mo
AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB As you read on it makes perfect sense. I‘m sitting here waiting for the 6th volume to be released. I think it‘s supposed to be 7 volumes 8mo
Graywacke @AnneCecilie ooh! You‘ve read them in Danish? I think seven are planned. Five released in original language. 8mo
AnneCecilie @Graywacke No, translated into Norwegian, but the Scandinavian countries usually translate each other‘s bestsellers pretty fast 8mo
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie I hope I‘ll enjoy it I‘d love a good Danish series to look forward to! (edited) 8mo

This is the only book, so far, off the Booker International Longlist at my library. It was lyrical and propulsive although I‘m not sure I totally understand what was really going on. Even with the ambiguous ending I enjoyed it and am looking forward to Volume 2.

BarbaraBB Good to know. I have this one on my shelves to pick up soon. 8mo

The is is the 5th book in the series, and I‘ m not sure what to write so I don‘t spoil anything for others. But if you‘ve made it this far, you‘re going to love this as well.

This is supposed to be 7 books and I can‘t wait to see where Balle ends up.

Following Volume I, where Tara found herself stuck reliving November 18 over and over, she now enters her second year of reliving the day. Most of this is riveting, though she does go off on a tangent at one point I found less interesting. The ending makes me crazy to read the next volume, which isn‘t out in English yet! Arg!

AnneCecilie I‘m hooked on this series and has volume 5 out from the library now. 10mo
Hooked_on_books @AnneCecilie I‘m hooked, too! I‘m desperate for volume 3, but the English doesn‘t come out until November! I may have to learn another language to finish the series. 😂 10mo

In this trippy little book, Tara has traveled to a Paris on a book-buying trip for her rare books business with her husband. But when she wakes up one morning, she discovers she‘s reliving November 18, which was the day before. No one else remembers they‘ve already done this. Watching her navigate the time loop is fascinating. I really hope the whole series gets translated.

NBA longlist, translated literature

mom2bugnbee November 18 is my wedding anniversary, so I think that means I'm required to read this! 😂 11mo

This is the 4th book in the series and Tara has been stuck in 18th November for years. She isn‘t the only one. Several people who is experiencing the same is living in a house in Bremen. They begin to discuss what has happened, what to call it, what is the real time - the ones doing the same thing every day or this group. And if they can find answers to these questions and understand what has happened will it be possible to start time again?

This is the 3rd book in the series

Tara is still stuck in 18th November, but now she‘s not the only one. She has met a man who is also stuck. They share experiences and discover that they are not the only ones. How many people might be stuck with them?

I‘m already waiting on the 4th book from the library. I can‘t wait to find out where Balle is taking this story

A year has passed and Tara is stuck in November 18 and the only one who knows it. She decides to celebrate “Christmas” at her parents. Then she starts to travel and expanding her circle until she decides to experience all the seasons on the one day and travel to where that is possible. Until she ends up in Düsseldorf, where something might change.
