Peculiar Treasures | Robin Jones Gunn

Pickpick

Peculiar Treasures was my very first RJG title 16 years ago. I instantly felt like these fictional characters were friends and we were figuring out life together. How mad and simultaneously excited was I to learn that despite this being book #1 that there were 27 books before this in various series and many that have been written since that only intensifies my feelings of holding these forever friends deep in my heart...

MaggieCarr ...As much as I enjoyed this book my first time through, it was simply even better with all the back stories, as well as enjoying them together as rereads on book club. ❤️ 5d

This story of a Jewish/Muscogee girl had promise but didn‘t live up to it. Mia struggles with her father‘s side of her ancestry, as her very religious mother and stepfather immerse her in Jewish culture. I felt like Mia‘s mom was so removed from Mia‘s life that it seemed unbelievable. Both parents seem kind of deadbeat, despite the mom‘s constant presence (can one be simultaneously helicopter and deadbeat?). Disappointing overall.

Oh my gosh, this was adorable. At first, I wasn't sure if I liked it written in free verse, but once I got used to it, I was invested in the story. I liked that it was based on real otters.

Karisimo Loved this too 🥰 3w

The Mystery of the Laughing Shadow | Alfred Hitchcock, William Arden

(1969) Twelfth in the "Three Investigators" series of juvenile mysteries. This one has the boys stumbling across a sinister plot to steal the lost treasure of a fictional Native American tribe. The mystery is mostly transparent, and several things haven't aged well -- most noticably the depiction of Native Americans. It's still the Three Investigators but not one of the better ones.

Looking for Bobowicz: A Hoboken Chicken Story | Daniel Pinkwater, Jill Pinkwater

Nick's parents have sold their house in the suburbs and moved into the heart of Hoboken so he can experience urban culture. Luckily, Nick makes friends with two kids who live in the apartment next door. They spend the summer looking for the Phantom, who sometimes leaves odd gifts for people, and trying to find out more about a giant chicken who rampaged through the city years ago. Super fun sequel to The Hoboken Chicken Emergency.

LeslieO I used to read Summer Reading is Killing Me by Jon Scieszka to my 4th graders, which starts with the Hoboken Chicken, so I would recommend the original to them, but I never knew it was a series! 1mo

Twelve-year-old Elizabeth is sent to spend the summer with her distracted, scholarly aunt at a Scottish manor house and finds herself mysteriously able to interact with the 18th-century family who once lived there.

“Time-slip” stories were a huge childhood favourite of mine and this 1975 novel is such a good addition to the genre.

I'm fortunate that I can listen to audiobooks while I work. It makes the day so much more enjoyable. Comfort is the second in a series, and my only five star this week. The Tale of Despereaux is a three star read All the rest are four stars.
