Seabiscuit: An American Legend | Laura Hillenbrand
post image

This month is #NonfictionNovember!! All this month, we'll be recommending some our favorite nonfiction picks. First up, the unbreakable Laura Hillenbrand's debut SEABISCUIT. Though you may know her better for UNBROKEN, Hillenbrand's first book looks at an unlikely racing champion, Seabiscuit, and his down-on-his luck jockey. Simple and elegant, Hillenbrand's prose flows seamlessly across the page, making near-perfect storytelling look easy. 🏇😍📚

TheNextBook I loved this book! I am a huge fan of Hillenbrand and this was part of my #readingthrough30 #birthdaychallenge. Great read. I knew nothing about horse racing and devoured this! 7y
v_cuev Such an amazing read. What those jockeys put themselves through was really eye-opening! 7y
toofondbeth One of my favourite books of all time. 7y

The next book on my list is... The last book of the birthday challenge!!! This is my 2015. I'm going to crown a book I've already read this year as my 2016. But with this I have read a book from 1985 ( I threw in a book because it won the Pulitzer the year I was born)- 2016! Yeah! And it's Larson and I think he is incredible! #readingthrough30 #birthdaychallenge #2016readingtheme

tpixie Congrats 🎈🎊🍾🎉! 8y
Notafraidofwords Wow congratulations. That's a major undertaking. 8y
BookishFeminist Yes, go you!! 8y

Marchpane Congrats on completing your challenge! Was there a stand out book? 8y
TheNextBook @tpixie @Notafraidofwords @BookishFeminist Thanks guys! Expect a happy dance post when I finish! 8y
TheNextBook @Marchpane this was the biggest shocker to me because I didn't expect to fall in love with a book about building cathedrals 8y
TheNextBook @Marchpane I'm also not into Westerns and yet really enjoyed this one. This was actually published in 1985, the year before I was born, but won the Pulitzer in 1986 so I added it. It was extremely well done and enjoyable. 8y
TheNextBook @Marchpane and this one is part of my inspiration for next years theme! I noticed I am severely lacking in the short stories department. So after reading this and collecting more of Stephen King's short story collection I've been inspired. 8y
tpixie Wow! Great diverse choices! How did you pick them? And #Pillars is a huge 📚, for not being certain you'd like it! 8y
Marchpane Fantastic! Lonesome Dove has been on my list forever but it's such a doorstop! Will be moving it up to the top. 😀 8y
TheNextBook @tpixie I started looking at bestsellers list for each year. Then I would look at some of the prize list. When all else failed I looked at Goodreads to get ideas. It took a bit of research but I was determined. Eye on the prize! @Marchpane it is a doorstop but well worth it. Amazing character development and great world building with plausible and at times heartbreaking plot. 8y
TheNextBook @tpixie I really wanted to make this a really diverse reading year. I tried choosing authors that I hadn't read before. 8y
v_cuev @TheNextBook I read Lonesome Dove two years ago and I still recommend it all the time. I didn't expect to love it, but I couldn't put it down! 8y
tpixie @TheNextBook great accomplishment! 8y
TheNextBook @tpixie it was fun! Thank you! 😂😂😂 I'm actually really glad I made it. 8y
Reviewsbylola This was amazing. I read it in two days, just couldn't put it down. 8y

Misery | Stephen King

Stephen King making today's #favoritevillain #septemberphotochallenge super easy! A psychotic super fan, the ultimate bad guy in a fight of good vs evil and a clown. 😳 IT isn't even one of my favorite King's but his image is horrifying. We all float down here...

BookishFeminist Lord someone posted a picture of that damn clown from IT this morning and I nearly lost it. 😂 I haven't read IT yet but plan to fix that this fall since it's my first #readingthrough30 pick! 8y
amywithbooks And of course The Man in Black from the Dark Tower! 😉 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist IT isnt my favorite but it's a must read! I almost put The Gunslinger @avgeyer but left it at the Stand since Man In Black/Randall Flagg. I love that King let's such a great villian "live" in so many books! 8y

BookishFeminist I've picked this up and set this down so many times- it's so so so good but also dense. It's on my #readingthrough30 list too so I can finally finish the darn thing! 8y
TheNextBook @Notafraidofwords @TheLondonBookworm I've heard good things as well and I think the story should be really interesting. @timjulian I've just begun and I'm going to have to adjust the changes in dialect. Fingers crossed 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist this book is also pretty big! I plan on really digging in this afternoon. Hopefully I can get into a rhythm. 8y
mauveandrosysky This one is definitely challenging, but I found it immensely rewarding. 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook I hope so too! If you struggle with the Patois I heard the audiobook is really good. :) 8y
ValerieAndBooks I'm super excited to start my own #birthdaychallenge thanks to your inspiration 😊. I'll announce it in a couple weeks when I'm celebrating 🎂. So how long did it take you? I'm thinking a year won't be enough for me' 8y
TheNextBook @ValerieAndBooks yeah!!!! I started this year and I should be done next month. My plan was take my time and not force it. I've still been able to make time for my birthday challenge and other books on my tbr! Have fun. I think it's cool just knowing I have read a book from every year I've been alive. 8y

Today's been awful- these can stop any time. 😐 The best therapy is eating enough Chinese food to feed a family of 5 & reading in bed. (We ordered so much they sent us 4 fortune cookies! 😭)

I'm starting a project @TheNextBook came up with- she just turned 30 & decided to read a book for every year of her life. I turn 30 in a month so I'm doing it too! I'm an October baby so it'll be lots of horror. 🤓 Starting with It from 1986!

💀🔪👹 #30for30

brendanmleonard That's a great idea/challenge! 8y
brendanmleonard And sorry your days are so awful. Hoping they get better. 8y
BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard Isn't it?! Stacie's a genius at planning her reading life. 🙌🏼 8y

BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard Thanks ❤️ Bad mental health bumps lately with my PTSD. 😒 It's getting annoying but it'll pass eventually. I appreciate the kind words though. 😊 8y
MrBook Awesome!!! (Not the bad day part.) Chinese food rocks, "It" is awesome, and the 30 challenge is genius. @BookBabe & I are Libras ?. 8y
Notafraidofwords I've had a rough week too. Hopefully your weekend is better ! 8y
brendanmleonard @BookishFeminist I totally get bad mental health days. August was a lot like that. 8y
InLibrisVeritas This week has been rough on me as well. I hope yours gets better soon 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist yes!!!! I love the hashtag! Spread the word! I cant take credit for this one. A friend of mine came up with it and I went full out! I love that your doing it. Maybe it will turn into a rite of passage! I have five more books left! 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist when we have our DC meet up we will make sure to have a drink, lunch and talk. Books help but so do friends 😉 8y
LauraBeth This is a great idea! Hope tomorrow is better 😀 8y
ValerieAndBooks I hope you feel better soon! So how does this work for you? Read a book published in 1986, then 1987, and so on? Or just 30 books in a certain time frame? "Herzog" is in my book haul from today only because I had seen somewhere it was the bestseller (or one of them) book in the year I was born (I'm old haha). 8y
SoniaC Sorry you've had some rough days. Hope things get better. Great food and reading choices. That's some quality self care 👌love the challenge 8y
BekahB Hope your weekend is better. I agree that there's something comforting about eating Chinese food. Looks delicious! 8y
Zelma I'm so sorry about your terrible day. I did the Chinese food thing last night and it glorious. Started on my dumplings in the car and proceeded to get dumpling juice all over my shirt. I was a mess. I hope it helps! 8y
JPeterson I hope things get better soon! Great minds think alike - we had chinese takeout here tonight as well! 8y
shawnmooney Chinese food therapy? Sounds great! If sushi floats your boat I can mail you some from Tokyo! Like @valerieandbooks I am very curious to hear more about the reading project. ❤️❤️ 8y
Zelma Off topic, could you give me your email again? I forgot to write it down and now can't find the post. 8y
MrsV Hope you feel better soon! I'm sorry for all your troubles. Not sure if I want to admit how many books I would have to read for my age. 8y
TheNextBook @ValerieAndBooks read a book from every year you've been alive. So I've read books from 1986-2009 so far along with 2011 and 2012. I still have 2010 and 2013-2016. I also threw in Lonesome Dove from 1985 because it won the Pullitzer in 1986. I chose to read only books I've never read before. I didn't get to read them in order because I used the library for quite a few so it was based on availability. It's been fun! 8y
Vinjii I like it. I might try that as well. Also Stephen King's IT is one of my favourites. 8y
TheNextBook @shawnmooney see the above post! I tagged Valerieandbooks 8y
pppooraikul Hope your day gets better. And I'm sorry with your PTSD. It's horrible. But surely Chinese food and Stephen King can help! 😄 8y
PenguinInFlight That's one of my favorite King books...it is a horror story, but it's also an amazing coming of age story. I love the idea of a book for every year of your life! I turned 33 in July...so I should get cracking! Also, Chinese food + books always makes the day a little better. ☺️ That's pretty much my go-to plan after a bad panic attack (or series thereof). Sending a hug your way! ❤️ 8y
DragonSadhana Love the Chinese food therapy - it works! And what an awesome book project idea! Mine would have to be #35for35! 😝 8y
Chessa Sorry about the tough days! But it looks like you're on the right track with Chinese food, a good book, and a cold Coke! Now I want Coke again, dang it. 😂 8y
Jamesmelvinmitchell My favorite Stephen King novel. 8y
Bookzombie I'm so sorry you are having tough days. I may have to try this. My birthday isn't until March but maybe I will do #38for38! (I can't believe I'm going to be 38. 😳It's a while away though.) 8y
TheNextBook @bookzombie I love it. #readingthrough30 had been so much fun! I'm so glad people want to try it in varying ways! @bookishfeminist you can see the books I have listed on one of my goodreads shelves. 8y
RebeccasReading I'm also an October baby turning 30 soon and It is amazing- first Stephen King novel I read. Sorry you're having a tough time. 8y
[DELETED] 1409720085 That is such a good idea! 8y
Shortstack I hope your life hands you some good days soon!!! Also, I like your project. I'd have to do 34. Also, I have loved my 30s SO MUCH MORE than my 20s. 8y
LeahBergen Blah to crappy mental health days. I hear ya. Feel better soon, my #LitsyAfterDark love! 😉 I'm an October baby, too. 8y

EnidBiteEm 😢 But ... what were your fortunes? I hope they promised wonderful and fabulous things ... 8y
ValerieAndBooks @BookishFeminist @TheNextBook I love this idea so much -- and I see others do too -- maybe you can come up with a common hashtag we can share, because of our varying ages? My bday is next month so it's a perfect time for me to start! @shawnmooney 8y
asiriusreader @BookishFeminist love that #30for30 challenge idea!!! I just turned 30 in June---maybe I can get caught up! 😄 8y
TheNextBook @ValerieAndBooks @BookishFeminist what do you think of #readingthrough#years. Only because you always end up reading one more because you include your birth year. So I'm #readingthrough30years. Honestly I dont care. I just love that people love the idea! 8y
moranadatter Sorry your day wasn't good. That meal looks amazing though. And Coke! I'm not an addict... 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook 😊 Thank you, you're absolutely right- food, drink, books, and bookish friends are the best therapy. ❤️ This sounds like an amazing plan! This definitely sounds like the perfect rite of passage project- so excited so many people are interested. Look what you started! 8y
BookishFeminist @Zelma LOL I know I've done that with dumplings before. ❤️ Chinese food definitely helped last night. My email is s.flourance @ gmail 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney I love sushi! You don't need to mail it- I can get plenty of good sushi in DC (but I'm sure nothing compares to what you get in Japan!) 8y
BookishFeminist @MrsV No shame at all! More years = more books! 📚📚📚😊 8y
BookishFeminist @Vinjii I'm really enjoying It so far! I've had a thing against clowns for a while (not just the average trigger a lot of folks have) so this is going off the deep end for me, but I'm excited! 😊📚👀 8y
BookishFeminist @PenguinInFlight I'm sorry to hear you get panic attacks too! Mine were incessant and severe yesterday, hence the awful day. Good food + book + calming music is always my go-to as well after some panic. I hope they aren't a huge issue for you ❤️ 8y
BookishFeminist @DragonSadhana yes! More years more books! 📚 my partner's doing his as well and will be 34 for 34 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @Chessa Thanks! ❤️ it helped a lot last night. I hope you have Coke in your future. I'm a complete addict it's awful 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Jamesmelvinmitchell It's one of the only King novels I haven't read- I'm glad to hear you enjoy it so much! You always have great taste in books. 8y
BookishFeminist @Bookzombie LOL. You should definitely do 38 for 38! More years, more books! 📚😊 8y
BookishFeminist @Writergal @leahbergen Cheers, October babies! 🍻 8y
BookishFeminist @emilydecato It's going to be such a fun challenge! 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack Hey, more years more books! 📚📚 @becausetrains is going to do it too and he'll be 34 for 34 as well. 😊 I'm really looking forward to my 30s actually- my 20s have been AWFUL and I'm so excited to get a fresh start!! 8y
BookishFeminist @alohabetty Yes it's so long! But I'm loving it so far. 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @TheBookAddict 😂😂 the fortunes weren't terrible at least! 8y
BookishFeminist @Rebeccak Please do! It's such a fun challenge- I love the list I have picked out. 😊 8y
Jamesmelvinmitchell @BookishFeminist thank you my friend I alway love your reading list and reviews. 8y
BookishFeminist @Pete Thanks for the awesome list! There's some great titles on there. 8y
BookishFeminist @bookishkris More years more books! 📚📚 such a fun challenge 8y
BookishFeminist @HotMessJess Yes! I'm loving it so far 😍😍 8y
shawnmooney 💛💛💛💛💛 8y
BookishFeminist @KVanRead hey no shame! More years more books 📚😍 I've been ogling my partner's list since he's got more years on me! 8y
BookishFeminist @EnidBiteEm I forget the exact fortunes but they weren't awful! Unless it's just awfully written 😂 today is looking up so thank you ❤️ 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook @ValerieAndBooks Yes I like that hashtag or maybe #BirthdayChallenge? That would be completely universal. What do you guys think? No pressure though- I'll finish when I finish as I always read new releases anyway! 8y
BookishFeminist @asiriusreader Yes that would be fantastic! No pressure though 😊 I'm going to finish when I finish since there's no danger of me not reading new releases every year lol 8y
BookishFeminist @kmdartist Ugh right? I'm such a Coke addict it's awful 😂 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist I'm happy to hear you're excited for your 30s! So many people dread them but I've found that my 30s are much close to what I thought my 20s would be. All of the optimism and enthusiasm without the drama, lack of money, and self consciousness. I hope you find the same! 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist @ValerieAndBooks Birthday challenge! I like that. Its so easy to do and you have a year to do it. These books will make up less than half of the books I read this year. 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack Girl anything has to be better than my 20s at this point so I'm sure they'll be good!! 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook Same! I'm already over 100 for this year and I wouldn't have it any other way. This challenge is going to make me pick up all those books I keep meaning to read but putting aside for new releases! I'm so excited! 8y
TheNextBook #Birthdaychallenge #Readingthrough30 📖📚⚡️🎈🎉🎁🎀🎁🎉🎈⚡️📚📖 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist Any specific rules? Or just a book from every year you've been alive. 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack Whatever you want it to be! I'm doing books from those years that I haven't read, as much as possible things I've wanted to read for a while or modern "classics" from those years. I made my list by looking at the nytimes bestsellers lists from that list as well as award winners, defaulting to POC authors and women whenever possible bc those lists are skewed. I'll prolly put up my TBR for it at some point! :) 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack But yes a book from every year you've been alive 😊 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist I'm looking forward to see yours! I have spent so much time reading older works/classics that I've not paid as much attention to the newer ones. 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack I feel you there- when I was studying French lit in college it was the same. It was fascinating (sometimes) but also just stale after a while. I hadn't even heard of so many of the modern classics until I got back into reading in the last few years! 8y
becausetrains @Shortstack yup, what she said :) I'm starting with The Name of the Rose, but there are a number of good candidates for books that came out in '83. #readingthrough34 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist How horrifying is it that I see the issue 1 book of Sweet Valley High came out in 83 and after reading about the nostalgia of it in Bad Feminist I now want to read it?! 😂😂 8y
Shortstack @becausetrains I'm 82, debating "A" is for Alibi (since I've never read Sue Grafton) or Haruki Murakami's A Wild Sheep Chase 8y
Shortstack @becausetrains also crazy interested in The Name of the Rose!! May steal it for my pick! I'm also looking at On a Pale Horse because one of my friends is obsessed with it. 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack I think when I'm done with this challenge I'm going to start going backwards. 😂 sweet valley high! I've never actually read those but Bad Feminist makes me want to as well. A Wild Sheep Chase is good but not Murakami's best IMO. Sue Grafton's also alright but not my favorite mysteries. It's a hard choice though because those are both iconic! 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack For my first year 1986 it's a hard choice- I started It but was also torn between that and Prince of Tides! 8y
becausetrains @Shortstack we just found this book from '83 as well - never heard of it before, but it's supposed to be 92 on some org's (Library of Congress?) most significant 20th century books in the English language - 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist I read Sweet Valley, Babysitters Club, everything by R.L. Stein and countless other series in full when I was kid. 😂😂😂 8y
Shortstack @becausetrains Gah!! This is going to be so hard!! 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack I read all of Goosebumps and also Animorphs lol 8y
becausetrains @Shortstack right? #DamnItLitsy (Also damn you for finding that Gladiator meme that I now have as my profile pic 😂) 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist I've never read any of the Animorphs. Did you read the Fear Street books? Also, I may go through the years multiple times, too. I've got at least 2-3 books set aside for each year I've touched 😂😂😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack Sigh, you and me both- when I started looking around I was like damnit! I'm gonna be doing this challenge a few times I see. And of course I read the Fear Street books!! 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist You're going in order? I might just start with the books I own. 😬 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack I am but only because I'm pedantic 😂 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist I am impulsive with my reading. 😬 8y
Posemn I love the GH list of books @Pete, thank you. I will, however, not be joining the #30for30 challenge. There is not enough time in my lifetime to read THAT many books. You people are you.....ou.....ng!!!! 8y
Posemn Oops. I wanted to also tell you that I love hanging with all of you on @litsy though! 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist @shortstack @becausetrains I looked at bestsellers, award winners, books I had on my TBR list already. My biggest thing was to read books that I hadn't read before. https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/26586107-stacie-c?shelf=reading-through-30 this is my list. Let me know if it works. 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook I did the same thing to gather my list- bonus points if the book has been on my TBR for a while but haven't picked it up yet. All of the double checking of award winners was tedious to make sure the book I wanted to read was published the year it won! 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook the link works! We wound up with many of the same books on our lists 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist I'm excited to see your list!! And thanks for sharing yours @TheNextBook - I have a feeling I will default to books I own whenever possible though. 😬😂 I also have had a hard time with having read more than I expected from most of these years! 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist I had some pretty good ones. I rated all of the ones that I read. Once I've posted all the reviews I'll link to my blog page for you guys! @Shortstack having books in the house instead of having to get them from the library was a plus. The ones I have left I own. Hoping to finish this month. 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook I'll have to stalk your goodreads and see how you rates things! @shortstack I'm also going off of what I own too so I can minimize library trips and stuff, but I'm not beholden to that if it's something I've been trying to read for a while. 8y

Lonesome Dove: A Novel | Larry McMurtry
post image

Technically this is a TV miniseries but I'm going with it anyway. I watched this when I was a child and fell in love with Augustus McCrae, played by Robert Duvall. As an adult, I read the book and I still loved Gus. ☺️ The characters in Lonesome Dove are compelling and the journey they are set on is sweeping. Lonesome Dove is one of my all-time-favorite books. TheNextBook I've been looking for this to watch! I read this book as an addition to my #readingthrough30 It was amazing! Where is the series available?! 8y
Bookzombie @TheNextBook I'm so glad you enjoyed the book too! I searched online. It looks like you can buy this on Amazon in several ways, but it's not streaming on anything else that I can see. 😕 I'm not sure where you are located , but maybe try the library for a DVD copy. I hope you find it. 8y

Columbine | Dave Cullen

Pickpick

This book was extremely disturbing, but incredibly informative. Through research and interviews with survivors Cullen, a reporter at the scene during the events, weaves together what happened before, during and after the events. He disects the history of Eric and Dylan, dispels the myths to reveal the truth about what happens and exposes the media and the cops for how the event and the investigation were handled. Very emotional but worthwhile read

LauraBeth Great review! 8y

Josie Have you read She Said Yes? It's about one of the victims! I read it years and years ago but I remember it being very powerful. 8y
TheNextBook @Josie I heard of it and part of me wants too. But what happened was a myth. She was never asked anything so she was never given the chance to say anything... Cullen spent some time describing what really happened. 8y
Josie @TheNextBook I need to pick this one up, then! It's been so many years since I've read anything about Columbine! 8y
