Francis Phelan, ex-big-leaguer, part-time gravedigger, full-time bum with the gift of gab, is back in town. He left Albany twenty-two years earlier after he dropped his infant son accidentally, and the boy died. Now he's on the way back to the wife and home he abandoned, haunted at every corner by the ghosts of his violent life. Francis; his wino ladyfriend of nine years, Helen; and his stumblebum pal, Rudy, shuffle their ragtag way through the city's bleakest streets, surviving on gumption, muscatel, and black wit. Destiny is not their business.

Pickpick

A soft pick as I've grown weary of this testosterone-soaked writing style. This is a bleak novel in which punishments are self-inflicted and permanent, in which a little self-reflection and humility would derail the entire plot. It is also a beautifully written novel and an honest portrayal of how people sabotage themselves. And it's my #bookspin for December.

Update on Camille's evolution into a lap cat. Her warm, furry weight is helping me get through a not-very-exciting part of the tagged book.

With Silo's help, I finally found time to read some of this strange and so far depressing book.

A slim volume packed with ideas about guilt, fate, death, and who‘s in control of our life. There is so much humor, especially when the dead are speaking, that you don‘t think you‘re reading about such weighty subjects. But it will get you thinking. #MountTBR

“Jack opened the door and looked out with the expression of an ominous crustacean.” 😂

saresmoore Ha! That seems like it would be an absurd description, but I could totally picture it, even without this perfect photo! 😂 6y

“I believe in somethin‘,” Rudy said. “I‘m a Catholic.” “Well so am I. What the hell has that got to do with it?” 😂😂 I‘m loving the humor in this book!

1. One of my faves from middle school. 🍻
2. Coffee (only recently rediscovered). ☕
3. Earth Wind & Fire makes me want to rollerskate and the Circle Jerks make me want to kick people in the pit. Dance? Uh, Sparks? Ink Spots, maybe.
4. Trolley, jk. My FIL said buggy but we say cart.

SpeculativeFemale I just rediscovered coffee in the last few months as well; now I'm a daily coffee drinker ☕ 6y

His lesson to Francis was this: that life is full of caprice and missed connections, that thievery is wrong, especially if you get caught, that even Italians cannot outrun bullets, that a proffered hand in a moment of need is a #beautiful thing.

Don't remember much of this read, but I like the picture accompanying it, taken in Copenhague.
