Napoleon
Napoleon: A Life | Andrew Roberts
The definitive biography of the great soldier-statesman by the New York Times bestselling author of The Storm of Warwinner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Biography and the Grand Prix of the Fondation Napoleon Austerlitz, Borodino, Waterloo: his battles are among the greatest in history, but Napoleon Bonaparte was far more than a military genius and astute leader of men. Like George Washington and his own hero Julius Caesar, he was one of the greatest soldier-statesmen of all times. Andrew Robertss Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleons thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine. Like Churchill, he understood the strategic importance of telling his own story, and his memoirs, dictated from exile on St. Helena, became the single bestselling book of the nineteenth century. An award-winning historian, Roberts traveled to fifty-three of Napoleons sixty battle sites, discovered crucial new documents in archives, and even made the long trip by boat to St. Helena. He is as acute in his understanding of politics as he is of military history. Here at last is a biography worthy of its subject: magisterial, insightful, beautifully written, by one of our foremost historians. From the Hardcover edition.

Whilst this is a genuine #chunkster of a read...it's also very detailed read. It almost reads as a work of fiction...although there are brief moments of dry information (as a lover of historical nonfiction this didn't bother me in the slightest) but some readers may find it a little tedious. #bookspin @hearomaofbooks

Kristy_K Great review! I‘m hoping to get to this one later this year. The page count is definitely a little daunting. 1mo

A long and thorough account of Napoleon‘s life. No idea why I decided to listen to this. There were a lot of battles and a large number of men and horses died. Roberts does not villainise Napoleon but it is difficult to view him as a hero, particularly after the disastrous Russian campaign. I do know significantly more about Napoleon, and to a lesser extent his contemporaries, than I did at the start of the 37+ hours.

Yesterday was the 253rd birthday of this man. Before going on to study History in college, I was already fascinated with the emperor's life and career, so it's no surprise that I immediately added this book to my wishlist the moment I learned of its existence. Thankfully, I was able to get the ebook last year. I still like seeing the physical copy in bookstores though. Will I be able to read this by August 15 next year? We'll see.

Well I am not an expert on the the Napoleonic period and what I have read concentrated on the English experience. As a result this book was a much needed picture of the life of Napoleon from his youth as a minor Corsican nobleman, to extraordinary general to self proclaimed emperor. Not just focussed on military campaigns but his revolutionary administrative and legal reforms which changed European society. A long but worthy read.

"More books have been written with Napoleon and the title than there have been days since his death in 1821"

DavidHoloman That's about 72,000 books. Can I get a citation for this assertion? 6y

There's no way I'll hit 24 hours - especially with the game later. But I'm betting I've already read more than I would in a typical weekend. Yay! #24in48 @24in48

I'm glad I checked Litsy before hitting the hay because I forgot about @24in48 (#ashamed)! I'm not sure I'll get 24 hours, but I'll get closer than I did last time!

I've been thinking about tyrants a bit the past few days. I have no idea why¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Anyhow, here's a quote from that benevolent dictator Napoleon Bonaparte to brighten your day.

He appealed to the pride of those he would conquer but gave them no doubt as to the consequences of resistance. ‘The French army loves and respects all peoples, especially the simple and virtuous inhabitants of the mountains,‘ read a proclamation to the Tyrolese that month. ‘But should you ignore your own interests and take up arms, we shall be terrible as the fire from heaven.

If you ever read one book about this colossally pivotal man, or even just want to understand Europe in the Napoleonic Era, I highly recommend that you make this one that read. A longtime student of history, and I was still blown away by the intricacies and complexities of the man, his contemporaries, and his time. This book can easily be read in small chunks as well if you feel intimidated by weight. Pair with: Domaine Abbatucci 2014, room temp.

Erinloves2read Oooh! My husband will love this. He would recommend a biography about Winston Churchill that he raved about. I'll have to ask who the author is..... 8y
MrBook Awesome! Thanks, @Erinloves2read ! @BookBabe is always looking for artist bios in particular if you know of any good ones. 8y

Sydsavvy Ok I read this because I thought I could handle it. I've read War and Peace countless times and loads of French and Russian books. But this was a ton of new info for me! Very very detailed. So I loved it and struggled, but I read it. 8y
MrBook @SaraFair You seem to have no wariness of the big stuff 😊👍🏻. 8y
MrBook @Sydsavvy 😁😁😁👍🏻 8y
iread2much How was the writing style and did the author use credible sources? 8y
MrBook @iread2much The writing style was similar to Ron Chernow. And the author spent a great deal of time gathering material from many sources, including traveling to all battlefields and important locales of Napoleon's life. The bibliography is extensive. 😊 8y
Gezemice Sounds great. I am just starting on Alexander Hamilton but I should add this to the list, too! 7y
