I have long said that Dan Jones's history books read like novels, so it is no surprise that his first novel is excellent. The invasion of France in 1346. Crecy. Other harrowing battles between the two. Told through the eyes of a group of soldiers who call themselves the Dogs of Essex. I loved the characters, the history, the depictions of battle, just everything about the book.

If you enjoy Bernard Cornwell‘s battle scenes, then you‘re set up to enjoy this one. Blood and any other bodily fluids graphically described. Complaints about too much swearing in some reviews, needless to say I didn‘t notice. A bit confused about the drug use. What was available then?
I shall be reading the rest of the trilogy definitely.

MicheleinPhilly Pickles has some that she murders IMMEDIATELY and then others that are her “babies.” There is no rhyme or reason to which is which. 🙄 1y

squirrelbrain Henry‘s had two of those exact snakes - one when he was tiny that lasted a while as he only had puppy teeth; number two didn‘t last so long! 1y

Caroline2 Yes, I‘ve heard a lot about the drug use which has put me off. It doesn‘t sound very historical or relevant yet feels like it‘s to fulfil some Essex Boys stereotype. 🙄 1y
TrishB @Caroline2 it‘s only one person so in that sense it‘s not a gang doing it. (And the rest don‘t like it) I just didn‘t really get what it added or actually what it was- as it‘s a trilogy I suppose it may be explained eventually. 1y
